#Suggestion: Point #TwitterMigration to the Fediverse so not everyone is flocking to a Mastodon instance.

You see, the network is the #Fediverse, the underlying tech is #ActivityPub (which is a #WebStandard).

Mastodon is, but one of many flavours connected to the Fediverse network. There is no “Mastodon network” or "Pleroma network” or “MissKey network”, they are all “Fediverse network”.

Promote the Fediverse. That is what who we are.

@youronlyone I think it has to do with the fact that Mastodon is a way more catchy name than Fediverse. Pleroma sounds a bit like Pneumonia so I don't think it's the most catchy either 😂.

Maybe we need a new name for Fediverse?
Flocks? Ganggang (a type of Cockatoo in Wiradjuri language)? Torinet (tori is a bird in Japanese) - sounds a bit like Clarinet ☺️

@dimi @youronlyone

IMO, "fediverse" isn't a terrible name, and "mastodon" is just as cute.

The main issue is, as @youronlyone pointed out, is that many people conflate the two.

Just like a thread the other day re hashtags #mastobikes vs #fedibkes

@gowin @youronlyone There was once a network called Fido (if you're younger than 40 you are unlikely to know it). The logo was a dog with a floppy disk in his mouth, in Ascii art.

Maybe something we can visualise? I mean I know what a mastodon looks like, but it's way more difficult to visualise a fedi 😅
Any idea of a cute animal that could be the new Fediverse? Like Tux for Linux?

Let's call Fediverse Omnipotamus (as in all the rivers) and have a cute hippo!

@dimi @youronlyone

Interestingly, the long history (in Internet years) of the #fediverse concept pre-dated #ActivityPub , which today is the major comm protocol in the #fediverse, but not the only one.

Honestly, the fediverse kinda reminds me of fungal spore networks rather than animals.

Possibly, not a good candidate for a mascot -- but hey, mushrooms can be made cute 😅

@gowin @dimi

"fungal spores" sprung up the image of #StarTrek's "mycelial network".

@youronlyone @dimi

I had to pause for a second there, and then remembered that the recent #StarTrek discovery episodes did have that.

My default StarTrek tech were warp drives, and sub-space communicators.

@gowin @youronlyone

Maybe we should revive this thread and ask @albinokid and @Mastodon what they think about renaming #Fediverse the "Mycelial Network"...

With all the mushrooming instances, it might be appropriate 😊

But no tardigrades here, only Mastodons 🤣

@dimi @youronlyone @albinokid @Mastodon

I actually remembered this exchange when I read this toot today: https://social.polymerwitch.com/@polymerwitch/109345739045713392

Attached: 1 image May our networks be like mycelium -- connecting us together, decomposing the old, and making the soil fertile -- for what comes next.

Mastodon

@gowin @dimi @albinokid @Mastodon @polymerwitch

Lovely! Great minds think a like!

We definitely should use #MycelialNetwork instead of #Fediverse as the name for the network. ^_^

What do you guys think?

@youronlyone @dimi @albinokid @Mastodon @polymerwitch

And, just in case this gets picked up by anybody else interested in #mycology #mushrooms or #mycological lit .... there's this book on mycelia you might find interesting to read

Mexican Gothic - BookWyrm

From the author of Gods of Jade and Shadow comes this reimagining of the classic gothic suspense novel, a story about an isolated mansion in 1950s Mexico--and the brave socialite drawn to its treacherous secrets.

He is trying to poison me. You must come for me, Noemí. You have to save me.

After receiving a frantic letter from her newlywed cousin, Noemí Taboada heads to High Place, a distant house in the Mexican countryside, unsure what she will find. Noemí is an unlikely rescuer: She’s a glamorous debutante, more suited to cocktail parties than amateur sleuthing. But she’s also tough, smart, and not afraid: not of her cousin’s new English husband, a stranger who is both menacing and alluring; not of his father, the ancient patriarch who seems fascinated by Noemí; and not even of the house itself, which begins to invade Noemí’s dreams with visions of blood and doom. Noemí's only ally in this inhospitable place is the family’s youngest son. But he too may be hiding something dark. For there are many secrets behind the walls of High Place, as Noemí discovers when she begins to unearth stories of violence and madness. Mesmerized by this terrifying yet seductive world, Noemí may soon find it impossible to save her cousin—or even escape this enigmatic house.

@gowin @youronlyone @albinokid @Mastodon @polymerwitch

Errrrr... GOwin, are you sure it's the right book link?

@dimi

Hahaha. Maybe we can get away with it, since #StarTrek's use of the “Mycelial Network” is different from how we're [going to] use it.

(And LOL, yet another inspiration from StarTrek.)

@gowin @albinokid @Mastodon

@youronlyone @dimi @albinokid @Mastodon

It's a good candidate for a nickname!

It just doesn't roll in your tongue as easy as #Fediverse, and some may even find it too geeky.

Let a thousand mushrooms bloom! 🍄 (Sorry, Mao!)
