Unfollow that account you hate. Stop reading that book you think is meh. Close all those tabs.

Life is simply too short.

@crystaljjlee no, no, please don't tell me to stop watching that annoyingly bad TNT action television show on hulu!!!
@crystaljjlee But what if one day I need one of those tabs! How about I only close all the tabs in Edge, and I keep the ones open in Firefox and Crome?
@Platform_Journalism @crystaljjlee came here to say pretty much this. I *might* need one of those tabs!!!
@Platform_Journalism @crystaljjlee I just share them to a note taking app and never think of them again!
@crystaljjlee But if you do dull things, it will feel longer.
@crystaljjlee I thought that said "stop reading that book you think is meth" for a split second
@ch1m3r4c0mpl3x @crystaljjlee Those split second misunderstandings can be so entertaining sometimes!

@mattly this one's for you! 🤣

@crystaljjlee we were just commiserating over excessive tabs earlier today.

@crystaljjlee I still have a hard time with it, even though every time I did it, it both felt great at the moment and it was the right choice in hindsight!
@scheidegger definitely! I saw somewhere else on the thread someone talking about declaring tab bankruptcy and starting over, haha
@crystaljjlee I guess mastodon is interesting partly because it was a good excuse to declare Twitter bankruptcy too. Huh.
@crystaljjlee About finishing books, lol -- it's a compulsion to finish what one starts. I had such a tough time getting through The Count of Monte Cristo, but I had to do it. That exposition tho!
@crystaljjlee this is not a "well actually" but I do want to tepidly motivate I'm favour of reading academic work we dislike. I've spent a lot of time doing reading of the TERF literature that my friends (some times accurately) call my "self-harm research", but it's been fruitful. Better understanding that work has helped me better respond.
@alexbryant I actually 100% agree! I think this is particularly true for academic work most vehemently disagree with — reading and responding to the best possible version of the arg is important and a lot of that comes from laborious things like wading through TERF lit. What I’m talking about here is sunk cost, where you feel like you *should* finish bc you already started, when in reality there are so many other things you could be engaging with!
@crystaljjlee Oh yeah fully with you on that part--as my many abandoned, mediocre audiobooks can attest to 😅
@alexbryant hahahah, that makes me feel better about myself too :)
@crystaljjlee this sounds like a great impetus to watch that movie I've been meaning to get around to.
@crystaljjlee ….. close all those what? WHAT?!
@crystaljjlee Until you have six hours to wait for surgery and then you appreciate a good book and social media.
@crystaljjlee You had me until tabs. You can pry my tabs from my cold OOM PROCESS KILLED
@crystaljjlee when it comes to books, DNF is A-OK!
@crystaljjlee but even a meh-book can turn into a great one.
@crystaljjlee if it sucks, hit da bricks!
@crystaljjlee @crowbar Exactly the mindset it took for me to realise I didn't need twitter in my life!
@crystaljjlee "Easy to say", as just thinking about doing those things makes me quite anxious about "potential of missing something important or lifechanging"...
I wonder if it might be related to me being on AS and probably AuDHD.
#ActuallyAutistic #AuDHD
@crystaljjlee Also - feeling like it's in a "not finished" state almost feels like a reminder of it burns my mind.
@crystaljjlee Today I boxed up those books I’ve kept and know I will never open again, ready to take to the book warehouse tomorrow. And then I can buy some more at the next Lifeline Bookfair. #books #reading
@crystaljjlee i was with you until the tabs, some of them i opened 3 computers and 2 house moves ago, they're practically family
@almostconverge @crystaljjlee did you know some people use chrome extensions that auto close tabs that haven’t been visited in the last 30 minutes 😱😱😱
@crystaljjlee You lost me at close the tabs! 😅
@crystaljjlee Love that the responses are essentially, "get away from people, get rid of books, but you will pry my open browser tabs out of my cold dead hands."

@crystaljjlee
Close all those tabs. Empty your cable drawer.

“Hey now let’s not be too hasty, who knows when I’ll next need that weird usb cable again…”

@crystaljjlee I’m with you except for the tabs.
@crystaljjlee Bad wine down the sink too
@crystaljjlee the real time eater is work though.
And getting a meaningful job is much easier said than done unfortunately. :/
@crystaljjlee
Sometimes life does it for you
@matthias_aulbach Ctrl shift T (or Ctrl+Z on some browsers) will bring that tab right back
@crystaljjlee good points although for me when you get to 500 tabs open it’s easier to just open new ones than spend time managing old ones

@crystaljjlee If I don’t give a review on the book that’s really not working for me, I won’t ever get to #netgalley 100% completed 😭😂 #bookreviewer

Overall I agree though!

@crystaljjlee BUUUUUHT!

Yes, indeed I use browser tabs as short term bookmark system and if I'm busy with some project I'll easily have 20+ tabs persistently open for weeks.
That said, this doesn't invalidate the point you made to rid oneself of anything that is an annoyance and fulfills no purpose. "Life hygiene" one could say.

@crystaljjlee I leave my tabs open until I can no longer remember why I’d left them open. The advantages of old age ;)
@lilliassh @crystaljjlee recently I lost all tabs and wanted to invest time to retrieve them but then could not remember a single tab. So, I. just. let. all. tabs. go. Difficult, but finally such a liberating feeling and no lesson learned looking at my open tabs again. There should be a "close all your tabs" day, like during spring cleaning time.

@n3Rdia @crystaljjlee once I get to the point of not remembering why I've left tabs open, I've got to realize that they're just not that important. Because if they were, I'd have gone back to them.

You're right, it is liberating!

@crystaljjlee I am only just learning to put down books when I don't enjoy them. It has taken me over sixty years to develop the discipline to do that, for some reason.
@stevechampion I’m still learning too! :)
@crystaljjlee I was with you until the tabs!
@crystaljjlee quit the job you hate. Work less, play more. Take more vacations.
@crystaljjlee truer words were never said, says this 76 year old!
