Journalist-turned-wonk working at the intersection of comms and policy. Still nerding out over disinfo and security. Honorary Slovak. I don’t normally post this much about football. #AllezLesBleus she/her
I don’t even recognize this team. Maybe they really do all have the flu. #FRA #WorldCup #putain
I know #FRA isn’t off to a good start but I can’t stand #ARG’s “let’s draw a penalty every 2 minutes” strategy. It’s cheap and tedious. #WorldCup
This is what Twitter is now defining as "doxxing people's location." A factual piece of reporting about the company blocking a competitor. Can't do anything until I delete it.
The folks at the margins are the canaries in the coal mine with #tech and #media. They should have been listened to a long time ago. https://www.amnesty.org/en/latest/press-release/2018/12/crowdsourced-twitter-study-reveals-shocking-scale-of-online-abuse-against-women/ That said, they also have solutions that need to be heard. The recent banning of #journalists comes after academics who study far-right radicalization were banned and harassed from the site, which comes long, long, long after ordinary femme folks and #peopleofcolor told us about things like brigading and how to stop it.
Amnesty and Element AI release largest ever study into abuse against women on Twitter

Amnesty and Element AI calculated that 1.1 million abusive or problematic tweets were sent to the women in their study in 2017

So I understand that the bird site has started blocking links to common/known Mastodon instances, and that doesn't seem like free speech to me. So... I did a thing.

If you go to https://spacekaren.sucks it is now a URL shortener that blocks the twitter user agent. That means you can share that link that will redirect to your Mastodon account without the pouty baby stopping you. If you find this helpful can you boost so others can find it? #TwitterMigration #Mastodon #Musk #introduction

Space Karen Sucks

Free speech really should be free. To bypass the new censorship regime at twitter, use this URL shortener to link to Mastodon or other censored destinations. Considering recent policy decisions on twitter, please be aware that use of links generated from this site may constitute a violation of their policy.

So it looks like I’m going to be on my local CBC (Canadian public radio) station in about an hour talking about my #FRA fandom? Sure, why not! #WorldCup #MastodonFC #allezlesbleus
“The destruction of safety & integrity teams at Twitter has been acutely felt in the US and Western economies, but it brought them in step w/ the rest of the world—abandoned and ignored by social media... Twitter had previously failed to fully develop transparent and accountable systems to ensure safety. It is this lack of structure that Musk has been able to weaponise” — #digitalrights activist Nighat Dad https://www.context.news/big-tech/opinion/safety-and-survival-on-twitter-around-the-world

As Twitter disintegrates, there is an opportunity to build solidarities that centre the experiences of marginalised communities

One thing I admire about the #fediverse is that it represents the efforts and thoughts of a set of people who rejected a particular type of tech determinism - it rejected the way things were ‘meant’ to be. The celebration of one extremely wealthy individual being able to upend the habits and rights of others as being ‘the way the system is meant to work’ will never not be astonishingly conservative to my mind. It’s like the US’s own very own hereditary monarchy problem….

AFSA Statement: Suspension of VOA's Steve Herman from Twitter | American Foreign Service Association

For Immediate Release December 16, 2022 Contact: Executive Director Ásgeir Sigfússon | [email protected] Washington, D.C. – The American Foreign Service Association calls on Twitter to immediately reinstate the account of VOA News correspondent Steve Herman. Mr. Herman is a career member of the United States Foreign Service and a member of the AFSA Governing Board. The

I saw someone on Twitter talking about last night’s brouhaha over ElonJet and reporter bans complain that The Federalist had been suspended ‘for conservative beliefs’ and no one cared, so I went to see what happened. Very early in the pandemic they were blocked for a tweet sharing an article encouraging COVID parties; they were allowed back on once deleted.

When it’s too hard to remember details - info overload - rhetorical sleight-of-hands get a lot more support than they otherwise would.
