Cool fact about Mastodon:

Not only can you block trolls, you can block entire servers and instances where trolls hang out.

Anyone can do this—not just moderators!

Whenever I share that tip about blocking servers/instances, some people get really angry 😉
@atomicpoet Help me out here...what's an instance in the context of Mastodon?
@carmencr It's where you live on Fediverse. For example, your instance is mastodon.cloud.
@atomicpoet HOW CAN YOU SUPPRESS FREE SPEECH LIKE THIS
@atomicpoet Not me! Trolls tend to congeal where they can find their own kind and acceptance. Being able to block their entire neighborhood is a real bonus here. That and the Edit Button.
@atomicpoet This makes me wish my anxiety was a server on Mastadon.
@atomicpoet nice! Thanks for that tip!
@atomicpoet i reported my first spammer today. Felt good knowing my report probably isn’t going into /dev/null
@atomicpoet how does one do this? Can I mute a whole server?
@cam @atomicpoet Click the three dots. Rest is visually self explanatory.
@atomicpoet How does blocking a server differ i in prescriber from blocking a Twitter user? I tried reading the explanation here but didn't write get it. I'm a newb, please help. :P
@prozzy @atomicpoet Blocking a server will block any accounts hosted there. So for example my account lives on writing.exchange. If you just hated book and didn't want to hear from a bunch of writers (maybe I was harassing you and getting my fellow writers to come bug you too) you could block writing.exchange and POOF none of us can see you anymore. (from accounts on that instance/server)
@revjorobertson @atomicpoet Thank you for the explanation, but I'm still a little confused about one thing. That applies as long as they aren't also on other servers where you come across them, correct?

@atomicpoet let's just hope the trolls aren't on the biggest instance of all, mastodon.social 😅

/me is pointing at @atomicpoet

@atomicpoet cool I’m not that smart tho haha
@atomicpoet but how do you find & join different servers? Or find people in different servers? Sorry, #mastadon newbie here.
@rileyharden You don't have to join different servers, just one.
@atomicpoet okay, so the one I chose when I created my account (without knowing what I was doing) is the one I’m stuck with?
@rileyharden No, you can choose another one. But you only need one.
@atomicpoet how do I choose another one?? Like the one you’re on?
@rileyharden Go to the website and sign up.
@atomicpoet do I lose everything on my account from this server when I switch?

@rileyharden No, you can migrate your account.

I don't do customer support, so you'll have to look at help docs to figure out how to do this.

@rileyharden @atomicpoet Hi Riley,

RTFM is the short answer. 😉

Please go check in your preferences and you'll find how to migrate your account to a new one.

There are also loads of support articles available on the internet explaining how to do it. Please take a minute of your valuable time to do a Google search.

@rileyharden you can use this wizard and then click advanced for additional granularity:
https://instances.social
@atomicpoet is blocking such a good thing? Sure block hate speech & people who threaten or intimidate. But blocking people who disagree? Bad idea. I like the Twitter Mute button. Let’s your amygdala settle but doesn’t allow you to block opposing views. We should all be more worried about groupthink than someone who offers strong challenge.
@ClaireJHartnell No one is entitled to my time or attention. If I like the features, I'll use it.
@atomicpoet well allow me to suggest that our insistence on only engaging with things which support our interests is exactly what has created polarisation & echo chambers & stops us from appreciating different perspectives? It is the heart of homophily & othering & dangerous for society.
@ClaireJHartnell I've heard these arguments, I've considered these arguments -- I'm still blocking troll instances.

@ClaireJHartnell @atomicpoet But you don’t have to block. It’s a choice.

Me, I choose not to engage with Nazis, Terfs, and other purveyors of hate. I have better tools to do that here.

@piersb @atomicpoet well Nazism is, by definition hate speech? As for Terfs, I engage quite a lot. I follow women who hold different views to me & I frequently get into strong exchanges. But I don’t want to cut myself off from those views. Some of these conversations are pretty helpful - eg when Margaret Atwood expressed her thoughts. This is exactly my point - listen, engage respectfully, look for common ground?
@atomicpoet grand tip. Being a totes newbie all tips are much appreciated. Ty
@atomicpoet are there many servers that are very toxic? Keen to know which ones to avoid like the plague!

@atomicpoet so if you're not happy with all the new users from Twitter messing up Mastodon culture, start one instance for all of them to join, then block it.
@atomicpoet damn that’s awesome! (I’m brand new here)
@atomicpoet thanks fir the info, I just got here

@atomicpoet

Handy to know Chris. Thanks for the tip!

@atomicpoet hey @Witchy_Minx once I find out how to do, I’ll share. Let me know if you find out b4 me! (Which is highly probable) 😋🤣

Good morn btw. (Wiping sleep from eyes).

@atomicpoet But also report the server to your mod team so others on your server can benefit :)
