For New Users, there are three time lines:

๐Ÿ  Home: Which has your posts and the people you follow

๐Ÿง‘โ€๐Ÿคโ€๐Ÿง‘ Local: Which has posts from people on your instance.

๐ŸŒŽ Federated: Which has posts from across the fediverse (other instances). They are mostly follows of all of the people on your instance but there's a few more thrown in for good measure.

@mike Definitely good to re-boost this periodically to help people figure things out!

@mike ohmigosh that is a good idea. Thank you for reminding me I can do that!
@mike how do you see the different timelines?
@Merry120 I posted this earlier: New Users, if you're on the official Mastodon mobile app Stop ๐Ÿ›‘. It does not show all the views and confuses most new users. For Android I would suggest Tusky, for Apple I would suggest Metatext or Toot. #NewToMastodon
@mike I heartily agree!!! Unfortunately, I lost a few days being confused. That app is terrible!
@mike @Merry120 Thank you for this info! Tusky is much more intuitive than the Mastodon app.

@mike @Merry120

This explains so much. Thank you.

@mike

Hereโ€™s what weโ€™re dealing with, a seriously tech challenged child of the 70โ€™s, LOL!

I tried both Tooot and Metatext. When I got to the point of logging in, I copied the URL from my profile page to log in but I keep getting a 404 error message. No clue how to fix this.

@Xsjoy Just put in newsie.social. If that does not work put https:// in front of newsie. social.

@mike @Merry120

I don't have federated icon on Tusky.

Should I microwave my tablet and carve one from soap
so I don't bug my betters with stupid questions?

@n_dimension @Merry120 If you go to Account Preferences => Tabs you can add the federated icon.
@mike I was amazed by this when I discovered them after logging into my account on my laptop last week. Do you know if there's a way to switch between timelines on the official app or will I have to download a different app to take advantage of the rest of the social offerings of this platform?
@rachellense @mike that is exactly what I am currently puzzled about
@askari @rachellense @mike Ditto. I am guessing via accessing this platform a different way other than the app, but itโ€™s just a guess. If you get an answer, please tag me or toot me or whatever the word is! (:
@overjoyed_joy @askari @mike I ended up downloading an app called Tusky because there's no way to access those other timelines on the official Mastodon app. Hope that helps! :)

@askari @rachellense @mike I haven't used the official app, but from what I hear it doesn't support the other timelines ๐Ÿ˜•

A weird decision, but most other apps support it so you can try one of those. Tusky has served me well!

@badrihippo @askari @mike Thanks! Downloaded it last night--seems like a nice app so far. It's got all the timelines at least! ๐Ÿ˜…
@mike thanks this is a super useful reminder. One thing that I didnโ€™t know is that the app doesnโ€™t capture the three well, which definitely affects experience. Any idea about other apps which hook into mastodon but allow easier access to all three?
@mike @rich_norman MetaText is great for iOS But honestly just download 2-3 free ones and play for five minutes. Youโ€™ll get a sense of what you like.
@mike whatโ€™s the difference between โ€˜Postโ€™ and โ€˜Communityโ€™ on the iOS App under the magnifying glass icon?
@Manitobbes I don't personally use IOS or the official mobile app so can't really say. Usually post means to send out a message and community my be your instances local timeline but I'm guessing.
@mike I haven't figured this out yet. Where can I switch between those 3 in the app?
@ethicalthinker Hi, I wrote this earlier: New Users, if you're on the official Mastodon mobile app Stop ๐Ÿ›‘. It does not show all the views and confuses most new users. For Android I would suggest Tusky, for Apple I would suggest Metatext or Toot. #NewToMastodon
@mike Hmmm...thanks. I can't do that right now though because I'm unable to reset my password (emails never arrive, saved password doesn't work) and this is the only place I'm logged in.

@mike Mike, I had to make you my very first "follow" on Mastodon just due to the fact that you are a gold mine of tips for us new users. Thanks for making thing a lot clearer.

* Just downloaded Tusky on your advice.
* Will start following a lot of users
* LOVE GOING TO CANADA to fish and be at one with nature
* Sorry, I'm a BlackHawks fan, but always enjoy the Jets games.

@mike thank you for this! Trying to figure out mastodon after 12 years on Twitter is such a learning curve and posts like these are incredibly helpful.
@mike What does "instance" mean in this context? (I'm in the U.S.)
@sarahsarai Your server, in Mastodon speak it's called an instance.
@mike Thank you. a great help to all us newbies x
@LeFouGallois No Problem. I'm looking for users for our instance, if you know any Canadians or wannabe Canadians..Lol๐Ÿ˜‰
@mike
A HUGE thank you from a Welsh Parisian that is new on here X
@mike. Canada now in 3-5-2 formation.
@mike thank you for this post. I'm still learning my way around Mastodon and need all the help I can get!
@mike I prefer #Explore to any of the other timelines!
@mike wish I had seen this when I started
@JS_WordSmith I send this to every new member of the Canadian:
