normal things to do at 6:39 am on a monday:
nmap-scan your local network so you can find your label maker to make a tumblr meme

$ sudo nmap -sS -p9100 --open 10.12.11.*

WHERE THE PRINT IS MY FUCKER

It didn't work. Windows thinks it printed, but nothing came out of the printer :(

Fuck it, I need coffee first.

Maybe I'll go by FedEx and get them to print it for me. Do you think they're open at 7am and still have a template for labeling beta tapes?
The best part is that I'm labeling a beta tape to provide a supporting image for a mini-fic I wrote, which is about VHS tapes.

I haven't posted that story yet! I still have the ability to go edit like two lines and make it about beta instead of vhs.

But I ain't gonna.

Look, if you're dealing with VHS tapes that can alter the flow of history just by being watched, the LEAST weird thing you should expect is that sometimes they're beta tapes.
Retrocausal video tapes can have little a betamax, as a treat.
fell down the rabbit hole and scanned a label and now I'm trying to font match a betamax label please send help
it's helveticta. of course it is. it's always helvetica
my clone is gonna use arial. fuck the police
didn't print terribly well. lemme try to darken it a bit and print again.

trying to reprint it has messed up my headphones

computers are silly

different programs are arguing about how many printers I have connected.
this is not a good sign
WHY CAN I PRINT TO MY ROOMMATE'S CPAP MACHINE?
okay I have windows disagreeing with itself about how many printers it has.
that's not good

can't delete the printer: it doesn't exist.
can't remove the printer: it's in use.

MAKE UP YOU MIND

MAYBE it'll work now
nope. it seems no matter how I configure the printer (and it's supposedly installed twice now) it doesn't show up on "printers and scanners"
giving up on USB.
give me ethernet
lemme just SSH into my lettucecam so I can run nmap real quick
THIS IS THE WRONG PRINTER
I'm only seeing one printer on the right port, and it's not THIS ONE!
okay I think the printer is literally broken.
like, I've powercycled it a bunch, but it turns out it's not talking to the network, and it also won't let me run calibration or print a test page. it's like I'm locking up the firmware
There is a diagnostic tool, which detects the printer.
unfortunately...
this isn't just a driver issue: the button on the printer doesn't work.
and it never gets an IP
talking to tech support now. hopefully they can help

I gave up on getting the label reprinted properly and went with one of the failed versions.
other than the SONY getting cropped off, it's... okay.

#goncharov

so I'm on the line with tech support and they're telling me to press a button when a light blinks blue and it never does that.

so that's nice.

tech support decided the motherboard was fried and is mailing me a replacement.
SO OBVIOUSLY I opened it up to look at it.
The motherboard calls itself 470B_MAIN V3.4
U1 is a Nuvoton NuMicro M482 .
That's an ARM Cortex-M4, running at up to 192mhz.
It's got 160-64 kilobytes of SRAM, and 512/256 kilobytes of flash storage. Built in USB
U4 is an SN74LVC07A hex buffer/driver.
U14 is a TI TS3A5017 Dual SP4T Analog Switch
U9 is a CoreChips SR9700. That's a single-chip USB-to-ethernet driver chip.
U8 is a Winbond 25Q64JVSIQ 8-megabyte SPI flash chip.
U135 (!) is a 74HC123 dual retriggable monostable multivibrator with reset.
U136 is an SN74HCT14PWR Hex Schmitt-Trigger Inverter
U67 is a TI TPS54231 2-A, 28-V Input, Step-Down DC-DC Converter
U? is a BD68610EFV 36v stepper motor driver.
those are all the major chips. There's nothing on the back.
So, connectors.
JP115 (the blue-two-pin JST connector) is the lid-closed sensor.
JP54 (white 4-pin) is the stepper motor.
JP117 (black 5-pin) is the calibration sensor
The remaining connectors go into the top half, which I don't want to take apart right now.
But I can make some guesses:
THP (white 2x9 pin) is the thermal print head
J118 (red 2 pin) is the button
J114 (white 5-pin) is the status LED
@Foone Texas Instruments, that’s a find….
@Foone sorry, did you say Multivibratorβ€½
@Foone solder job is looking a bit dodgy on this one.
@Foone soooo, I've been an IT guy for a long time, and printers are one of the things that the mere mention can cause me to immediately throw whatever I'm holding as a distraction while I make a run for the nearest fire exit. The only other things to come close are Java and RECMOD.
@Foone Sounds like a round of Keep Calm and Nobody Explodes
@Foone
Ooh, sounds like a challenge! "Make the light turn blue so you can press the button!"
@Foone yo i love that movie

@Foone so that's what betamaxes looked like

yeah i only know about the digital shit unfortunately lol

@Foone will it ever come out of beta? Sorry.
@Foone nice! Too bad Tumblr terminated my account the second I posted about #Goncharov, and all of their support portals fail for me. I wonder if there's a conspiracy to hide this movie from everyone, and if so, I'm glad you have a tape.
@bleushift @Foone corrupt mods don't want the people to know about this lost classic!
@Foone printers strike again
@Foone i wouldn't count on it in current year unfortunately

@Foone
I'm surprised at three things:

1. *You* called #techsupport.
2. *You* thought they might actually be able to help.
3. *They* actually *were* able to help.

Gobsmacked I am. 😳😳😱πŸ€ͺ

@Foone That tends to be a problem, yeah. Printers like having IPs.
@Foone this screenshot is triggering PTSD-like symptoms πŸ™ˆ
Look for old spooler files in
c:\windows\system32\spool\printers. This folder should be empty, when there are no print jobs in the queue, but sometimes they are not deleted. You will have to stop the printer spooler service to delete any old files in this folder.
@Foone The absolute bane of my existence, and it only got worse on Windows 10/11
@Foone I love too wait for programs to respond
@Foone have you tried linuβ€” *gets rocks thrown at my head and consequently collapses*
@april @Foone
"We don't have time to go to no stoning. The printer's not well."
@Foone take the printer mainboard out, and bake it in the oven. Probably needs a solder reflow.

@Foone

Oh noes! There isn't a day that goes by that we don't have a report of a printer problem at work. Hope you're able to resolve the issue. I always end up buying a new printer when I have trouble at home. In fact I'm sitting next to a dead printer 😐

@Foone
And that's when the attack comes. Not from the front, but from the side, from the other two printers you didn't even know were there.
