“Mastodon is sort of a weird sad office birthday party with four people sitting around eating sheet cake with all the lights on compared to Twitter being like Studio 54.” https://www.buzzfeednews.com/article/katienotopoulos/mastodon-twitter-replacement #tech #technology #twitter #twittermigration #twittermigrate #news #journalist
Mastodon Is Supposedly A Twitter Replacement But Sign Up Is Hard

I tooted, but I didn’t like it.

BuzzFeed News
The party’s just getting started. Hopefully, more folks will come.
@taylorlorenz to me Mastodon is like when you are among friends just chatting and chilling out. And Twitter is like a loud party where sometimes you raise your voice to be noted or try to impress someone.
@Moke @taylorlorenz YES! Twitter is all about the numbers of “likes” and “retweets.” Mastodon is more about sharing info. Twitter was a rapidly moving river full of kayakers racing about whereas Mastodon is a calm lake, with a couple of speedboats, because, of course they’re here too, but with lots of people lying on floats and sitting in inner tubes with their toes in the water, sipping something cold, new, and refreshing.

@Moke

And also the bouncer is tossing people out.

@taylorlorenz Like Stusio 54 with all the people on club drugs and making poor life choices you mean.
@taylorlorenz I wasn’t paying attention before. How do we edit the typos out?
@taylorlorenz idk I'm having a pretty good time. Maybe it's because I have friends here /lh
@taylorlorenz Haha!
"I’m a tech reporter, I generally understand how to use things on a computer.
Wrong."
@taylorlorenz on some level it reads on how much we expect apps to baby bird feed us content while also complaining about algorithms,
@taylorlorenz Thanks for this 🤣 it's fun to feel smarter than a tech reporter
@taylorlorenz It’s really interesting to completely… restart after so many years on Twitter
@taylorlorenz sounds like the author is a bit full of themselves.
@taylorlorenz Pass the sheet cake, please.
@taylorlorenz Nah. I think Mastadon is like getting together with a group of friends to chat over a glass of wine or a beer. Twitter is a rave.
@taylorlorenz and yet at the Studio 54 party, it is impossible to have a thoughtful conversation due to all the noise and chaos, while the sad office party actually gives you a chance to interact with people you may end up liking and learning from (I know there is a grammar person connected with me, don’t hang me for that dangling participle!).
@taylorlorenz I'm trying to figure this out! I loved Twitter ... but what it was, not what it now is. So let's roll, Mastadon.
@taylorlorenz If Studio 54 were filled with abusive fascists harassing the other folks, perhaps
@taylorlorenz wow... just... wow. But actually, if she had started actually talking to someone at that party, she might have discovered an incredibly interesting, complex person. Her loss.
@taylorlorenz Buzzfeed has a buzzkill on staff

@taylorlorenz Just read your piece. No offense but maybe it'll take a week or so to grow your network and begin enjoying using Mastodon? I've been on for eight days now.

I agree, joining Mastodon was a bit confusing to sign up for at first (reminded me of how weird Twitter was to use when I first joined) but I had the benefit of my friend Amanda setting up her own server and publishing this Mastodon 101 doc to read before I actually joined "for real"

Mastodon 101

@taylorlorenz DEVELOPERS 👏 DEVELOPERS 👏 DEVELOPERS 👏 DEVELOPERS 👏 DEVELOPERS 👏 DEVELOPERS 👏 DEVELOPERS 👏

@taylorlorenz It's so weird how both the Mastodon official app and joinmastodon.org seem to put forward new servers, instead of having recommended ones.

Also, "I tooted. But…that was that. I followed the BuzzFeed News account (which hasn’t tooted since 2018), but there was nothing else. I checked out the “Explore” tab, which was full of a bunch of Thought Leader types like Jeff Jarvis (no thanks)." What? Why would you go to be normies on Explore instead of staying with the cool kids on Local?

@taylorlorenz Mastodon is neat it's literally micro blogging minus the heinous algorithms that build most of micro blogging websites
@taylorlorenz
On average I'd say Mastodon is more for people who don't enjoy music too loud for conversation, lighting too poor to see, and company too rude to befriend.
@taylorlorenz Unlike Twitter, Mastodon's not a party that one can just show up to and expect to be entertained, and that's kind of the appeal (for some, at least). It's a party where you need to invite your fellow guests, who then bring their own friends. For me the 'sad' air of it went away quickly once I started following people from other servers.
@taylorlorenz This is like Elon Musk, who is diagnosed on the spectrum. Teaching people interact with each other.
@taylorlorenz As someone who has attended many RL weird sad office parties, no it isn’t. But maybe it’s all for the best that folks like Ms ‘Please Like Me’ find Mastodon unappealing.
@taylorlorenz I respectfully disagree. It’s more like eating dinner in your kitchen with friends and family.
@taylorlorenz
Yeah—- Just wait till the guy with the REALLY good cocaine gets here… Then it’s nothin but disco & free-love without consequence from here on out!

*sweats profusely*

“Is that Disco Duck they’re playing?I!!…”
💃🕺
@taylorlorenz Twitter is like an ecstasy party that spilled into a crack den. Mastodon is more like a sidewalk bistro
@taylorlorenz it’s been a month. Twitter was a ghost town when I joined too.

@taylorlorenz

Lack of effort is not a good look for a tech reporter.

There should be a different label for gadget and social media drama reporters.

@taylorlorenz Ya, as a community we need to be better about providing good onramps to new people, although this is somewhat of a new problem since previously we wanted you to be determined to come here so this wouldn't become the birdsite. But the article is like, I made a Twitter account and followed two people and no one was there, Twitter sucks. That's what basically any new social site would be like.
ClickHole said one of their goals was to make fun of sites like BuzzFeed and I totally see what they mean now.
@taylorlorenz And yet, here you are. Jeepers, I think that might be an example of irony. You should leave in a huff. Or a minute and a huff if that's too short. Or you could choose to leave in a Snit. With white sidewall tires.
@taylorlorenz This is pretty apt, considering it was pretty much a circlejerk of the most influential people, with conversations similar to people high off their tits on quaaludes.
@taylorlorenz but I digress.
I'd try to look inside yourself and ask why every last thing you do, should come with a dopamine drip. Post important things because.. they're important! If you really need a consistent pat on the back for simply being alive? This might not be the place for you.
Cheers.

@taylorlorenz i guess it comes down to whether you prefer cake-heads or coke-heads if you know what i mean and i think you do

personally it's been a while since i've been so intrigued and optimistic about a new social platform tho, so i'll take the sad party even tho i don't like cake

unless it's #cheesecake

@taylorlorenz To continue with the metaphor: Mastodon is like a cozy bar down the road that I go to for drinks and conversation on a Friday night, to avoid the wild crowds at Studio 54/Twitter, which is also overpricing drinks and putting terrible music since the new management. The other bar may close soon if it doesn't get enough customers, but so far I like it.

@taylorlorenz

Studio 54 closed in early 1980 after the men who started it were convicted of tax evasion.

Good analogy

@taylorlorenz Re. #Buzzfeed vs. Mastodon: I like that kind of office party. It's where you might see Jim and Pam finally getting together in a corner, and Kevin is gonna offer up some amazing chili (if he can keep it in the pot). Studio 54 is where you try to be heard over coked-up a$$holes and Dwight Schrute is somehow gonna steal the date you've been buying drinks for all night.
@taylorlorenz wait -- there's cake?!?
@taylorlorenz The article is cringeworthy 😶
@taylorlorenz When I only had one mutual from Twitter on here, I likened it to being at a party where you don't know anyone except for that one person so you basically follow them around the entire party until it's time to go home.
@taylorlorenz I'm sorry, but the author of the article is being deliberately disingenuous. Is Mastodon different? Yes. Have there been issues with signups recently? Yes. But it is what you put into it, and it's clear that she made no effort whatsoever to find like minded people on the site and learn how it all works. It's not difficult. Seems like she was being deliberately contrarian. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
@taylorlorenz It looks she just tried for three minutes and she gave up…
@taylorlorenz @peepeepoopoop re: "First, I downloaded the Mastodon app from the Apple App Store. I have since learned (maybe?) there’s more than one app, or something? The appeal is that it’s decentralized, so having more than one app client makes sense, OK, I get that.", Twitter also has alternative clients - I think @paul @bigzaphod can attest to that 😄
