One interesting side effect I just noticed is that when I think about opening twitter I am immediately filled with dread about how bad the discourse is going to be and when I think about opening Mastodon I'm.... vaguely hopeful? I know it may not last but it's a fascinating feeling.
@joshuatopolsky I have found Mastodon so much more friendly. In my first day here I had two amazing converstations. That never happened on Twitter.
@joshuatopolsky Mastodon is what social media should be. Color me hopeful.
@joshuatopolsky I always look forward to opening Mastodon. The vibe here is great.
@joshuatopolsky So many interesting conversations here!
@joshuatopolsky i agree its like i can mastodon on a whim, but for twitter I gotta get ready to handle some shit
@joshuatopolsky feels a lot like Twitter 2007ish.

@joshuatopolsky I feel like every third post of mine here is a version of this. We’ve been saying “Twitter is bad” for years, but now we really know!

Also, if you go by the Fourth Law of Joshes — when multiple Joshes agree on a thing, that thing is as close to truth as we know — then who are we to say otherwise.

@joshuatopolsky @joshsternberg I would like to add a 3rd Josh to the mix. ✅
@joshuatopolsky @joshgammon and now we enter The Josh of Thirds, where the distance between Joshes dictates the strength of an argument. The closer you are the more correct you are. If only the world lived by the Laws of Josh
@joshuatopolsky probably because, currently, people come to Mastodon for a better quality of life. It's like moving to a nice neighborhood where the air is clean and the neighbors look out for each other.
@joshuatopolsky Exactly the same feeling.
@joshuatopolsky It could last. It depends on who you bring over.
@joshuatopolsky i go to twitter when i feel like being agitated 🙃
@joshuatopolsky the friction of having to choose your server eliminates some of the imbeciles from the get go.
@joshuatopolsky Same. 😌 Especially when people like you who have been following tech for decades are here.

@joshuatopolsky When I have opened Twitter of late I've noticed how annoyed I suddenly feel. Like I didn't notice before because I had no non-algorithmic alternative to compare it to.

Could be some interesting research here for a psychologist.

@joshuatopolsky I agree with that feeling! And yea, it may not last, but for the moment I will treasure it and enjoy it!
@joshuatopolsky The vibe here is far less anxiety provoking, this is true.

@joshuatopolsky it will last as long as we make it last.

And when it fades, it’s time to move to a new platform, which is what we probably should have all done in 2012 or so.

The biggest problem with Twitter is that it overstayed its welcome. All of its issues stem from that.

@joshuatopolsky

I like this take, it's similar to my experience. I've had some surprisingly very good discourses on Mastodon so far. I do hope that the decentralized nature of it will help keep this spirit going as things scale up.

@joshuatopolsky It's so true. When I do go over there, it always seems to combative. Here the engagement is so much more positive.
