One feature I like about #Mastodon: whenever someone modifies a toot that I had boosted, Mastodon notifies me of this modification.

This simple feature has great potential for tackling disinformation that may arise from possible toot modifications.

#disinformation #fediverse

@jsamwrites that's awesome I didn't know that!
@jsamwrites Umm ... how do you "modify" a "toot"? (Toot is a stupid term, BTW, it needs to be destroyed/replaced.)
@jsamwrites This is one of the things that feels like such a good benefit of edit functionality when implemented well (like this)
@jsamwrites It will be the same with Twitter’s edit button, which is just available on Twitter Blue…
@jsamwrites I would love if they also added an easy way to see what changed.
@jsamwrites
One place where I've seen an immediate benefit was when a viral piece of artwork was going around uncredited. Thanks to the edit feature the post got the artist's handle added and everyone got the update.
@jsamwrites What I can not see or find is how you can see the original version, to check what was said before vs now.
@mattwilcox @jsamwrites an edited post has a small down arrow on the status line just under the text. You can click that to view any previous edit.

@pieceofthepie I'm not seeing that interface. I only see a star next to edited posts?

@jsamwrites

@mattwilcox @jsamwrites You have to go into the post proper.

So this appears:

@pieceofthepie Found it! Thanks, that's useful. I'd rather see that in the main timeline feed though than have to click into a detail view. Nice. @jsamwrites
@jsamwrites Only tangentially related, I'm also pretty excited about getting notification that polls I voted in closed.
@jsamwrites I agree that this is actually a very good and important idea. Around a year ago I was actually thinking about open-sourcing a script that could automatically make posts to social media (possibly distributed around multiple accounts), wait until the post gained a certain amount of likes/retweets/exposure however it would be measured on the corresponding platform and after that automatically mass edit the posts to actually say something entirely different to show the...
@jsamwrites ...implications and how this easily could be used to shape and manipulate or at least give a false impression about public opinion. Unfortunately never got around coding this though. Thank my university degree and job for that I guess. To be fair though a lot of sites have an edit history for exactly this purpose I guess. But you'd actually have to click on it and read it though so I guess the notifications are a better solution.

@jsamwrites

Hopefully the same is true for toots you've replied to?

@jsamwrites Can you modify them? I thought you can only delete and redraft, which would get rid of all likes and comments.
@nonizur It's possible to modify your toots on certain Mastodon instances. With the release of Mastodon 4.0, more instances may activate this feature.
@jsamwrites Oh good, I really want to be able to edit!
@jsamwrites Are you a fan of the work Christopher Bouzy has done to tackle misinformation?
@jsamwrites it makes me feel uneasy about correcting a typo in a post that has been boosted
@themodestokid But sometimes, it helps when the information needs to be updated.
