@mojomoomoo Well it's obvious that influencers will miss the algorithm here on Mastodon. They will have to use real content instead of hype.

Not as easy for them. But bottom line not a bad thing.

@fubaroque @mojomoomoo

I assume influencers are mainly extroverts. So they will want a lot of interaction from other people.

@antipode77 @fubaroque
I think it goes beyond that, influencers get a buzz out of it and a dopamine hit. They've come here and like an addict who needs a bigger hit they get bored very quickly. Algorithms help with that on Twitter and Instagram. No such help here.

@mojomoomoo @fubaroque

And a good thing there is no help here for that.

Where we direct our attention ought to be intrinsically motivated, not externally manipulated.

The world would be better with a lot less advertising.

@mojomoomoo @antipode77 @fubaroque that's an interesting thought. So, it seems content influencers are addicted to algorithms because playing the algorithms right has a similar result in the brain as hitting a jackpot on a slot machine...

YouTube didn't create a way to bring better content to the top, they recreated the effects of a casino.

@JoelMon @antipode77 @fubaroque
They want that effect for everybody, content producers and users. Everyone gets that dopamine hit.
yesterday I switched mastodon over to slow mode. I now need to click to refresh. That dopamine hit no longer comes automatically. I think even though Mastodon is not a profit making entity, even they realise that hit will keep users coming back so slow mode is only an option, not standard.

@mojomoomoo @antipode77 @fubaroque

That really got me thinking now. The algorithms that keeps the streams going and the users scrolling for the dopamine hit is a real case for addiction.

On a slight fork that reconnects from the above, I remember reading something that boredom is a kin to mental "pain" when you are used to constant entertainment. I'm searching my zettelkasten for the source.

@JoelMon @antipode77 @fubaroque
And I'm now reading about zettelkasten

@mojomoomoo @antipode77 @fubaroque
Ha! I posted about it recently with a book and youtube video related to the zettlekasten system.

@notnorm @[email protected] awesome, I HIGHLY recommend the book How to Take Smart Notes by Sönke Ahrens. https://www.worldcat.org/title/how-to-take-smart-notes-one-simple-technique-to-boost-writing-learning-and-thinking-for-students-academics-and-nonfiction-book-writers/oclc/1003209782 The author also gave a talk related to the topic of the book that is on YouTube and it's great. https://youtu.be/nPOI4f7yCag #zettlekasten #notes #writing

@JoelMon
My brain now hurts after reading the page I did Zetelkasten.de introduction needs to use the method to format that page.
@JoelMon @antipode77 @fubaroque
Interesting, I was thinking how the method would be perfect for person Bible study, especially as cross-referencing is so valuable.
I don't know if you use XML, but it looks like XML would work on a similar basis. I don't really know XML but have seen it in use where this kind of referencing is invaluable.
@mojomoomoo writing notes in XML would be really tedious. Markdown (markdownguide.org) on the other hand, allows writing and format a document quickly and easily. There are a lot of markdown MD, editors out there that render MD as you type but they are not needed. You can write in anything you like. Check out the link I posted and see if it's something you can make use of.
@JoelMon
It kinda seems like min/maxing in a video game but too boring imo.
@mojomoomoo @antipode77 @fubaroque
@ModernDarkAge @JoelMon @antipode77 @fubaroque
Not being a gamer I don't quite get the comparison. Do you find mastodon boring?
@mojomoomoo
No. I use both Twitter & Mastodon but I always used Twitter basically the way Mastodon already is by using lists, notifications, etc. "Optimizing my presence" on social media is boring for me. I just like to read & goof off with others so I never "played the SM game" by researching methods to min/max, get the most views, followers, etc. People do the same in video games for efficiency, better gear, stats, etc.
@JoelMon @antipode77 @fubaroque
@ModernDarkAge @JoelMon @antipode77 @fubaroque
Makes sense, I like posting and never expect anything, is usually like shouting into the void. I've just got lucky a couple of times on her. And what we're doing now is what I get the most from, just chats and discussions. Even debates on here are not toxic like on Twitter.
@ModernDarkAge @JoelMon @antipode77 @fubaroque
If I ever play games I tend to not get overly involved, I think the longest I've ever played one is maybe a week or so. My mum though, I think she currently holds the highest score in the world on bubble blaster ( I know that's not gaming per se)

@mojomoomoo
I don't know that one. It doesn't sound like a genre I play. :p

With the type of games I like, getting overly involved is the objective. 🤣
@JoelMon @antipode77 @fubaroque

@ModernDarkAge @JoelMon @antipode77 @fubaroque it's a genre nobody should play. What would be up your street? I'm curious now?
@mojomoomoo
Hm, looking at the top tags on steam for me: Open World Survival Craft, Base Building, Moddable, Sandbox, Indie, Simulation & although I am wickedly good at RTS games I play those less frequently. I've played a lot of MMORPGs but it's only fun with friends. Most games are much more fun with friends imo. I'm a fan of Skyrim & Fallout: New Vegas but I usually don't find AAA games terribly interesting.
@JoelMon @antipode77 @fubaroque
@mojomoomoo
Oh lastly, I find it fun to do things like that in video games but not on SM. It's probably because I don't find attention/popularity as rewarding as intellectually stimulating activities like videos games, reading, & actual engaging conversations.
@JoelMon @antipode77 @fubaroque
@mojomoomoo we need more extroverts ! 🤣
@DevonJan @mojomoomoo that was my interpretation- seems to suit pretty much everyone
@DevonJan @mojomoomoo nah, the rest of the world is made for extroverts ... let the introverts have their space 😊[smiley face but you might not be see it]
@mojomoomoo ☑️ Ambivert enjoying Mastodon
😉
@davidrevoy
haha, I didn't think to include ambivert, plus only four options are available. Oh and don't they say that everyone has some traits either way.
@mojomoomoo No problem, I was mostly kidding about it, I added it just for pleasing my inner appeal to completionism 😆 I'm not sure anyway if introvert/extravert is a spectrum. For sure, I'm mostly an introvert that love social time IRL, but it just cost me so many energy that I need later hours painting alone to recover.
@davidrevoy don't worry i got it wasn't totally serious thanks to you using the wink emoji. It's when you have sarcasm/humour but no emojis when you have to wonder which way the post goes.
@davidrevoy @mojomoomoo Oh, me too. I think when I was younger that I was closer to a true extrovert, but with every passing year I find myself more of a shut-in...and I'm fine with that (cancer treatment/surgery left me at high risk of respiratory problems from things like Covid). Most of my friends are far-flung, so I'm social via my computer.
@zoomydu @davidrevoy @mojomoomoo another ambivert here (or extroverted introvert) I present as an extrovert in many contexts but it's so draining.
@zoomydu @davidrevoy @mojomoomoo like you I was definitely more of an extrovert when I was younger to the extent that I got energy from other people and couldn't imagine staying home on a friday/Saturday night. Lots of fomo!! Now I'm more than happy to stay here.
@JoFountain @davidrevoy @mojomoomoo Precisely this. As a teen I was involved in sports, drama, competitive public speaking, a cheerleader, show and chamber choirs, and partaker of cornfield parties on the weekends. Now...ugh. The things I do the most are largely solo (running) or just my DH and/or DS (bingewatching). The pandemic made it so that we weren't even eating in restaurants or taking in frequent movies in a theater. Even running errands is too people-y for me, most days.
@zoomydu @davidrevoy @mojomoomoo one of my greatest pleasure is going to a movie on my own. Loved lockdown. Maybe I was always like this but now I'm more comfortable in my own skin? If you haven't already I'd definitely encourage you to read this book by Susan Cain
"Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can't Stop Talking"
@JoFountain @zoomydu @davidrevoy @mojomoomoo This is the first time that I have heard the term #ambivert but I identify so much with extroverted introvert. Will use this from now on!!
@mojomoomoo @davidrevoy Yeah. Me, too (i reliably score right on the midpoint of the extro/intro scale)
@davidrevoy @mojomoomoo Came here for that: every intro/extro test I’ve taken, I basically just answered “yes” for every question
@davidrevoy @mojomoomoo One more. Extrovert in daily life, introvert online. And liking Mastodon.
@mojomoomoo after the impact of the pandemic I'm no longer sure which I am.
Via Myers Briggs I was an introvert, then an extrovert. Now I am lost 🤣😉
@mojomoomoo I think the poll has a false dichotomy, most (all?) people are both extro- and introvert, just in different measure.
@ainmosni yes, true but people generally swing one way or another, in their own view, I'm generally introverted but definitely have extrovert traits in rare circumstances. I would class myself as introverted if asked.
@mojomoomoo I feel like I'm a full on ambivert, but my current state can be intro or extro, depending on when you ask me.
@mojomoomoo how are extroverts losing? 😝

@mojomoomoo

Dedicated introvert and ambivalent towards mastodon :D.

@mojomoomoo I'm an alternating intro and extrovert depending on the situation. I sure enjoy Mastodon but do not fit in your binary.
@mojomoomoo Hmm, introvert who joined 5 minutes ago, confused by Mastodon. Ask again next week. 😉
@mojomoomoo You do realize this survey is inherently flawed, right?
@mojomoomoo probably no useful results as the people not enjoying being here won't see it. they've already left
@mojomoomoo After nearly 3 years of pandemic living, I am an extrovert turned introvert (or, perhaps more accurately, social turned anti-social). I have underlying health conditions that put me at a higher risk of a severe case of COVID-19 if I were to become infected, so I am quintuple-vaccinated, wear facemasks indoors, and still practice elaborate social distancing! Mastodon gives me the opportunity to socialize, and replaces some of my real-life interactions with people at the moment.
@mojomoomoo Ambivert enjoying Mastodon. 😅

@mondgesicht

This! XD Not yet sure, if I #enjoy it. I mean at least a little bit.
But I'm still having #trouble with the #federation to other #servers thing, which makes it hard to find stuff. (I know about # #search, but it's still less than I expect most of the time.)

And often it's #confusing that one has to go offline, and copy an address to interact with someones #content.

For #starters there is a lot to learn if one wants to use #mastodon in an #effective way.

@mojomoomoo I love polls and I’m highly invested in the results of this one 👀

@mojomoomoo As many have said, the extrovert/introvert thing is a false dichotomy. I love people but I'm sorry of borderline not neurotypical/not very good with social expectations, thus I almost always find myself on the outside looking in. My partner identifies as an introvert but she's always busy with lots of groups and social engagements. The whole Meyers-Briggs thing is highly limited. Binaries are almost always insufficient.

But I'm liking this so far so yeah, idk 🤓
