Looks like the answer is that the 68000 did a 16-bit add in one clock just fine. But it takes a clock each for:
-Decode instruction
-Fetch data from RF
-Do add
-Store data back to RF.
...at least I think so. The internals are surprisingly poorly-documented given the age and ubiquity of the machine!

what i miss here about RTs isn't the dunking, it's having a handy format for saying "what this person tooted about is the thought i'm jumping off of". which is like...idk, i'm a big fan of intertextuality, and RTs create linked-but-not-the-same thoughts, and that is very helpful for me.
