Stephen Fry

I find myself in the same position I was in during the early days of the birdsite, wondering what to post. Don’t want to be political or polemical in these early days, but mustn’t be too bland either. Not going to show you the scones I baked, share my latte art or describe my sourdough starter. Nor should I plug my current productions just yet. Easy enough to know what we don’t want Mastodon to be …

@emmahoneybone @stephenfry Me too. I was so excited when Stephen followed me in those early days (2009 for me). I rather suspect it was just a case of following "everyone" at the time, and I doubt you ever _actually_ read anything I tweeted, but it always felt special to me :D

@stephenfry Dear Mr Fry, I love you for what you do and what you talk about generally when you've gone to give talks.

I also love how you're very honest about your depression and that has helped me and LOTS of others feel more confident about seeking help etc.

I don't even know if you'll read this, but all I want to say is... please just be yourself. 🙂

Also, thanks for helping me with my Scrabble game on the bird site a good few years before!

@stephenfry I feel similarly, albeit with a much smaller audience than you. I’m told hashtags really matter here but what do use when talking about my day-to-day life? I’d like to feel like part of a community here rather than an observer like I was on the bird site.

@stephenfry One of the great features of Mastodon is the “content warning” feature (which I like to think of as a context or category button). Want to post about politics, but unsure how followers here will react? Put it behind a “content warning” for “US Politics” (or UK or EU or whatever the topic is).

@joannegillam @stephenfry While CWs we’re initially to help avoid triggering people’s PTSD, their use has expanded far beyond that. When you watch television, you may sometimes want the news and sometimes want to get lost in movies about cats. Same with mastodon. Sometimes I just can’t deal with politics. Or religion. Or celebrities 🤩 j

@stephenfry @shawrd773 I have seen people use it for far less serious topics. And let’s be clear: scones are definitely controversial. I’m a traditionalist, and 95% of the baked goods sold as “scones” in the USA are entirely un-scone-like. True scones do not have raspberries and white chocolate and are not the texture of muffins.
