the point I think I'm trying to make is that #mastodon cuts off a lot of options for referential communication, and I do think that limits discussion. you can't say "let me bounce off of your comment to make my own point", or "remember this thing I said? I thought about it and I revised my opinion" in an easily accessible way. this means you're forced to either reply directly to the person (ENGAGE ME IN DEBATE, STRANGER), or make your own post and lose the context (miscommunication likely).
this is the problem when thinking about anything with #AuDHD. I get distracted by the various loose threads of a topic and end up with so many complex ideas in my head that I can't translate it anymore.

#mastodon is probably right not to allow us to boost a post with commentary. we can't be trusted with it. it's just easy to go way too far, even if you feel justified.

oh, I don't know. there's so much to say about how twitter changed online communication, and the incredible sociological and linguistic impact it's had on the world, and the question of "was it for good?", and "does it matter if it was good? it is what happened."

but obviously it also opens up a lot of avenues for harassment, i think because the indirect nature of it ended up creating a dehumanizing atmosphere. and this harassment is not in the least limited to hate towards marginalized groups, either! the nature of twitter stops us thinking of others as "people" anymore, but as "accounts", "comments". we are reduced to a few 200-ish character statements, people are encouraged to make up their own context, and we're judged.

one thing #twitter sort of perfected was a very unique form of indirect communication in the quote-tweet. like talking about someone while they're literally standing beside you. and honestly, sometimes this was really good! like sharing someone's art and saying "this is my friend, everything they make is this cool, go look", or changing a brand's sponsored tweet into a silly pun in a "serfs laughing at kings" sort of way.

New people, if you think mastodon is slow and that it doesn't work, be patient. opening millions of new accounts takes up a LOT of server.
– We met on Mastodon. Not on the same server, but we saw each other’s toots on different federated Mastodon servers. And Hamilton got up the courage to migrate his account one day and DMed me.
– Yeah, I’d seen you online before. And I know that sometimes I’d be on one server and then you’d be on the other server, and then I’d think, maybe I should migrate over to that server the next weekend. And then you’d be at the other server. So we kind of crossed… I know. It sounds so stupid now.
It's the weekend, baby
