To everyone's surprise, Toot! v17.0 is out!

https://toot.to/

This is the first in a series of releases that implement support for new Mastodon features. More will come in the near future, but this version offers:

* Full support for all new types of notifications in Mastodon 4.0, including admin notifications.
* Updated to use more modern versions of various iOS functionality. As a result, however, the minimum supported iOS version is now 13.
* Bugfixes.

I know there is a lot more people want, like editing, but those are bigger features and I thought it better to push something out the door, so I will keep releasing 17.x versions for a while to push out more new features.

They will mainly focus on adding Mastodon v3.5 and v4.0 features that Toot! is missing, plus any little bits of polish that would make me happy.

(I know a lot of people want adjustable font sizes, but that is unfortunately a scarily complicated feature, just because it tends to break all the existing designs, so I am not planning on getting around to that just yet.)
And I generally have my hands more than full already, so I'll apologise ahead of time for not being very receptive to any feature requests for now.
@tootapp take your time! I just bought the app the other day. Love that you’re active again.
@tootapp thanks for all your hard work, I appreciate it. 🙂 👏 🙇‍♂️
@tootapp I kicked in a tenner via the “toot is too cheap” in-app purchase this morning before I read about this new version. I am pleased with the karmic benefit paying off so fast!
@tootapp please don’t apologize. Your work is a gift! Thank you!
@tootapp I‘m happy to see that my favorite iOS client is being enhanced - thanks for taking up development again and take your time!
@tootapp is there a preferred way to make said feature requests?
@tootapp As long as you keep it on your radar. It not really an aesthetic thing…more of “my eyes are old and tired”-thing. I’ll take functional over fancy any day, but I think “bigger” will be on a lot of people’s short list.
@ministerofimpediments Yeah, I know. It would definitely be good as an accessibility feature, it's just an annoying one to actually do.
@tootapp just updated! Thank you so much 😊
@tootapp if such a feature is not a priority, I think you should change your approach to building apps
@gstml @tootapp Go write your own app then. Show us how it is done the Gustomela-approved way 🤣
@[email protected] @tootapp if I could I would definitely have accessibility as a top priority. It’s a matter or respect towards people.
@tootapp Just have it use Dynamic Type so it scales with the iOS Display and Text Size setting.
@Skawt The problem is that that will break all the existing designs, and they need to all be gone through and checked and fixed.
@tootapp can i ask that you put support for Dyslexic fonts only your things to-add-someday feature list?
@isaiah Interesting thought! Should probably go along with text size fixes.
@tootapp thank you. i know it’s hard to add everything all at once and fonts are non-trivial changes. but it really does mean a world of difference to a few people. 🙂

@tootapp just for perspective, here is a screenshot from Twiteriffic and Toot! right now on my iPhone 12 Max.

twiteriffic doesn’t have a dyslexic font, but does support a number of choices and very large text. this isn’t even their biggest option.

@tootapp any chance the language picker is on your list of missing features you're working to include?
@bovil Probably.
@tootapp Thanks. I've had friends note that 4.0 includes the ability for admins to plug their servers into different translate engines, but I believe that only works with posts where the language picker identifies the language they're posting in.
@tootapp Thank you for the update and sorry that we all are little greedy on new features like Edit - Fontsize ..... wait patient so the unique UI stays intact which is unique. #Keepupthegoodwork

Oh, also, this release is set on a phased rollout so I can catch any serious issues before it rolls out to everyone, so it will become available gradually over the coming week.

There might be a way to force an update in the App Store if you don't want to wait but I'm not 100% sure?

@tootapp Any chance of support for fork-specific features? Like local-only posts on Hometown? :)
@JonSimantov Just supporting the main version is plenty of work at the moment.
@tootapp update came through on iOS here ok… didn’t notify but I went to app page and update button was there. No issues (yet) 😁
@tootapp The toot detail page on the App Store has an "Update" button that will get you the new version without the wait
@tootapp I just updated here. I went into the app store, tapped on my account, and selected "update" next to your app.

@tootapp

Update downloaded and running in the US Midwest

And it’s sweet!

@tootapp

2 nuisances I’ve seen so far:

1. If there’s a way to tap at the top to return all the way to the top of a timeline, I haven’t found it.

2. The bookmark feature is now much too difficult to get to. It should be right next to Favourite, right under a post, instead of buried under the “…”

@tootapp

Another: “Notifications” is not indicating that I’ve received new notifications.

@tootapp It's a shame we don't have such an app on Android.
@tootapp the app with the white background is iOS toot app correct? Sorry screen readers, I am attempting to describe the picture but IDK how to describe screenshots off the squares of apps. Just a lowly 27 year old who finds technology confusing, overwhelming, and just craves simplicity.
@swiftiebuckycas @tootapp No, tooot with three Os is a different app. The one we’re talking about here is Toot! with two Os and an exclamation mark, whose icon is this:
@badibulgator @tootapp I see that now. I first downloaded the purple mastodon app. I’m not used to having a decentralized social media platform where there is third party apps for a platform.

@odin @tootapp thank you… this whole process is overwhelming.
@swiftiebuckycas No problem! Nothing wrong with having questions
@swiftiebuckycas @tootapp No, that's tooot, You're looking for Toot! which is at https://apps.apple.com/us/app/toot/id1229021451

@thatKomputerKat @tootapp I see… that app will cost $3.99 to download.
@swiftiebuckycas @tootapp Yeah. I got it and pretty much every other iOS app available and I really like it far more than the other options.
@thatKomputerKat @tootapp metatext is free. Tooot is free too.
@swiftiebuckycas @tootapp that is true. I’ve tried both of them. I really much prefer Toot! Though. In the end it’s up to you.
@swiftiebuckycas @tootapp Nope. „Toot!“ is written like this and shows a mastodon as its icon. That‘s a different app.

@swiftiebuckycas @tootapp the "tooot" in your screenshot is not "toot" in this case.

Here's the app store link for Toot, with two Os: https://apps.apple.com/app/toot/id1229021451?ls=1

App Store
@hugo @tootapp sadly cost $3.99
@swiftiebuckycas @tootapp if you have PayPal (or something else?), I can send you $3.99 USD to cover it

@tootapp You can force app updates on iOS! There are a couple ways:

1) Go to the app's store page and press "update"

2) Long press on the App store icon, tap Updates, pull down to refresh, and update the app

Both are pretty quick, the first option is just a lot easier to explain.

@tootapp checking for app updates via the App Store app will bypass the staggered / phased rollout. Also, searching for the app will return the latest version, too.
@tootapp YO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
