OMG I just realized Mastodon is what Twitter would be if it were Canadian
@Pwnallthethings great, I've only been here a day & I already have to say sorry eh?
@CrankyCyborg @Pwnallthethings Here for 2 years, and I think I've said 2 sorries. I don't really remember, and all the registries were destroyed.
@Pwnallthethings IIRC it's descended from Canadians (identi.ca and laconi.ca) even if it's a German...
@Pwnallthethings Now: say that again in French, please. Maintenant: dites-le à nouveau en français, s'il vous plaît.

@Cydonian @Pwnallthethings In French, in a slightly larger font, and above the English part please.

I do have to fine you. That'll be $1,000 Canadian, or $10 American if you'd prefer.

@Pwnallthethings let’s go see what that toot is all aboot
@Pwnallthethings As an American in Vancouver, I have to say Mastodon doesn't seem THAT expensive
@IntlLawGnome @Pwnallthethings as a Canadian-American living in that beautiful city where forest touches mountain and mountain touches sea, the cost of tooting is nowhere near as much hell as the cost even of bandwidth, both fixed and cell.
@Pwnallthethings this exactly how I felt coming here….
@Pwnallthethings I wish this were true, but 10 minutes on Canadian Twitter would show you our people can be racist, abusive, conspiratorial assholes just like anyone else.
@smaclellan @Pwnallthethings don't get me started on the eff Trudeau covoy people. I'm surrounded by them idiots here on the prairies.
@Pwnallthethings yer gonna be sorry for saying that eh?
@Pwnallthethings I wish that include Grade A Maple Syrup - I am almost out of it :(
@Pwnallthethings hey dial back the moxy mister...

@Pwnallthethings cleaner, friendlier, and just as racist!

(sorry, I couldn't help but comment on the current discourse and my experience living in Canada)

@joehumphrey @Pwnallthethings With a high murder rate too, compared to Western Europe anyway.
@Jodami @joehumphrey @Pwnallthethings Our murder rate is pretty low considering the population density of some of the areas in question. https://www150.statcan.gc.ca/t1/tbl1/en/tv.action?pid=3510007101
Last year, Toronto had 93 homicides in a population of 10 million.
Number and rate of homicide victims, by Census Metropolitan Areas

Number and rate (per 100,000 population) of homicide victims, Canada and Census Metropolitan Areas, 1981 to 2023.

@joehumphrey @Pwnallthethings you’re not wrong about the racism. At least we’re trying to fix it.
@Pwnallthethings hahaha, you know, you're more right than you probably imagine. /ping @blaine
@smari @Pwnallthethings @blaine as a canadian, hold your horses, there, bud, let’s crack a 2-4 and head to the lcbo to grab half an ounce of some primo kush
@smari @Pwnallthethings I feel like @[email protected] is an honourary Canadian, but between @evan and I, it's safe to say the fediverse has some strong Canadian roots, eh?
@Pwnallthethings I first did the same parallel with a "Swedish Twitter" but then I realized that we have a lot of tech-bro Twitter fanboys.
@Pwnallthethings perfect! I’m so happy - found interesting and funny people here and very few unpleasant ones!
@Pwnallthethings really? No one has apologised to me yet for something I did to them. Because that's Canadian.
@Pwnallthethings
I'm not sure I can get used to the lack of hate and trolling compared to twitter. But it is what it is.
@Pwnallthethings That's a perfect observation - right down to the accessibility fail.
@Pwnallthethings This is disturbingly accurate in all the ways.

@Pwnallthethings it’s how I remember t***** as back in the innocent days when I joined in 2009

There's a bit of a storm happening around the criteria for joining http://fediscience.org - the Mastodon instance for scientists, on which I'm hosted. It's been noted that the requirement to be a publishing scientist (who has published in the past 5 years) will exclude many junior scientists, retired sciences, and those who have maybe switched to teaching. I agree with these concerns and wonder if the criteria can be changed to be more inclusive? Cc https://fediscience.org/@FrankSonntag

Twitter, but not as toxic or salty as Twitter!
