Little Mastodon tip if like me you find the content warning culture here overly annoying, you can just go into your settings and tell it to auto-show all posts and/or all sensitive posts. So you can effectively get rid of the content warnings for yourself but let everyone else still have them, which is cool.
@brkeogh if you find the culture here annoying, you can go somewhere else
@aeva or i could just tick a box in settings
@aeva @brkeogh That's not cool. The great thing about the #fediverse is that people can set it up to work for them and find a place they feel at home.
@aeva @brkeogh Brendan’s too cool for CW; he’s switched it off man. He’s raw-dogging his TL 😃
@brkeogh yes provided I guess you use them on your own tweets, if appropriate? I have to say I really like the feature, it cleans up timelines and is a bit like a story/headline header. Allows people to opt in, rather than have everything shouting at them.
@athenamedia yeah not saying don’t use them, just nice to not have a double click every other post if you’re not worried about content
@brkeogh Can you screenshot that setting? I'm an idiot and cannot find it.
@condalmo not at my computer atm but on the main settings page it’s just right at the bottom. But it might not exist on the app..
@brkeogh @condalmo Yep. Not in the iOS app. Just go to the web interface and fix it there.
@sneydman @brkeogh I'm on Android, not seeing it there either. I think I found it on the website but it's still hiding posts? I'll have to tinker with it later.
@condalmo @brkeogh Yeah not sure if it’s the everything is slow as molasses to take effect thing, or it’s only new posts but doesn’t fix old ones, or it just isn’t working. Sure is a quirky place!
@sneydman @brkeogh Better the quirks over here than the jerks on Twitter!
@condalmo @brkeogh
I couldn't find the settings screens everyone was talking about, keep an eye on the three lines at top right, even when you think you are in settings, there is another level up there....
@condalmo @brkeogh I'm using Husky, but I think it's the same - click on your picture and go into the Account Preferences option that appears. The sensitive content settings are in there.

@condalmo @brkeogh on the web version of mastodon go to the hamburger menu (3 lines in the upper right), then preferences/appearance, then scroll to the very bottom and check "Always expand posts marked with content warnings"

I really appreciate the thoughtfulness of content warnings and being able to check or uncheck this option depending on how I'm feeling at any given time.

@missandilou @brkeogh What is justmytoots.com for?
@condalmo @brkeogh because boosting is so important on mastodon, justmytoots shows you only what the person themselves posted, without the boosts. I have found it useful for getting to "know" people a bit better following, so decided to post mine in my bio for others to do the same before following me. Helps me find my own damn toots too!
@brkeogh does anyone else have the issue that this appears not to work on the iOS app?
@Jslez oh yeah you’re right! Wonder if there’s a different settings menu on the app for it?
@brkeogh the CW thing is such a self-parody. folks demanding they should be able to follow people and then force those same people to add warnings to whatever random subgenre they’ve decided somebody has “anxiety” about. suggest, ask, unfollow, sure - but demand on pain of expulsion of entire servers? there’s nothing progressive about that #CW
@Jslez @brkeogh agree. I decided to post my CW stuff on twitter, since I had so many telling me my content needs to be cw on here
@laracroft @brkeogh please post it here and just ask them to unfollow
@Jslez @laracroft i assume part of the issue is a lot of people look at feeds of people they don’t follow? I appreciate there’s an existing culture but rules like ‘put anything political behind a CW’ is silly. It’s cool the CW is built into the platform tho. And i really like it for long posts as just like a title card
@brkeogh @Jslez People cant just scroll past?
@laracroft @brkeogh @Jslez it's really just a little courtesy and consideration. I do it when I'm having a bit of a whinge so if someone's having a great time they don't have to read my vibe kill.
@Jslez using a CW gives others the choice. If you don't like it, you can get the posts to open automatically by changing your settings.
@Sarahw that feature doesn’t work on mobile. and entire servers of journalists are being de-federated by people demanding that CW their entire work
@Jslez it works fine on my android phone
@Jslez @Sarahw are you using the native app? Don't. It's shit. Use the web interface or a 3rd party app to get better functionality.
@froodie @Jslez @Sarahw Any specific app suggestions on Android? I haven't had too many complaints about the native app, but maybe I just don't know how much better it could be.
@froodie @bkoppe @Sarahw omg I just downloaded metatext it’s immediately so much better
@Jslez @froodie @Sarahw Sadly it's iOS only. Looks nice though!
@bkoppe Tusky seems to be the best on Android.
@bkoppe @Jslez @froodie @Sarahw Tusky for Android, its a fantastic app that I've been using.
Megalodon for Mastodon - Apps on Google Play

Mastodon for Android but it's pink and has more features

@bkoppe @froodie @Jslez @Sarahw I'm using Tusky and I really like it.
@Jslez @brkeogh It's my least favorite thing about this place. I'm new and don't think I get to throw around a bunch of judgements. But sInce I'm still evaluating different platforms & options, this is high on my list of considerations. At the very least it will substantially limit what I'll try to discuss here.
@brkeogh @JulieNye @Jslez it definitely depends on the instance. Some are more into it than others.
@brkeogh @Jslez I think you can set it on the web and then it will work in your apps.
@Jslez @brkeogh yes... Very annoying.
I'm completely with the #CW approach - and use them now, liberally, myself. After all, the warnings are aimed not at everyone, but as protection for those who don't want to see what *they* might consider sensitive/triggering.
I don't know why the native app radio buttons to 'show all media/content' don't appear to work at present for those of who are happy to disable the protections. Has this been raised with the app developer?
@logienick @Jslez @brkeogh yes, I posted that feedback in a review in Apple App Store.
@Jslez @brkeogh It doesn't seem to work on Android mobile app, either.
@Jslez @brkeogh Show all content doesn’t work on the official Mastodon App. See my comment above. I’ve given feedback to App Developer in the App Store. Hopefully it will be fixed in an update in due course.

@brkeogh the issue is less about how to read the posts yourself than it is about having empathy for others to choose to read your posts if they are of a nature that would be discomforting to others.

CW are about others, not you.

@quay exactly this. A CW gives others the choice. It's easy to override in your settings
@Sarahw @quay real question - Can’t you choose not to follow people who don’t use CW’s?

@elonjames @Sarahw Of course. But that’s still off the point. CW are about you showing respect for others. IRL, we use ‘CW’ all the time. I don’t just burst into a room and start running off about my itchy penis. I have that convo with only people who want/need to hear about it. CW allow us to emulate normal human behavior online to a certain extent.

To repeat: CW are outward-facing choices you make as author of self-expression. You use them to show care for others.

@quay @Sarahw but some would argue talking about racism is the equivalent of talking about an itchy…ahem. They don’t find it to be inappropriate for polite convo. And I can assure you I discuss the topic no matter what situation I’m in. Your comfort around the subject doesn’t outweigh my right/need/desire to speak about it publicly. What if I didn’t want to read about a woman’s period? Should women CW an aspect of their lives for my comfort?
@elonjames @quay @Sarahw
But maybe it's a Black woman after a shitty day full of micro aggressions at work who doesn't want to read about racism after coming home?
@Sarahw @quay @indri This seems like concern trolling. I should hide any discussions of racism because a hypothetical Black woman might not want to read that? I’m sure Black women follow me on here and I’m pretty sure they are aware that I discuss racism. If this hypothetical Black woman didn’t want to read about racism I’m pretty sure she would just skip social media because BW are one of the most targeted groups around. Highlighting racism is a public good.
@elonjames I appreciate your point of view. I suspect lots turn off the hide CW feature I do, I find it a nuisance to uncover every item I want to see. There is the option to filter toots using key words but that's more onerous than adding a CW. But insisting that one is heard seems like shouting over someone who doesn't want to listen. Yes, many topics are important to discuss, but many are listening, it's giving a choice.
Thanks for an interesting and polite discussion
@indri @elonjames @quay @Sarahw plenty of Black and other PoC users on here have talked about varying perspectives on CWs, some for some against. But we mostly agree that white people trying to decide on our behalf is annoying at best :P

@elonjames @Sarahw if what I’m saying lands that way then I apologize wholeheartedly.

Speaking one’s truth is of course a higher order. The difference between your scenario and mine is that absolutely nothing is lost to me by circumspection. In your case, you lose your voice and part of your self-ness and that it unacceptable.

So, no, speaking your experience is not something that should be CW. If someone is saying otherwise, I would fervently disagree.

@quay agreed and this is why it’s cool you can just turn them off for yourself while other people can still have them.

@brkeogh and in v4 people will be able to set up personal cw filters for specific hashtags (so not removing them completely from the timeline).

However, it will be a while before v4 becomes the dominant mastodon version on servers.

@brkeogh Excellent tip, thanks
