Seriously. Who's up for it? #MastoMusicCollab

Let's define some rules. I'm (wide) open to suggestions, but here's what's on my mind:

- Interested musicians, reply with what instrument you can play.

- Define who's doing the first base track (the whole mood of the final song will be heavily influenced by it, of course, so maybe it should be somewhat "unopinionated", so not an overly specific genre or anything).

- Agree on the order in which we want to record more tracks. For each one, I can do a rough mix of the previous tracks.

(cont.)

- When recording each track, also record yourself on video. Let's make this a visual thing too. I (or a better video editor) can edit it.

- Also needed: someone who can mix the hell out of it (or I can do a shit job of it if need be).

- Probably upload the final thing to YouTube (open to suggestions!)

What say you?

@MTP I love it, "Nod To Sam", it's not immediately obvious (not to me, anyway) 🤘

@cambraca @MTP Love the name!

Wonder if anyone associated with developing #Mastodon or #ActivityPub are named Sam? Could be a cool hidden 'homage' to it. 👍Bands need hooks, ya know? 😉

I see the video now, a guy with a mastodon mask, sign around his neck that reads "I am Sam" wandering in and out of random scenes aimlessly behind the musicians... Can you say green screen? Lol

The official band: "Ladies & gentlemen, scallywags & prawns, please rise for the Mastodon national anthem!"

@wolfgang @wokingchoral @braydenwise @mcmullin @themodestokid @cambraca @diskonformist @sean @mwhiteside @radioanywhere @stevenhenry @msirt @MTP @lopodyr @beeellecee @christorkewitz @jengomes @audiodude @mkelley @SunnieLarsen I’d like to just throw this out to the group since there is such a good interest. I used to use Kompoz.com (I have no affiliation) and they have a unique paradigm that we could adopt. Might even be useful to use their site. Basically it’s a freeform collaboration (1/2)

We basically all start with the same basic files, then people with similar likes can branch off. Basically make multiple songs in a freeform inclusive way

@Johnny hmm it does sound interesting, but for the first project, I'd like to keep things simpler. I went into the website and they talk about all kinds of conditions and licensing and split agreements... for now, I just want us to _do_ something and put it on the web.

But, also, there are 20 people already on the sheet, so we should probably split into groups. I can "direct" one, and people can volunteer to do the same for others.

@cambraca maybe shared Google drive folders. Can you add a column “Genre you are most interested in” it might help to group users
@Johnny yeah, exactly. I'll add that col
@cambraca just realized you have it already. 🤦🏼‍♂️
@Johnny oh, no, I added it *just now* (but also moved genre stuff from the "notes" column to it, for the people that had filled it 😉)

@cambraca Replied on the spreadsheet - basically, I'm a woodwind multi-instrumentalist and keys/piano player, happy to lay down whatever tracks make sense in that domain.

Cool to see this come together - thanks for kicking off!

@Jazzaria excellent! Thank you! Let's do this!!
@cambraca I’d be down for what ever needs filling in. :) Accept for anything visual.

@cambraca - Absolutely! I always add my stuff to youtube, so let's make that a thing.

- That'd be me, the sound engineer and pedant!

- Yes again.

@cambraca Guitar, keys
@DocInVt HELL YEAH I'm adding you to the spreadsheet. Let's do this!
@cambraca Coming back after 10 years of not performing… be patient plz.
@DocInVt software can do wonders these days ;) (speaking from experience)
@cambraca not sure on what way I can help. my skill level is very low. I call it campfire guitar and monophonic synth. I can use a DAW to mix and edit and add sfx, but I have no formal training. I am a radio DJ at a community radio station.
@PlayAllTheThings no degree required. Add yourself to the spreadsheet! a monophonic synth can do magic. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1q52YMCun8_q7MjHCZwtdmQ2cDjVGu9FV4O_BZ36aaug/edit

@cambraca I play flute and I sing! I'm not particularly great at composing but i do have a lot of flexibility.

@cambraca I'm interested!

- I mainly play the oud these days, but also classical guitar, charango, domra, mandolin, tanbur etc.

- I don't mind either way. Can do either. Why not one of each and see where it goes?

- Sounds like a plan, as long as the rough mixes are just for reference/playing more stuff along to, as I prefer to mix everything in one go at the end to ensure a properly balanced mix (I'm a sound engineer pedant!)

@dusepo Loving your enthusiasm and pedantry! yes, rough mixes will be temporary.

I just added you to the spreadsheet :) 👉 https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1q52YMCun8_q7MjHCZwtdmQ2cDjVGu9FV4O_BZ36aaug/edit

@cambraca A very interesting idea! Are there platforms on the web which support that kind of collaboration? Or people could upload the *.wav tracks on a sharing hoster.
@cambraca Another question is, since you mention it, should contributors receive a mix of all former contributions so far, or all existing tracks in *.wav format? Or both?
@cambraca waaay too much on my plate right now or I'd jump =)
@litui I hear ya. For some reason my brain keeps wanting to start more and more projects these days. Hell, I almost started a wiki today, it took so much effort to stop myself and go back to my day job.
@cambraca As it so happens, this is one of the things I'm heavily involved in already. I'm one of the music directors at Untitled Virtual Ensemble. Check us out! https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCvhC101M5cX3NUNMlUAJqYA/

@cambraca Wow … dudn’t anyone come back on this idea to you? I looked through your chain of replies and … it eere only yourself speaking about it.
✌🏻🖖🏽😊
@rykthekreator oh yes, there has been some activity, but nothing's been completed yet. We're gonna bring this project back to life sooner or later, you'll see 💪
