Some Mastodon tips I've learned:

- You need a fit, young hunting party
- They are not easy to bring down, so make sure your spears have extremely sharp tips
- Ensure you have a supply line and pack animals available to transport the meat and pelt back to the cave

@huff do you have any woolly mammoth tips?
@SentientTP Nose plugs. They're cute but they stink.
@huff @SentientTP Applies to more than just mastodons.
@SentientTP take climate change more seriously.
@huff additional tips:
- they don’t like to be eaten
- mastodons are friends not food

@huff
Don't forget good boots -- persistence hunting with holes in your soles is miserable.

@huff Apparently, also depends on type of Mastodon you're hunting & how long it's co-evolved w/ humans.

It's thought elephants & humans co-evolved over millions of yrs in Africa & instinctively fear humans.

In New World, woolly mammoths didn't co-evolve but only interacted only in the last 10-20K years.

As a result, some researchers believe woollies, being huge, did not instinctively fear humans, and would foolishly wander into human camps, fight back rather than run away, &c. Big mistake.

@Acculation @huff “only” the last 10,000 years, you say? Only.
@huff @Acculation @Lee_in_Iowa 10,000 years is a vanishingly tiny timeframe for evolution. For comparison modern humans have been around for about 200,000 years and that’s still a very tiny timeframe for evolution.
@Acculation @huff I absolutely love that the academics migrated to Mastodon!
@huff cave!! You lucky lucky bastards…We’ve just got this pathetic little Igloo!!
@huff that last one is the one that always trips you up. Good tip!
@huff Recommendations for pack animals to keep on standby?
@AmberlynWhite
Definitely oxen, short-faced bear or dire wolves.
@huff Perfect. I’ve got just the thing. Thank you.

@huff Alternatively, find a high cliff & get a bunch of your neighbors to help you chase a few mastodons over the edge. Messy as hell, but not as dangerous as the "run up & bother it with spears" technique.
If conditions permit set up temporary village at the foot of the cliff for communal butchering/meat processing/etc.

*idea stolen from Indigenous Peoples who did this with bison &/or buffalo

@gorfram @huff “bother it with spears” 🤣😂🤣
@gorfram @huff I highly recommend setting up the temporary village AFTER you drive them off the cliff, not before.
@huff trip wires made from knotted and twisted reeds can be effective if you’ve an organised team of hunters.
@huff please. All you need is a narrow valley to lead them into and a couple of boulders.
@huff I've just learned that only two people in my family fit this criteria.
@huff
OK, I guffawed at this, out loud even.
@gummibunny
@huff They smell worse on the inside than they do on the outside.
@huff @mikestevens FINALLY some Mastodon advice I can use in a past life
@huff not sure if describing actual Mastadon or users of this site...🤔
@huff Sir. This is a Wendy’s.
@huff Yes, the last is important. Those who think that a party during the winter can always return because the meat is frozen soon learn about the ecology of climax predators in the area of the hunt.
@huff and if they are accompanied by a pterodactyl, triceratops, sabre tooth tiger and a tyrannosaurus, RUN
@huff when outfitting my hunting party how important is it that they wear earplugs to avoid being overwhelmed by toot decibels?
@huff At this rate you'll drive them extinct.
@huff what are my chances if my spears are dull and worn?
@huff I use these tips for Far Cry Primal
@huff it works well to slay them I a bog or lake and let the cold water preserve them. Less work, but very cold when you really need a mastoburger.

@huff Personally I find it easier to bring the whole clan on the trip. They can hang back till the hunters are successful, and then we cook the mastodon where it fell.

Mastodons typically live in forested areas so it's no problem getting wood for the fire and wild herbs to spice the meat.

Everybody eats their fill, it's fresh meat so there are fewer evil spirits clinging to it, and there are more hands to carry souvineers back afterwards. YMMV*

*(your mastodon may vary).

@bunny_jane Oh here we go, always some Cro-Magnons out here with “take the whole bunch! Traveling party!” Let me tell you—Neanderthal ways have worked just fine for the last however many Moons, and we ain’t going anywhere for another 40,000 years, so you guys can just—
@huff But wait, I thought we don't domesticate anything other than dogs for another 5000 years?
@huff If you're able to hunt one near a river, you could use rocks to weigh down the meat, the near freezing water will keep the meat edible for weeks.

@huff

- If you are Legolas, all you need is a bow and a few arrows

@huff also don't underestimate the pincer attack. Blind canyons can be your friend, but only if you're prepared to face off with a trapped, enraged pachyderm!
@huff One more: set up camp next to the kill so you can dry and smoke as much of the meat as you can before transporting it.
@huff Scouts say that due to the immense power of spear tips made of stone they are becoming rare, so we should only bring down old ones to keep enough of them around. They should just scout harder.
@huff
Simply smear a tree with peanut butter, and they'll come to you.
Not tried this myself yet as I'm probably allergic to ivory.
@huff - try to select a site where you can drive it into a cliff face with the younger members (under 8s) wait above with rocks

@huff Ensure you have negotiated with the natives to provide enough animal fat to produce a sufficient quantity of pemmican else you may have to resort to eating the pack animals!

@huff You'll also require a time machine.

I would let you borrow mine, but I am afraid the Mastodons go extinct if I let you use them. 😛

@huff Pack animals will probably need domesticating first.
@huff there needs to be a mascot...Thomastodon?
@rustypawz @Kjun you two are the kind of fuckers who will help me do this

@huff

Sufficient experience and cunning is a good equivalent for youth.
