Finished #Sandman on #Netflix last night. Great central performance by #TomSturridge . Probably the most faithful comics adaptation I''ve ever seen, with most episodes precisely matching a comics issue by @neilhimself and his various artists. I wonder what other comics series could support such a faithful issue-by-issue adaptation? (Side-by-side comparison images from https://screenrant.com/the-sandman-netflix-scenes-identically-match-comic-panels/ )
@RanaldClouston Watchmen (the film from 2009) was pretty close to the original.
@GeorgWeissenbacher I didn't see that, but my understanding was that they cut all the pirate stuff out, which is a surprisingly large part of the comics.
@RanaldClouston @GeorgWeissenbacher They also changed the ending of the Watchman story to make Dr Manhattan the external threat the world rallies against rather than an alien telepathic squid. I loved that the TV series brought that plot element back without any comment.
@RanaldClouston @GeorgWeissenbacher Check out the ultimate cut of the film, it adds that all back in.
@GeorgWeissenbacher @RanaldClouston there is a version that includes it. Biggest failing of the movie is they balked at the psychic squid monster.
@GeorgWeissenbacher @RanaldClouston don't forget about Sin City! They did a great job of making a movie adaptation of a comic!
@RanaldClouston @neilhimself Just amazing works! I'm currently listening to Act III on Audible and thoroughly enjoying it.
@RanaldClouston @neilhimself few things today hold my interest as well as this did. There so much content out there it’s overwhelming, truley a standout in a saturated market
@RanaldClouston @neilhimself it was/is amazing wasn't it. Still having to reread for the next series, so many long years of waiting.
@RanaldClouston @neilhimself I just watched the cat-centric bonus episode. It's brilliance.
@ToddCrawshaw @neilhimself Great issue of the comics series also :)

@ToddCrawshaw @RanaldClouston @neilhimself

I no longer see my cat in quite the same light, thank everything cats can't agree on whether they want to go out the door they've just asked to go out... let alone to change the world πŸ˜‰

@Lynne4Luci @ToddCrawshaw @neilhimself My dog is faithful and means well, but I don't think she would get through changing the world if there was a nearby duck distracting her...
@RanaldClouston @neilhimself Loved Tom Sturridge! It was just so good. Can’t wait for season 2!
@RanaldClouston @neilhimself The change to Gordons fate in the second episode got me in trouble with my wife though as she asked me if he was going to be ok and I reassured her that nothing happened to him... I then had to pre check every episode for story beats that might involve cute things dying.
@fabricatus @RanaldClouston @neilhimself
I got in trouble with a friend over the EXACT same thing!
@RanaldClouston @neilhimself the changes, where they happen, seem pretty thoughtful & probably lead to a better story overall. There's a bunch of shot-for-shot stuff, but also pretty big story changes to deal with 1989-vs-2022 setting for example
@directhex @neilhimself Oh for sure. I was impressed, though, by how closely the pacing of the series followed the original comics, with individual episodes following individual issues. I think for a lot of comics series this wouldn't work - the TV episodes would feel quite padded.

@RanaldClouston @neilhimself if my read of things is correct, for season 2, I expect Facade to remain un-televised as a story. They've pretty much gotten rid of all DC superhero content from the TV adaptation.

We've got Season of Mists (Lucifer's abdication) for sure.

Beyond that, not sure if they'll leave it there, try & cram in Game of You (season 1 got 2 and a bit books in, so maybe?) or go for a grab bag from Fables & Reflections which is a thicc boi.

@directhex @neilhimself I wouldn't be surprised if they managed to make Facade somehow; they found a way to do a John Constantine replacement for example.
@RanaldClouston @neilhimself having met Tom, I have to say he's a really good guy. I'm glad he's being recognized for his talent!

@RanaldClouston @neilhimself

I cannot express how much I agree with this assessment. The actors, the photography, the production and direction was superb. I enjoyed every second of watching this series. The storytelling captivated me the through the whole series as it did with the Sandman in comic book form so many years ago.

Thank you @neilhimself for making this a reality.

@RanaldClouston @neilhimself This was truly fantastic. And very faithful!
Comic adaptation next, has to be Slain doesn’t it….?
@Mrmeadart @neilhimself I don't think I know that. There seems to be 2000AD comic called Slaine?
@RanaldClouston @neilhimself That’s the one! Would be a great series… Or PJ maybe (2000 AD again)
@Mrmeadart @neilhimself I'll have to look Slaine up. I've read a bit of Pat Mills and 2000AD, but not that. Thanks for the recommendation!
@RanaldClouston @neilhimself Anytime! Thanks for the reminder :)
@RanaldClouston @neilhimself
I've read through volume 6, "Fables & Reflections". I've held off watching the Netflix show because I wanted to read the books first. Any idea how many issues/volumes the show covers?
@cjordahl @neilhimself First 18 issues of the comics series so far (half way through the Dream Country collection).
@RanaldClouston OK, got it, thanks! I'm good then!
@RanaldClouston @neilhimself and very cool to know that Netflix has green lit season 2! βŒ›οΈ
@RanaldClouston @neilhimself I read the comics a couple years ago, but my brain is like a sieve. So after watching the show and loving it so much, I went back to read the first two volumes. It surprised me how much of the dialogue and action were translated directly to screen, and how well it was done. I think I'm actually appreciating the comics even more this time around.
@RanaldClouston @neilhimself it was so very good! I can't wait for season two! Everything was just perfect πŸ’•

@RanaldClouston @neilhimself

Episode fiveβ€”the Dinerβ€”was a knock-out. #366WeirdMovies as impressed.

@RanaldClouston @neilhimself It really was just a beautiful show the whole way through.
@RanaldClouston The beautiful things that can happen when an author is actually involved in the adaptation of their work. You love to see it.
@RanaldClouston @neilhimself oh wow that show was awesome and the dude is here with like only a few of us regular folks so we can have a good shot to talk to famous folk? Awesome! #toot πŸ˜‚

@RanaldClouston @neilhimself

It was just a superb adaptation, that at a very few points surpassed its source material.

(I'll never tell.)

@RanaldClouston @neilhimself Agreed - just finished episode 11 - masterfully and respectfully done. Can't wait for season 2!
@RanaldClouston @neilhimself I would honestly love to see Neil's book Norse Mythology turned into a live action series.
@RanaldClouston As quality as the Sandman series was, I looked forward to the Grendel project so much....sigh.....until Netflix cancelled it.
@RanaldClouston @neilhimself A fashion designer friend did a fun analysis of the costuming in The Sandman because even that was done extremely well! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LbxIkk-_lOc&t=1s&ab_channel=CinemattirebySamanthaRei

@drayke @neilhimself Thanks; fun video :) The attention to detail in the series was very strong so no surprise the costumes were part of that.
@RanaldClouston @neilhimself Totally! It was one of those rare bits of media where it honestly felt like they thought of every single thing that was in each frame. Truly great work and I'm dying for series 2!
@RanaldClouston @neilhimself Yes the casting was great too, loved the show, and I never read the comic.
@RanaldClouston @neilhimself what's most amazing to me is that it was a comics adaptation with no fight scenes (in the modern way). The battles of wit were very well done and I felt showed the real power of the characters far more than punches or kicks.

@RanaldClouston @neilhimself

Maybe I really should get off my rear end and watch this too!

@michaeln @neilhimself I liked it, although my watching of it is so infected by knowing the comic that it's hard to know what I'd think of it all without that.

@RanaldClouston @neilhimself

I found that at times I felt like "I've seen this before, how could I have seen this before?" The scenes were so much like the graphic novels, and my imagination, so familiar that I felt I was re-watching it. :D

Amazing series!

@RanaldClouston I'd be interested in seeing Strangers in Paradise on the screen. I understand that Moore is working on it with Angela Robinson, to be produced by IGM.
@RanaldClouston
I remember Sin City as also being quite faithful to the comic.
@kirenida Certainly very close visually; not sure about plot & pacing but you may well be right.
@RanaldClouston @neilhimself totally agree. i was expecting the worst after what Netflix did to the Witcher. I love how the writers respected the source material. Especially the pace of the narration felt like reading a comic - and it WORKED! All the creative changes made sense and felt just right.
@RanaldClouston @neilhimself Watchmen tried to be very visually faithful to the source, but that is partly why it didn't quite work (though, to be fair, I did love the movie)
@ariehkovler On an unrelated note, happy to see you here on Mastodon - you were very important for understanding Jan 6. Followed!
