"I watch the plant-based meat industry like I watch the Chicago Bears—with marvel, skepticism, and frequent disappointment."

A nice overview of the expansion of meat replacements that have come to market in the last several years.

I think it's definitely easier to be #vegan now with all these options... both for umami satisfaction and for hosting non-vegan guests.

Will plant-based meat ever satisfy America’s hunger for the real deal?

Meatless cuisines successfully feed much of the world. But in the U.S., meat is chargrilled into the national psyche.

Interesting article, good information.
For me the industrial made veg proteins are ok and I enjoy them occasionally. Bit they have health issues associated with them also. I use in moderation for health and there high cost.
I prefer to keep it basic and not as processed as they figured out long ago.
Also I am not sure why we desire veg products to taste like meat. I would prefer it to taste different, for what it is, different spices, different flavors. Expand your horizons.

@jcmacomber @ultranurd agree, many of them manage to look like meat products, but fail in taste and texture. One exception is Beyond Meat, that's pretty good.
In dishes like curries I prefer to replace meat with nuts or paneer/halloumi. When I miss meat in a dish, it's more the texture than the taste.
I do eat meat every now and then, but never from factory farming sources. If I can't be sure, I skip it altogether.

@edwinek @jcmacomber Yeah, Beyond is pretty solid. Impossible too. And for beef replacement it's close enough (especially at restaurants with mixed menus) I need to double check!

For chik'n I like Rebellyous or Gardein Ultimate... but homemade seitan goes a long way too.

@ultranurd @jcmacomber sadly it looks like the chickenoid brands you mention are not available in The Netherlands. Vegetarian Butcher's chicken nuggets are relatively good though, if you cook them right.
@jcmacomber @edwinek We run into that with almost every ad in VegNews. "Ooo! New cheez!" "Nope, Australia only." or similar.
@ultranurd @edwinek
I try to go with homemade as much as possible. Better for you and just plain cheaper. But it does cost you time to make stuff.
@edwinek @ultranurd
For Mr veg took awhile and few trys but have been veg for 10 years or so. I do not miss meat one bit.
As a whole just feel better for it.
