Is there a way to look at another servers "local" feed? Like as a way to browse servers?
@TimOfLegend sure, browse to the url like https://mastodon.art/public/local

@TimOfLegend
Not by default as far as I'm aware. I'm using a phone app called Fedilab which does.

I believe the end goal on this app is to curate enough follows/filters for people and hashtags where your home feed becomes the perfect "algorithm" across all servers.

@TimOfLegend

I think you can only do Local and Federation

@TimOfLegend
On some servers, you can go to:
https://<server>/public/local

It's server version specific if that is there or not, though.

@TimOfLegend you can browse another server. This is in Meta app on iOS. Not sure how other apps do it.
@TimOfLegend you can follow hashtags. People are pretty good about tagging stuff so that it shows up in other places. Even though I'm on social I get a lot of hits from game dev following #gamedev
@TimOfLegend hey Tim. There’s an app on iOS called Tootle that lets ya add β€œtabs” for hash tags and other servers local feeds to peek in without needing an account on em. I used it initially to start finding artists and game devs till my circle got big enough. Now I just peek in now and then. Hope that helps!

@Alapidis @TimOfLegend Thats awesome, thanks

Ive been making little nonsense accounts then following folks on my main, but thats quite a bit better

When I view the Federated timeline I get a lot of folks I didnt follow. I heard this was because not only do you get your Follows, but you get your Follows Follows. Ive bee growing who I follow from that quite a bit

@marcsh @TimOfLegend yeah it’s Home (your follow list feed) Local (instance/server/community feed) Federated (global feed from all instances (not blocked by your server))

@Alapidis @marcsh @TimOfLegend from what I understand federated isn't just from all instances yours hasn't blocked but is made up of folks that people in your instance follow from said unblocked instances.

In other words it's sort of an aggregate home feed of everyone in your instance, if I'm not mistaken.

@TimOfLegend do you have this in your instance? See pics…
@mguhlin @TimOfLegend Can you do this on the mastodon official app for iOS? I cant seem to find the option and wanna see the game dev server too
@NachiHui @TimOfLegend No, it’s not available on the official app for Mastodon. I recommend using Toot!, Tooot, or MetaText (although it may not be developed further, but I could be wrong). The screenshot pictured is of the Mastodon Web browser view, so you would best do those things on the web browser. They do get reflected on the non-Mastodon app, if those get updated. My favorite recommendation for a Mastodon app on iOS is Toot! @tootapp since it is being maintained.
@mguhlin @TimOfLegend @tootapp Thank you so much Miguel, I didn’t know about this so downloading the toot app now πŸ™Œ
@NachiHui @TimOfLegend @tootapp Oh, you will love the Toot! App. Make sure to turn on your sound really loud and then go to the supermarket/grocery. Be prepared to be escorted out by security or given funny looks by the β€œtooting” sound (several sounds available). 🀣 My wife was laughing her head off when we went to grocery and people started staring. Of course, if I’d been smart, I would have placed my phone in her purse so it would sound like she was the one responsibile. Ah, small pleasures of married life. haha.
@TimOfLegend You can do host.tld/public/local but I haven't found a way to like make a list you can follow from your account.

@TimOfLegend

Multiple options, as others have mentionned, but also:

Open an instance in your browser and click the "Public Local Feed" tab or the "Explore" tab

Another option that's not exactly what you want but might actually be even better: Follow a hashtag! Just search for it and click the + button at the top of the page.

@TimOfLegend oh wow, i just realized that question was 4 months old! πŸ˜… oupsie!
