I see a lot of people migrating here & then not posting anything because they're waiting until that other site dies. Commit a bit. Post some things, interact, get to know what this place is about. You'll never know what it's like here unless you do. You might be surprised that maybe you don't need that other site. We need to commit to rejecting Musk's treatment of his employees, his interference in democracy, his moulding the world the way he wants. #twitter #twitterexodus #twittermigration

@wasootch I think a lot of people are not used to post as well, if I take myself as basis.
In the last ten years or so, my interactions (if could call it that) on twitter was just liking and reposting.
I don't think I average a dozen twitts per year during this time.

And since in here, there is no algorythn making interactions for you, people are just lost :)
(again, using my self as basis)

@cavanholi @wasootch
Yes, similar experience with me
@jezjohnson @cavanholi I understand. It is very blank slate here. What you can do is follow #hashtags on here. That will help you boost and like posts here. And see the things you want in your home feed. If you're not sure how to do that, I have a post on that.
@wasootch I've run into the problem that I never used the other site either. I was watching it burn when I realized you shouldn't watch a building burn from the inside...
@adleyjulian I know. It's one of those things where you don't want to watch, but it's also hard not too. I think there's real security issues that could happen though. I was working on a political thing on there, so I'm still sort of there to gather peeps for that. But otherwise devoting time here.
@wasootch I've been noticing a bit more engagement here than in the birdsite. I've been posting since day one of joining, at first just to "give it a try, let's see how things work around here" and now I'm trying to share and post every now and then the content I usually share in other platforms and it's working nice! I'm really happy about that ☺️
@amandaaescala Great to see. Yes, I'm finding that too. If anything, I get more engagement here for more ordinary, every day posts.
@wasootch absolutely. I love the decentralised nature of mastodon!
@markbradley Me too. It's proving to be quite fun. There are hiccups of course, but it reminds me of real life that way anyway.
@wasootch absolutely agree! you need to get used to everything here too to appreciate it. Habit is a huge factor in loving something for me.
@wasootch #twitterexodus will amplify over the next couple of weeks. What I like about the migration is starting to build relationships that were being drowned out by the blue bird noise.
@wasootch I’m finding it frustrating when I try to find people to follow but when I search for them no results show.
@wasootch I came over a day or two ago, and I’m finding it a very good site!
@wasootch Agreed Shannon, we’ve got a tabby cat just like your icon.
@wasootch I have 16.5k followers on Twitter, and am following about 13k. Connecting with people takes a time for some folks. I like the Twittersphere. Well, I like it less these days. Trying to connect with folks here now is starting from the ground up, but that's ok. It'll be worth it in the long run.
@theJMR @wasootch I must admit I find it hard to devote time to social media - I’ve always felt pretty ambivalent about it and have so many demands on my time as it is. I know many struggle with it for the same reason. But the idea that everybody is starting from scratch again, and on a decentralised, open-source platform, is pretty damn appealing. Will try harder to ‘commit’ :)
@GwynMoxham @wasootch I am hoping the anger and toxicity level here is reduced. The past few months on twitter had been a dumpster fire, with the US mid-terms and Elon et al. So far, this is kind and gentle by comparison. The noise level down by a factor of ten. I admit to enjoying it.
@GwynMoxham @theJMR That's great! Any attempts you make will build this community more. You have things to say, things you know, things you believe in. There are people who want to hear. I also don't spend a ton of time on social media usually, but this place has been enjoyable. It's kind of the first time I've found that because it is people driven. It's not really about being influencers because it's super hard to do that here.
@theJMR @wasootch I guess the influencer thing may happen as the network grows though? Or is it the lack of centralised algorithms (for influencers to game) that means it can’t happen in quite the same way?
@GwynMoxham @theJMR It can still happen to a certain extent, but there is no algorithm here. So it can't be as amplified. Not possible. There are also no quote retweets. No sense of true trending.
@wasootch @theJMR sounds like we can all just breathe :) Wonderful!
@wasootch @GwynMoxham I was not a fan of the Twitter algorithm
@theJMR @GwynMoxham The algorithm is the issue because it drives the division. At least in my opinion anyway.
@GwynMoxham @theJMR Also, people who are too nasty, combative, and performative won't get boosts on their posts. So that will tame the content they share.
@GwynMoxham @theJMR Another thing is that lies can’t spread as easy without quote retweet & many people will question the lie before boosting it.
@wasootch right on both counts. I am enjoyng the tranquility and decency. I hadnt forgotten what it looked like, because there are a ton of truly lovely people on Twitter, but this is nice.
@theJMR The people on Twitter are not the problem. It's the algorithm, bots and propagandists that are too extreme for what most people are like.
@theJMR You'll build your following here quickly I'm sure and it will be a different one in many ways. I find it's hard to want to follow accounts that aren't posting though. That's the way to build here.
@wasootch Exactly...it's like going on holiday and then not going out for a look round, but just staying in bed.
@wasootch +1 You'll be surprised at the engagement. Especially now when everyone is trying to make new connections.
@wasootch agreed. You can install a cross poster that copies your stuff…
@wasootch Yes, I agree. Start following people of interest, post, comment, write a bio. You just have to jump in. I have been learning as I go and democracy.town or "D-Town" has been very patient with me. Also, I figured out how to tip my server. There are things I don't quite understand yet, but I've connected to some amazing people.
@DebErupts Great to hear this. That’s what I did too & I love it here now.

@wasootch I post on both. I am doing more gaming, personal, and tech on here and just tech on birdie.

Out of all the people I follow, only 5 had accounts over here.

But I agree with you. I don't want to see cross posting. I want to see good posts here. I think of this as my Patreon 😅 but free for everyone!

I also setup a cool reskin of Mastodon at https://mastoplus.com and although it's in testing it's neat fun project.

MastoPlus

@wasootch Wish I could super boost this. I am trying to explain this to people. Fear is natural. I think the #hashtags is confusing as well as the instances. FWIW this article really helped me https://www.wired.com/story/how-to-get-started-use-mastodon/ Pretty excited by what I am learning.

WIRED
@wasootch I love this take! I'm all for making friends and joining in
@realarvo Excellent. If you need any help I'll try and help you out.
@wasootch I am not going cold turkey but am withdrawing more and more every day as I build up accounts that I follow. This site will be perfectly adequate for my needs and preferences.
@tstreet No need to go cold turkey. It's nicer to ease in and compare the two. Then you end up pleasantly surprised you like it here better. 😹
@wasootch I’ve been a bit shy. I don’t know why.

@wasootch
What I find helped was setting this up https://moa.party/

I realise it's a bit of a cheat but for me has helped ease the transition. Moreover, this post gets sent to my followers on the other place, helps them make the decision to jump when they see it doesn't have to be a start from scratch transition.

Moa: Mastodon/Twitter/Instagram Crossposter

Link your Mastodon account to Twitter and Instagram

@wasootch Yeah I came here thinking I would just lurk, but after like three days I was posting here almost exclusively because it's so much better.
@awkwardlefty_cj I didn’t even like it here at first and then I really did. It puts me in a good mood instead of a bad one.
@wasootch @__Chimaera abusers remain relevant for years because the enablers around them buy into the concept that they are irreplaceable
@__Chimaera I agree. He is surrounded by his minions now though and thinks he’s God.
@wasootch maybe people are just busy getting on with things......
@Kacanski No, they came over and posted nothing, didn’t update their profiles, didn’t follow anybody. I’m merely suggesting trying out the platform to see if they like it.
@wasootch I started posting as soon as I came to the Fediverse, and I couldn't be happier! People that I never knew elsewhere jump on to help, give me suggestions, and interact positively with me. What a difference from that other site. I have zero interest in going back there.
@wasootch Agreed. Mastodon is similar to the bird site in some way, but vastly different in others. I think it encourages conversation rather than screaming into the void. I like it.
@wasootch Howdy.
@Lingonomics Howdy to you too. Nice to see you here tortoise fellow.
@wasootch
To paraphrase myself, the club’s more fun when there’s people on the dance floor.
@SweetCammyMac There's lots of people on the dance floor here. But unlike Twitter, it doesn't feed the content to you. You go and look for what you want.
@wasootch @MonicaAzzolini Yes, but this need to be posted on the other place or they probably won’t even see it!
@wasootch Yep. Be the change and so forth.

@wasootch

I'm posting. I'm just boring.
