@georgetakei the best thing is that at the moment you can really engage with fellow tooters, if indeed that is a term (if not it should be). I have far fewer followers, not that I as Johnny Nobody ever had many, but I get a lot more boosts, favourites and replies without hatred and bile.

I rather think mastodon is less about the big names, and more about community.

On twitter, people look for interaction with big names, who can't/ don't reply back because of the massive number of followers they have.

Not like that here, I think. Just one person speaking to another, what social media should be.
