I see a lot of people migrating here & then not posting anything because they're waiting until that other site dies. Commit a bit. Post some things, interact, get to know what this place is about. You'll never know what it's like here unless you do. You might be surprised that maybe you don't need that other site. We need to commit to rejecting Musk's treatment of his employees, his interference in democracy, his moulding the world the way he wants. #twitter #twitterexodus #twittermigration
@wasootch I have 16.5k followers on Twitter, and am following about 13k. Connecting with people takes a time for some folks. I like the Twittersphere. Well, I like it less these days. Trying to connect with folks here now is starting from the ground up, but that's ok. It'll be worth it in the long run.
@theJMR @wasootch I must admit I find it hard to devote time to social media - I’ve always felt pretty ambivalent about it and have so many demands on my time as it is. I know many struggle with it for the same reason. But the idea that everybody is starting from scratch again, and on a decentralised, open-source platform, is pretty damn appealing. Will try harder to ‘commit’ :)
@GwynMoxham @theJMR That's great! Any attempts you make will build this community more. You have things to say, things you know, things you believe in. There are people who want to hear. I also don't spend a ton of time on social media usually, but this place has been enjoyable. It's kind of the first time I've found that because it is people driven. It's not really about being influencers because it's super hard to do that here.
@theJMR @wasootch I guess the influencer thing may happen as the network grows though? Or is it the lack of centralised algorithms (for influencers to game) that means it can’t happen in quite the same way?
@GwynMoxham @theJMR It can still happen to a certain extent, but there is no algorithm here. So it can't be as amplified. Not possible. There are also no quote retweets. No sense of true trending.
@wasootch @theJMR sounds like we can all just breathe :) Wonderful!
@wasootch @GwynMoxham I was not a fan of the Twitter algorithm
@theJMR @GwynMoxham The algorithm is the issue because it drives the division. At least in my opinion anyway.
@GwynMoxham @theJMR Also, people who are too nasty, combative, and performative won't get boosts on their posts. So that will tame the content they share.
@GwynMoxham @theJMR Another thing is that lies can’t spread as easy without quote retweet & many people will question the lie before boosting it.
@wasootch right on both counts. I am enjoyng the tranquility and decency. I hadnt forgotten what it looked like, because there are a ton of truly lovely people on Twitter, but this is nice.
@theJMR The people on Twitter are not the problem. It's the algorithm, bots and propagandists that are too extreme for what most people are like.
