I wonder if #raspberrypi will ever be plentiful again
@shanselman Maybe the Picos
@martin @shanselman noted @Raspberry_Pi posted about new Kenya factory, one would hope that will help.
@shanselman I'm sure there's plenty of them in basements and boxes around the world?
@shanselman I could use one of those RPi4/8GB though. Wouldn't go into some box, it'd fit really good by the living room TV :)

@shanselman oh, did the raspberypi decline in popularity?

I am into linux thought I would be getting into them ,..

no?

@pythagorus @shanselman i think he means they are hard to find for purchase

@silverjam @shanselman

phew!

because i am looking forward to dirt cheap boxes i can run linux on

@pythagorus @silverjam can’t find them

@shanselman @silverjam

so: snap them up when available, new or used, i guess

@shanselman @silverjam @pythagorus they’ve had 0 stock for a while, and people are selling their pi’s for £80+. https://michaelbrooks.co.uk/the-raspberry-pi-doesnt-seem-to-be-recovering/
The Raspberry Pi doesn't seem to be recovering | Michael Brooks

Recently, there's been a huge demand in the Raspberry Pi 3, and 4, but not enough supply to meet that demand. Consequently, this means that the resell value

@michael @shanselman @silverjam

wow that seems like a lot but I am us dollar how much were they?

@pythagorus @silverjam @shanselman probably closer to $100 which sucks when they sell for $40 officially.
@pythagorus @michael @silverjam pitop is a custom repackaging with a fancy case and extra boards inside, so not a raw Pi
@shanselman @michael @silverjam
supply chain issues on top of this:
"The original model became more popular than anticipated,[18] selling outside its target market ..."
@michael @silverjam @shanselman someone gave a #chromebook which i have hardly even touched
afre they even remotely comparable? are either x86 or something different?
@pythagorus @michael @silverjam a Chromebook is a Google Arm Linux distro, so similar but not open unless you crack it open. Raspberry Pi’s are wide open

@shanselman @michael @silverjam

a bit off the topic but then I can overwrite the chromebook os and install linux or maybe that is a waste...tbh I don't even know what the UI looks like i would expect a windows copy

@pythagorus @shanselman @silverjam chromeos is already Linux based. There’s a way to use terminal and run Linux programs. I think you could also format it and run another Linux OS or possibly dual boot. https://youtu.be/wMvJgHl7084

@michael @shanselman @silverjam
seems like running a linux emu on top of anything but a hypervisor is a ram #vampire
...

@michael @shanselman @silverjam

something liike lubuntu or lxde fedora might run better than the OOB OS

but what I really want to do is jail break my phones and run them on linux

@shanselman According to a recent interview with Ebon Upton, they are expecting all RasPi supply chain issues to be resolved within 12 months.

@jennasys @shanselman it’d be a miracle. It’s been a year and a half.
@shanselman I managed to get a Pi 400 just before they ran out. I really hope everyone gets a chance with one of those. So neat!
@shanselman they claim it will be. But I’m not sure there is an accurate idea of the actual built up demand.

@shanselman eventually. I’m looking at the Khadas Edge 2 (which is a bit more expensive) and there are other RK3588-like boards out there that are suitable high end replacements.

I can’t find anything as small and useful as the Zero 2, though.

@shanselman I have a few rpi4’s that I run various things on such as octoprint and Pi-hole. But lately I’ve been thinking I should sell them so I can retire earlier.
@shanselman there’s a handy site I’ve used to find one: https://rpilocator.com

@shanselman I hope so! My ham radio hotspot needs an upgrade. Pi5 hopefully will do the trick when it's released.
@shanselman
Same with google coral usb devices
@shanselman Need to replace a dead Pi 4GB, pretty sure I'm going to be looking at alternative SBCs since I've been signed up to a stock notification for months from local retailers.
@shanselman funny story. As a MS partner, we used to do IoT labs with local MS offices. About to do one just before the pandemic hit. I have a drawer full of 50 #raspberrypi's owned my MS, Just a few years old, that's all.
@jagostoni give them to me?
@shanselman I don't own them but I know who in Microsoft does 😀
@shanselman not sure how serious you were on this but I just got permission to send you the Raspberry PIs 😀 Happy to DM with you some details. They are "Compliments of the Detroit, MI office - Randy Pagels"
@shanselman hi. I've seem others lament the shortage,but when I look on Amazon or *shudder* eBay, I see plenty of 4s and 3+. Am I missing something? I'm not familiar with Pis but I do have an Arduino Uno I've used for various projects. Controllers are on my long list of things I'm interested in learning more about or getting some hours logged working with.
