Mitch McConnell—who is in an interracial marriage—just voted no on codifying interracial marriage.

If this is what MAGA GOP thinks about their own spouses, imagine what they think of Black & brown people unrelated to them.

@QasimRashid i don't understand why... What's his reason?
@veereadstoomuch @QasimRashid MM can let the Dems do the right thing, the courageous thing, and then MM can get the benefit. He sees NO positive to supporting the bill, only negatives with 'the base.' It's PURE CYNICISM.
@blueknuckle @veereadstoomuch @QasimRashid  Yup. Plus he assumes (correctly) that the base (boy, is THAT ever the right word) doesn't know that his marriage is interracial and wouldn't believe it if you told them.
@chuck88 hahaha BASE! i see what you did there
@veereadstoomuch Fun fact: "Al-Qaeda" translates as "the base." Just a coinkydink I'm sure.
@veereadstoomuch @QasimRashid It also codified marriage equality for gay couples.
@QasimRashid my answer is 'he's an @$$hole.'
@QasimRashid what is "codifying" please? Thx
@MerylORourke @QasimRashid they can’t force states to validate anything, this is due to how the federal govement can’t force states to enforce federal law. What is being Codie is here is how states must recognizes marriages legally performed in other states including inter-racial marriage, and repealing DOMA which blocked marriage protections for same sex couples.
@skymtf So they just might not recognise the marriage? If I went to that states suddenly my husband has no rights to be my next of kin??
@MerylORourke I assume states would get to decide on that, though technically you have a full credit clause in the bill, my best guess is this will be entirely "up to the states" which again is an ugh. but there are limits of what congress can do, I doubt it will ever be the same.
@MerylORourke @QasimRashid ask Mr . Google
@drk @QasimRashid Or, you know, I could make more conversations on a discussion website which I've just joined, or that, ya know? Find out in his own words and discuss. Or ya know we could just all scroll silently in our own little bubbles.
@MerylORourke @QasimRashid I could scroll by but sometimes I feel snarkey...
@QasimRashid GOP is always about 'for me but not for thee'
@QasimRashid What must his wife be thinking or feeling?? Also, how have we not codified interracial marriage already??

@weareallstardust @QasimRashid

loving v virginia could potentially be overruled or otherwise nullified. it's based on an interpretation of the 14th amendment and can be removed with a different interpretation of the 14th amendment. it's rank bullshit but we need explicit amendments granting these rights or it'll never be fully codified.

@weareallstardust @QasimRashid

as for how we haven't...we (as a society/citizens of this country) have sat back too long content with temporary rights granted via rulings. we need to get actual amendments to get actual rights. that and we need to fix some of the other ones like making slavery illegal without exception. marriage equality rights, fully ban slavery, fully protect voting rights and get rid of disenfranchisement. amendments are needed for all of this.

@QasimRashid Excuse me but I do believe it's MAGAGA now.
@QasimRashid On a side note, besides being in an interracial marriage, his (2nd) wife Elaine Chao is an immigrant (Taiwan). #MitchMcConnell
@QasimRashid that is incredible. The hypocrisy is overwhelming.

@QasimRashid because it also codified same sex marriage, though, right?

Edit: to be clear, that's something I want too, but I believe that would destroy McConnell's political career.

@QasimRashid makes for an awkward wedding anniversary
@QasimRashid Wait until it hits SCOTUS. Think Thomas will rule against himself? He's just that lacking in self awareness...
@QasimRashid it should be noted there are way more nasty things that can be said about Mitch McConnell than this
@QasimRashid I literally cannot wrap my mind around this. And he does nothing when Drumpf insults his wife with overtly racist comments! But the Ultra MAGAts love it! 🤯🤬🤢
@QasimRashid He figures the MAGATs don't know that he's in an interracial marriage. Probably a good assumption.
@QasimRashid at this point I think Mitch McConnell is more worried about sticking it to those that don’t agree with him than actually doing meaningful legislation.
