Eilean nam Ban, known locally as Seagull Island, is a mile or so out of Kinlochleven on the north side of Loch Leven. Historically, it was used as a meeting point for clan chieftains to settle their differences and more recently as a location for a slightly more adventurous wedding.

@andy_morehouse beautiful image! do you know why it’s called Seagull Island and not by it’s Gaelic name or a translation of it? It’s so far removed from the Gaelic meaning! #nerdquestion
@julie I have no idea, it’s just a local nickname. There were never even any gulls whenever I visited!
@julie @andy_morehouse was wondering that. Isle of the Women must have a story behind it. There is a similarly named island off the Ross of Mull. Where Columba banished the women apparently!
@geologymull @julie when I did ask locally, the only answer I got was “it’s always been called that in the village”
@julie @andy_morehouse
JULIE what would the correct translation Gadhlig=> English litterally and in expression be?
asking for my #reenactment theme
@andy_morehouse Thank you. I’m reading a book set on Loch Leven atm & this has helped me visualise it all the better.
@SWSnop13 interesting! Would you mind sharing the name of the book? I lived there for a few years and never heard of anyone setting a book there.
@andy_morehouse- Sure, it’s an Alex Gray book - ‘Echo Of The Dead’ I don’t read much police procedural as I prefer fantasy & sci fi, but this was a book club choice. I think this series is usually set in Glasgow but this one is about Glencoe. The loch has been mentioned several times already.
@SWSnop13 Thank you! Will take a look.
@andy_morehouse Lovely photograph, green-eyed. 😜 Interesting info, new to me. I'm writing short fict. Bronze age but like all periods of Scots hist. Thx for this.
