Earlier this year, I was invited down to Texas by folk who asked me: "Do you think you could teach our assorted group of blind, low vision, and neurodiverse folk about lockpicking?"

Their results were terrific. ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ‘ This video was captured that day...

...and we are jointly publishing it as a way of sharing this lesson plan with you all in the hopes that more classes like this can be replicated by others. ๐Ÿ”“

Learning Lockpicking while Blind, Divergent, and More

YouTube
@deviantollam Canโ€™t wait to check this out.

@deviantollam The evil smirk I'd have in response would go less appreciated than I might have hoped.

"By feel" is The Wayโ„ข. ๐Ÿ˜ˆ

Thank you for sharing!

Edit to elaborate: the Lock Picking Lawyer's videos are meditative. "First, we turn all of the cylinders fully clockwise, anchor off plate 5, and start at the backโ€ฆ :click: false set, so we counter-rotate :CLICK:"

There's a joy to physical problem solving.

@deviantollam Sir - you are amazing!!! Thank you so MUCH for sharing this and being such a kind soul. #lifelonglearning #locksport

@deviantollam this is really nice. Itโ€™s so cool they were discovering re-pinning independently, that must come from how youโ€™d given them space to explore after youโ€™ve thought about this from their perspective and then at each step walked with them but allowed them to discover for themselves.

Also respect to whoever was recording. The audio was great and some good filming in what I could imagine would be quite a tricky environment to record in.

@aimaz that's Twitter.com/gatowag behind the camera and in the editing bay and, yeah, absolutely fantastic and skilled person.

We actually ran all of the audio through nothing more than my little Rรธde Wireless Go microphone set! ๐ŸŽค

@deviantollam I see, if heโ€™s used to filming the chaos of modern rogue maybe a classroom isnโ€™t so bad.
@deviantollam Started watching the first few minutes, and it looks terrific, as you've mentioned. I've always been curious about lockpicking, so def. interested in the topic. I'll be watching it later this evening. Thanks for sharing !
@deviantollam Wow ! This was a lot of fun even if only watching.
The students were beaming with joy, pretty amazing that 4-pin locks were unlocked right on the first.
I'm a total noob, I'd like to learn this and then maybe try it with younger friends/family, any practice lock sets/kits you'd recommend ?
@suvash redteamtools.com has got you covered!
@deviantollam Iโ€™m so damn proud of you.
@Tarah ๐Ÿ’š๐Ÿ๐Ÿ‘โ˜บ๏ธ๐Ÿ‘
@deviantollam You are amazing Deviant. I had tears in my eyes watching this. This and "Lawyer. Passport. Locksmith. Gun." have really highlighted just how much you care for the people around you and people in general. You give me hope for humanity. โค๏ธ

@indigo what a very kind and lovely thing for you to say ๐Ÿ’š

Thank you for watching and getting a lot out of this

@deviantollam I honestly close my eyes when picking. I find it makes me focus on my other senses and I usually solve the problem faster.
@johnnie oh indeed, that's a wise tactic which many folk try
@deviantollam I've told several people about this, per our side channel chat/hang at SAINTCON with Lonny. I'm so happy this happened to the kids, and to you.
@deviantollam this was such a joy to watch. Great job.

@deviantollam

Wow ๐Ÿคฉ

This is a fantastic video!

Creating that 3D printed kit to teach visually impaired people was a stroke of genius ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘

@TCMuffin much of the credit for the kit goes to Tony from 3D Locksport who already sold something similar and I asked him to adapt it and remix it for my lesson
plan

@deviantollam

Outstanding work between the two of you ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘

Apart from being fascinated by the subject matter in your video, I derived so much pleasure from seeing hire much the students enjoyed their time with you and how much they learned. Bravo ๐Ÿ™Œ

@deviantollam I didn't realize you knew sign language until I saw this video. I really appreciate that you're teaching folks who are differently-abled and/or neurodivergent. Thank you!

@jaybeale I've forgotten more than I remember, but it's something I do find valuable, yeah.

Lady Merlin (whose brother is Deaf) and I helped our friends in that community start the DeafCon meetup and interpretation services at DEFCON some years ago. ๐ŸคŸ

@deviantollam Wow, this was really moving to watch. You can feel them radiating happiness. Awesome work, all: your audio description, the diagrams in the video and the 3d printed models are impeccable and help understanding. This highlights the importance and effectiveness of *actual* multi media approaches to teachingโ€”as well as displaying what simple kindness and empathy can do. Hats off to you!
@ljrk this kind of feedback makes me so very happy ๐Ÿ‘
@deviantollam This is super cool. Also I had the same reaction as you when the kid brought up the Aston Martin.
@deviantollam I just sat down to watch this, and my wife and I love it as an amazing example of how to really break something down into understandable nuggets without being condescending. All while building step upon step in an accessible way. Really wonderful, and it makes me think about how I can do the same with this and other topics.
@deviantollam well done and from someone with disabilities, thank you for doing this.
@riverside thank you for appreciating it and for watching/sharing/building community ๐Ÿ‘
@deviantollam I have a lot of respect for people like you. You are genuinely happy to teach these kids.
@deviantollam such a brilliant video. Was awesome to cee the class so engaged

@deviantollam my lock picking dates way before "lock sport" was a thing, mostly for urban exploring. People would ask why I practiced with my eyes closed:
1- it's pitch dark under buildings and streets
2- what the hell am I supposed to see anyway? The interesting part is concealed behind brass and steel. Closing my eyes let's my sense of touch create a map of the insides of the lock in my head.

So, yeah, limited vision? That's something every lock pick does every time, I can't imagine the sighted having any advantage to a lock in-situ

@deviantollam I've always enjoyed the content you put out. I thought the one you recently posted on preparedness was the best, but this one easily takes the cake - the amount of love and compassion you've shown to these individuals is such a beautiful thing to see. Mad respect to you.
@deviantollam Great work on the lesson plan and class, I never would have thought lockpicking could be so accessible and taught so simply. It's crazy to see how good some of them were at it, doing better than some of the adults who were there to help. Thanks for putting this all together!
@IanCosta thanks for watching and appreciating! :-)

@deviantollam "A desire to learn should be the only qualification for getting to learn something"

As someone with a friend who do graffiti for blind people I think this is pure awesomeness and shows that anyone motivated and interested enough can learn anything. Thanks for spreading the knowledge, keep up the good work! ๐Ÿ”‘
