Dear famous people (50,000+ followers?) moving over to Mastodon,

Once you've chosen a server, please email the admin before joining, to give them a chance to bolster the server! If you don't, the people from Twitter following you there will probably break it.

Thank you! πŸ’š

This reminds me of an article I saw on the Guardian website or similar, about/by a famous food critic, where people didn't know what he looked like so he'd go to a restaurant and eat there and if it was REALLY GOOD he'd have to go and give the manager a heads-up, because he was about to write a positive article about his restaurant and he was quite famous and influential, so the manager would need to hire a lot more staff by a deadline, and the restaurant would be absolutely swamped.
@cassolotl can I share this to Twitter so that perhaps it can gain traction and they know before they come over? I can remove your name or just copy and paste the message if that makes a difference

@cassolotl Also consider donating to the server upkeep, and suggesting your followers do the same
@oblomov Yeah definitely, I like to hope that once a celebrity emails the server admin the server admin will be like "okay so this is going to increase the cost of running the server by Β£x and I'll need to hire some extra moderators," and maybe if they can't afford it they'd say so and the celebrity can choose another server, or offer to contribute to running costs, etc.
@oblomov @cassolotl what is considered good manners for this? Pitch in $??/month?

@jblxdesign

I've heard that $8/month is a frequent choice, to spite and troll Elon.

@cassolotl

@cassolotl The problem is that people will only read this after they've joined.
@ainmosni I actually originally posted it on Twitter and it got cross-posted to here and went viral here. :D On Twitter it has like 5 RTs, but you never know - maybe the next Stephen Fry will see it...!
@cassolotl they should hire admins and set up servers to be personal fandoms :)
@sarahlefton Yes, that would be ideal in the long-run! But I don't think we can expect individuals to make that kind of investment before they've actually tried out the network and decided whether they like it, and I can't begrudge people who are so new that they don't realise that the server will go down as soon as they tweet that they've set up an account. :D So, this is the best option for famous noobs I think?
@cassolotl
Or, even, create your own instance. πŸ˜‰

@cassolotl and don't just give the head's up...start making serious support to the cost of the server and moderation.

@cassolotl I do not understand? Which server do I email?
@ginafme Email the admin of whichever server you are considering joining. So like, if you're considering joining mastodon.social, you can find the admin's email address on https://mastodon.social/about, which is the page you see before you sign in/sign up.
@cassolotl so your just interested in attracting famous people?
