And, know when to pivot a lesson when mid-session your minds says "Fuck, this is boring." 😁
@aus_teach @edmunds_t @edutooters Yes! If I'm bored out of my fucking mind than I lost my students ages ago.
@aus_teach @edmunds_t @edutooters YES! There is no point in doing something that isn’t working. That’s why we need to be so reflective about what we do, so we can sort of harness all the alternatives when we realise it is not going to plan.

And we need to have fun - and be seen to be having fun - when we are teaching. Often, our enthusiasm for the subject matter is contagious.

@edmunds_t @jnyrose @aus_teach @edutooters Teaching is, after all, a performance art!

My header says "joyful learning". Youwould be surprised how often I get asked about that. When did we decide learning should not be fun .... but "efficient"

@aus_teach @jnyrose @edutooters

I don't know if I would be surprised. I often have to convince academics that "fun" is not the antithesis of "rigor."

@edmunds_t @aus_teach @edutooters I definitely find that enthusiasm for the content AND your students can allow you to smooth out almost any bump. It also (I think) makes you into the kind of teacher that doesn’t struggle so much to “hold” a class’ attention (whether you are talking or they are—your commitment to them and the topic models the excellence you want them to find in themselves.)
@edmunds_t @aus_teach @edutooters also, fun, and joy, they have “legs”, they can keep people learning well beyond the time you get to spend together. I am not necessarily fun in a gamesy sort of way (though we do lots of interactive and student/peer activities), but no one can doubt how much joy we can find working together and how much that keeps going after the students leave. That’s a way to get impact, if you are worrying about rigour.
@jnyrose
Our model of Ludic Pedagogy gets at that, too. Fun is not just about play, but the attitude of playfulness and positive affect.
@edmunds_t cannot wait to read about it!
@edmunds_t @aus_teach @jnyrose @edutooters Sometimes the more rigor, the more fun!
@AlliFlowers @edmunds_t @aus_teach @edutooters I often warn my students that our fun is also going to be hard work sometimes!
@jnyrose @AlliFlowers @edmunds_t @edutooters
There is a fair amount of academic discourse in literature that discusses how educators interpret "fun".
@aus_teach @AlliFlowers @edmunds_t @edutooters that, and also how we define “engagement” are always fun conversations to have.
@aus_teach @AlliFlowers @edmunds_t @edutooters genuinely didn’t notice my use of “fun” there. I stand by it. Those kinds of conversations ARE fun.
@jnyrose @AlliFlowers @edmunds_t @edutooters
They are fun conversations. I taught for 20yrs. Student would ask "Will this be a fun lesson Sir." I would respond with "Fun is what you bring with you." 😇😁
