Two things that are really important on here:

♿ Add text descriptions to your images/videos/audio. Accessibility is fundamental. More info: https://fedi.tips/mastodon-and-fediverse-accessibility-tips/#HowDoIMakePostsMoreAccessibleToBlindPeople

⚠️ Use Content Warnings on anything that people may not want to read right now. It could be upsetting like violence or politics, mild like movie spoilers, but either way it shows empathy and consideration for strangers. More info: https://fedi.tips/staying-safe-on-mastodon/#UsingContentWarnings

These features are key to keeping this place friendly. Please use them. 🙏 ❤️

@feditips And capitalize every word in a hashtag so that it's accessible for people with a screen reader, are dyslexic or just have a hard time distinguishing multiple words in a hashtag that is all lowercase!
@Nightworldlove @feditips guess I've never seen capitalized hashtags here...
@Nightworldlove @feditips is that still needed when the hashtag words are just single words?
@SMPress @Nightworldlove @feditips I think it's just so screen readers know how to break the hashtag up when reading it and don't do weird pronunciations.

@Nightworldlove @feditips

Capitalize the first letter in each word, as in #CamelCase ?

@Supertapani Yes, precisely! I forgot the exact word for it, apologies
@feditips A feature to display a warning before sending media without descriptions could be useful. Maybe based on per-instance admin settings.

There is one that will point out if you missed it, so you can delete-and-ReDraft. Follow this bot:

@PleaseCaption

@feditips lieve allemaal, willen jullie CW ook gebruiken bij de antwoorden op de vragen bij #2voor12? Ik neem het namelijk altijd op en kijk het later met J. Is zo sneu als ik alle antwoorden al weet.
@feditips as a European who's not that interested in American politics, I really appreciate it when people use CWs for that.
@alokir @feditips and for some of us Americans who are *exhausted* with politics at the moment it’s nice to be able to have a quiet place to read the news. I say this as someone who will continue to be bombarded until the runoff is over here in Georgia.
@feditips
Thank you! I hadn't figured out how to caption, and now I know. Screen reader tips are also great.

Mastodon and Fediverse Accessibility Tips | Fedi.Tips – An Unofficial Guide to Mastodon and the Fediverse

An unofficial guide to using Mastodon and the Fediverse

@feditips Using this on my iPhone—and not savvy yet, so going to ask forgiveness now—haven’t seen CW options—but will look before posting.
@feditips I am a musician. I’m trying not to annoy people with bombarding them with my content. Bear 🐻 with me as I flounder around in the darkness……
@feditips
As one of the newbies leaving Twitt... sorry - the 'Bird Site' - I recognise that there is an anti-conflict culture here on Mastodon.
And - as a linguist who has lived and worked in many other European countries - I *totally* understand how inappropriate it is to criticize the culture of your host.
But - for many of us - our timelines consist of nothing BUT 'Political Content'!
Which - if Content Warnings are strictly applied - means only about two tweets are displayed per page. 🤔
@feditips @philwaring - hopefully the rules will evolve as the population scales. The Fediverse seems well designed to support the broad consensus against abusive content, and to support communities that want quiet spaces that keep out unwelcome topics as well as other communities that encourage moderated, fact-based discussion of politics that directly impacts their rights, livelihoods, and even lives - without UI friction.
@feditips
Surely all it would need would be an 'Allow Political Content' option in the settings...?
So that those of us whose main interest is politics *don't* have to scroll through adverts.
@philwaring @feditips There is a setting to automatically un-hide posts behind content warnings.
@feditips is there a way to add the CW after the fact if we post something and them realize we should have used it?
@feditips Can add that after you posted?
@feditips "violence or politics" ?
A description of a beheading or discussing what your representative is saying in parliament, they don't seem equivalent to me.
@feditips if we put CW on a post or reply can we swear?
@2fbs @feditips no answer yet?
@colourpurplegal @feditips No... They're possibly busy 🤣
@2fbs @feditips busy restricting accounts for stupid reasons
@feditips Is it appropriate or necessary to CW when commenting on someone else's post?
@feditips I am new here so soaking up the tips. Content warnings are great but I can’t see how to add them to a post.

@feditips One of the things that keep surprising me (shame on me) is realising how difficult are some interactions with technology for many people. For me, it was sad to find out too late how descriptions could improve the user experience of blind people, how UI need to add additional visual feedback rather than only using colours as green or red (for color-blind people) and why optional subtitles need to be integrated in multimedia for the sake of comprehension.

Thanks for the reminder!

@febrezo @feditips yes—it can help to have a personal connection with people with disabilities. Since a friend of mine started to use a wheelchair, I notice a lot more often when sidewalks are not chair friendly. (I am also always moving those rental bikes that people leave in the middle of the sidewalk.)

@feditips Thanks for the tips. I appreciate this account (and others) for helping me learn the customs here.

Trying to be a good community member.

@feditips thanks!
I tried to post a video but was unable to today? Unsure what the issue was…is there a time/size limit?
@Omshadiddle @feditips we have a size limit ATM. I will increase it soon.
@feditips Question. Is there any way to add CW to a post I am boosting? Might be necessary if the CW policy on a server the post originated from us different than that on the server I am in
@beholderess @feditips I have the same question! I really want to boost posts but I mostly read political posts. Should I just ask the tooters to apply CWs?
@feditips thanks, this was really useful to read
@feditips @Just_Dave One thing I’ve found useful is that some apps like #Toot! provide an option to remind you to add #alttext before posting. Now, if it could do the same for #CWs, that would be super!
@feditips And never toot wordle results without CV. Those are a nightmare for screen readers.
Oh that's confusingly rendered. That was a retweet (or whatever it's called) from Mastodon, which wasn't really clear from the way it displayed.
@feditips I'm hoping content warnings end up being a solution to helping to manage climate doom on my timeline and when I engage with it
@feditips I find it helpful to also think of CW as Content Wrapper: a headline for readers to click on if interested, while speeding thru an increasingly busy timeline!
@feditips I've been here a week now, and it seems to me that for a lot of newcomers the word "warning" is an obstacle to using CWs sensibly—I'm seeing a lot of "I don't see why my news stories need CWs, since they're what people follow me for and it's just ordinary news stuff" rather than "Hey, here's a handy 'show more' feature I can use so people just see the headline!"

@EcolJim @scitjc @pj_saez RE your recent introduction. Please see the above toot from feditips about aligning your toots better with the Fediverse. We all make mistakes so it's not a crisis, but we all have to work to make this network the a place where folks feel safe and welcome. This is especially important if you see this as a place for networking or scicomm.

Welcome to the fediverse! 👋
