I've been working on a guide about traveling through #Japan for ages. Ever since spending 6 months in 2013 as an #ExchangeStudent in #Kumamoto, I keep going back to Japan and wanted to collect the most handy tips for my friends (and everyone else) that visit the country for the first time. There are also a few easy #Japanese tips coming up, that gonna help you get around. 🏯 #MastoArt #illustration #guide #travels #traveling #art #drawing #tips

The first topic of my #TravelGuide for #Japan is #food, because one of my favourite things to do is try new things!

Do you have a favourite #Japanese food? I personally love #Okonomiyaki Hiroshima style - cabbage pancake, layered with egg, #Yakisoba (fried noodles) and bacon. 🤤 I also really like #Natto and everything with #Mentaiko (pollack roe).

In #Japan each city, prefecture and region has their own thing that they are famous for. From fruits, to products and even special dishes. Make sure to check what the region you are going to is famous for, so you can try it!

Do you have a place you want to go to because of their meibutsu? I really want to go to Aomori and try their apples! (3/X)

How to find a restaurant in #Japan. Spoiler alert: It's pretty easy. 😅

When you are entering a restaurant in #Japan they will ask you how big your party is. Here is a handy #guide how to respond.

When I was in #Japan for the first time I was extremely anxious about entering restaurants, because where I lived, nearly nobody spoke English, there were no English signs and no translation apps. (I didn't even have internet on my phone back then.) My #Japanese was ok-ish, but I still couldn't read Kanji. So this was how I managed anyway.

Today it will be much easier, because (esp. in big cities) they are prepared for foreigners and will give you an english menu right away. #MastoArt

Another handy #Japanese word that helped me a lot in #Japan was "Kore", literally "This here". Maybe not the most polite way to order something, but it gets the job done.

In #Japan they use completely different hand gestures. Some of them are very contrary to what other countries do. Here is a selection of the most peculiar ones. #MastoArt #illustration
(🧵8/X)

A lot of people want to see #Japan in spring, because of the cherry blossoms, but I really think fall is just as beautiful and completely underrated. Just avoid summer at all costs!

Counting in #Japanese is a surprisingly complex thing.

@noodydraws

Fascinating, I had no idea! 😮

Props regarding the very elaborate alt text, by the way! 🌟

Reisetagebuch November 2018

Unser Reisetagebuch von der Reise im November 2018.

@noodydraws Wife and I were lucky to make it to Tokyo in the Fall of 2019. It was a beautiful and wonderful time. Just keep in mind typhoon season - we literally landed with one hours away. Kept us in the hotel for the first 2 days.
@ExiledKing Very true! I would recommend going in November, there is a lower chance for typhoons then, but you never know! I hope you still had a great time!

Länder, in denen man nie „Daumen hoch“ zeigen sollte

TRAVELBOOK

@noodydraws The come gesture is the same in Korea, I believe.

Edit: Oh, and the explanation for the Playstation controller's layout is fascinating!

@crucifixGlitch Yeah, I've traveled a lot through Southeast Asia after and found that a lot of those gestures are a universal thing for many Asian countries. 🙂

@noodydraws

Those info graphics are awesome! 🤩

I wish I had those when I visited Japan a couple of years ago, the would have been so useful to me back then! 😄

@duke_of_germany Then you might have to go back and use your newly gained knowledge! :D (honestly, all of these are just a collection of: "Wish I had known this when I lived there..")
@noodydraws I definitely want to go back some day! 🙂 I have only been there once, for three weeks, and it was not enough! 😄
@noodydraws Ist "heran winken" in Japan genau die umgekehrte Geste? Also eine Art "weg wischen"?
@AH_NiCO Ja!!

@noodydraws

Falls dir was einfällt sag bescheid 😅
@noodydraws Nice! Love the fun fact about the game controller :)
@noodydraws this is really interesting! Thank you
@noodydraws @ionica So I can just count to someone else using Dutch Sign Language, except that I have to invert my hand. But the same finger use. Doing that in (hearing) shops, in particular in Spain does not get me what I want: I get one more than I ask for, as these people start counting using their thumb and include it automatically.

@noodydraws i remember the first time I got on a bus in de UK. I paid for my friend and me and said to the bus driver: two. While I signaled two by sticking up my index and middle finger.

Happy to have made it out the bus alive.

@afbdijkstra That is a rude gesture in the UK?😲
@Lon the rudest even
@afbdijkstra I thought it meant victory, never too old to learn! 😂

@Lon if you have the inside of your hand facing the person your greeting it means 'peace'.

Turn your hand around and all of a sudden you're acting like a hooligan.

@afbdijkstra OMG, I feel embarrased, I have never noticed that. 😲 Thank you!
@Lon @afbdijkstra You mean ✌️? It does mean victory, peace or just "I'm taking a photograph" as well :D
@noodydraws Is it right that 6 = 4, 7 = 3 etc.? Or am I missing some nuance?
Is it about the order in which you do these?
@philbert Yes. The difference is really just if you are counting to yourself or if you are showing someone a number. With counting to yourself you also have the order of course in which you are counting. :D But yeah, it's complicated.
@noodydraws It's fascinating to see how other cultures count! If only because it's hard to imagine how people can do it differently at all
@philbert I think so too! I love stuff like that!

@noodydraws

Do I understand correctly that hitori = alone, futari = couple, and for the rest it's the usual counting words plus "nin" (person) ?

@noodydraws Oh my, that is unexpected complicated!😲
@noodydraws … and while in Aomori #Japan you can also visit the grave of Jesus Christ. Really. https://japantoday.com/category/features/opinions/jesus-christ-lived-in-aomori-really
Jesus Christ lived in Aomori - really?

An active conspiracy theory that rivals the revelations of "The Da Vinci Code" awaits visitors to the sleepy village of Shingo, between Hachinohe and Lake Towada in Aomori Prefecture. Every year in June, a ceremony unlike any other in Japan awakens Shingo (called “Herai” in times long ago) and women…

Japan Today

@noodydraws I’m so into this! Your art style, the info✨ I’m making a similar collection (of all the embarrassing things I’ve said and done while living in Japan) and it’s also been taking me forever—only 3 years tho, so you’ve got me beat 😅 I really hope to see more of your work!

Do you know Himawari House by Harmony Becker? It’s not a guide, but she does a really good job of blending languages and explaining culture along with a fantastic story.

@axazel Oh cool! Yeaaah, the things you realize after a while that you've got completely wrong are so embarassing, haha! I'm going to check your stuff out! And no, I didn't know that! thanks for the tip! Gotta look into it. :)

I actually didn't start with it in 2013, but still it's been a few years xD But I started studying Japanese back then, but forget faster than I can learn, so my Nihongo level is embarassingly low after 9 years, haha.

@noodydraws I could die of embarrassment just remembering it all🥹 But I think it’s better than being too scared to try!

Lemme know if you check it out and what you think 🌻

And yeah, learning Japanese is wild. If you ever want a kind of study buddy I’d be happy to chat 日本語でanytime~

@axazel Have you already posted it somewhere? Can't see it on your Masto timeline yet :)
@noodydraws I haven’t uploaded anything here yet! But I did share this page on #wanikani ⬇️ Honestly, I keep reworking it instead of posting… 😅
@axazel Oh that's adorable! and so well executed! I would love to read all of that!
@noodydraws That sounds awesome! Always wanted to visit Japan, would be a blast with your guide to help me find my way through all the nice things to see 😊.
@Fuchskind Danke!!
