What's inside your bank card
@stux
A tiny piece of capitalism ^_^
@stux My favourite part of that is Hannah Fry paying only £3 for a coffee. I want to go wherever she goes.
@stux I've done that experiment myself. It really does work.
@mansr @stux What did the barmaid say to your new "card"?
@attilakinali @stux They know me all too well at my local pub.
@mansr @stux Ah.. it was a "This Swedish guy is at it again!" 😆
@mansr @stux Come on mate, don't post pictures of your credit card for everyone to see.
@stux loved this program! Look forward to more in the series

@DeeRuddock @stux same here! I thought it was really interesting.

The interview with the OG card cloner brought up so many cherished memories... of... uh... doing absolutely legal stuff like that, back in my dumber days of yore.

@stux monies. But it's empty right now.
@stux Wow! Thanks for posting this!
@stux

Brb gonna go make my own ApplePay tag with my bank card.
@stux this is amazing! Now... can I do that and implant the chip in my hand....? It would probably only work a few times before asking me to insert card and pin...
@stux cool share loved that thanks 🙏🏻
@stux There was somebody who did that with an Oyster card for the London transport network and then transplanted it into a magic wand so they could use the wand to pass through the tube station barriers with an "open sesame!". ☺️
@stux yet another reason to love Mastodon: I don’t have to rush-scroll past a headline like this because it sounds like an ad 😄
@stux I watched this agog as she paid for coffee with the microchip and antenna!
@stux Brilliant. So my working, beating heart of my debit card is a thin wire and a chip. I never knew that: I thought it was the mag strip that carried data.
@stux it’s a little strange to see her on something other than Numberphile. Really cool video.
@stux And thus, a million hacks were born.
@stux Saw that show - history of the tech is quite interesting.
@stux That's mind-blowing! I always wondered how it works, but it's amazing to see how tiny it is.
@stux Years ago I remember someone doing the same to a London oyster card (travel pass) and putting the chip and antenna into a wand 🦯 with a star on top. They could then just tap onto the gate and it would open!

@stux usually even a better light source (like the one from phone's camera) is enough to see through the card ;)

Also, yay, Hannah Fry! :}

@stux lovely sequence, very informative.

Putting an industrial solvent into a drinking glass that will later be re-used for drinking, even after a wash, is a huge no-no though. ⚗️☠️

@stux

Wow!

@Fascinatorfun @stux I watched this programme- really interesting
@KateCushing @Fascinatorfun @stux I too really enjoying Hanneh Fry's secret genius of modern life. The credit card one was quite a revelation.

BBC Two - The Secret Genius of Modern Life

Hannah Fry uncovers the secrets behind the miraculous technologies of the modern world.

BBC
@stux Reminds me of my youthful days when I made a crystal radio. The power coming down the aerial was enough to power the tiny earphones to listen to an AM radio broadcast. Magical!
@stux wow. In two minds about whether to show my youngest or not!
@stux Great video. But also a reminder that Mastodon isn't complete until Hannah Fry has an account, over here.
@tswerts @stux I've actually ended up in this thread, because I was Googling "Hannah Fry" and "Mastodon" looking to see if she was here yet 😂
