I’ve spent a couple of hours on Matodon and it reminds me of what the internet was like back in the mid 1990s. Does anyone remember IRC? Dial up bulletin boards? Like that but better. #FirstImpressions
@FreyaSu totally agreed - so happy so far.
@FreyaSu agreed. i even have the inclination of replying to threads over here. something that was beaten out of me on  .
@FreyaSu FIDONET v2
@cvjepsen 😝 I’d almost forgotten about FIDO!
@FreyaSu this is what we’ve been telling people!

@FreyaSu I very much do! I had an ibm 386 hosting a BBS on two land lines. :)

But there are apps that make #mastodon look a lot more familiar. Try MetaText for IOS. Very Twitter-esque

@paulgeller am using Metatext. It has bigger text than Toot! My eyes aren’t has *bright* as they used to be 😝
@FreyaSu I’m/use still #irc, ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
@nebiros wow! I tried it a year or two back. But I couldn’t find any good servers.
@FreyaSu libera.chat, mostly all open source projects from freenode moved to that one
@FreyaSu Absolutely. For people that didn't experience those heady days, this will blow them away.

“Awesome content for free AND nobody is trying to sell me something?”
@chema we didn’t ever think the internet could be used for commercial purposes. It was just for fun….
Same here. My first exposure to the internet was at a local university, mostly using a public Macintosh IIcx at the library and a VT terminal connected to a VAX/VMS mainframe. I still remember years later seeing my very first banner ad on Yahoo and feeling shocked at the boldness.
@chema lol was it *animated*??? Shocking.
@FreyaSu I had the same thought when I came to the fediverse too! 😂
@FreyaSu @shanselman I do, before it went truly commercial. Nostalgic.
@FreyaSu I remember it, except it was more like the early 1980's (for the BBS's) with 300 baud modems. #oldtimer
@steve I had a 300 baud. Memories. That handshake!
@FreyaSu I was thinking the same thing. FTP Mail was exciting to me. I mis gopher.
@FreyaSu definitely feeling that vibe and I am hear for it!
@FreyaSu YES (in 48pt font, bold)

@FreyaSu yeah it has that local feeling while still being able to interact with almost everyone else.
Sure this kind of system will never have some of the features only a centralized service can offer.
But maybe it's better that way? We all became lazy, gave all our stuff to big platforms.

I realized recently how the amount of properly written blogs has diminished. Myself used to blog a lot with long big monthly articles. It was my home and I abandoned it in a way

With this migration it made me realize that I want to blog again. Like old times.

@zratul I can’t even remember my blog spot password!!!!
@FreyaSu I thought the same thing about BBS’s — especially the federation aspect similar to FidoNet back in the day
@FreyaSu Well, right now it feels a bit like old Twitter crossed with the BBSes of back when, but we'll see how it survives the influx of the masses. One could argue the internet never survived Eternal September.
@FreyaSu I've been thinking the exact same thing!

@FreyaSu Social networks come and go, but IRC is *FOREVER*!!!! 😂

@pdxmisfit @shanselman 😆 it will survive nuclear winter!
@FreyaSu IRC, ICQ, MU*s, and yes, baud rate BBSs... SQUEEEEEEEEEEEWAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH....
@DNA 😝😘
@FreyaSu 😜 😍
Those were the days, eh?
@DNA oh god yeah!
@FreyaSu I remember the first mp3s I received from friends from overseas. it was like Christmas. We'd spend hours swapping... or decoding photos in email!!!!!!
@DNA I remember cassette tapes and walkmans. Headphones with foam pieces! MP3s ripping them off cds!
@FreyaSu Awwwwyeah, Playstation and Super Nintendo with buds in the dorms all night long!... when you had a major term exam the next morning. LOL.
@DNA BYO desktop box for network parties with chocolate covered coffee beans and jolt cola. Double the sugar. Double the caffeine!!!!!
@FreyaSu Quake nites and VHS dubbing parties in hotel rooms at anime / scifi cons!
@DNA quake!!! What about DOOM??? Lol. We could go on for days. But gotta get some zzzzs I have to adult tomoz 👀
@FreyaSu You're on for tomorrow then! And DOOM too of course!
@DNA totes haha. What time is it in .jp? It’s 12.02 in NZ
@FreyaSu 20.02! get some sleep, professor!
@FreyaSu
Hey, IRC never went away! 8-)

@oblomov @FreyaSu

I think you have to pay for it now
...at least here

@DillZero @FreyaSu
For IRC? What?

@oblomov @FreyaSu

for mIRC sorry.
We used that a lot back there and now you have to pay for it

@DillZero @FreyaSu
Oh yeah that client was shareware. Luckily today there are some very good clients that are FLOSS 8-)
@oblomov I used to use Perch. Or was it pirch?
@FreyaSu Pirch probably. I used mIRC at first, but then switched to xchat (even on Windows), then to command-line clients for linux, #irssi fist, and now #weechat, since when #freenode went down
