@mollyjongfast

> We are trapped in a Möbius strip of narcissistic autocrat.

we resemble this picture and I don't like it.

@mollyjongfast I wish reporters would link to the racist tweets because I've never seen them to this point. I've seen them in other platforms but not Twitter.

Do more than try #mastodon. Make mastodon your mission. Don't just be a user. Be a mastodon instance/server. You lead the way & build the world you want to see so your peers can follow. There are too many victims in society today. Let's see you you can be a hero.

(I get that I'm not perfect & you probably won't agree with anything that I believe in & you may use that as an excuse to ignore me but don't. Do yourself a huge favor & be the best you, you can be)

@mollyjongfast I get the feeling that the boards of his other companies are watching him closely and when he really is vulnerable and melting down - they will toss him out the door. Tesla stock would be a canary in the coal mine, I suppose. His post encouraging folks to vote for the GOP today was very telling, he wants to be a big shot but Twitter is something he wont be able to control. Also notice how he flip flops when posting...he aint all there~

@mollyjongfast I know it's already been mentioned, but I love this quote:

"Watching Musk melt down feels like watching Kanye West melt down feels like watching Trump melt down. We are trapped in a Möbius strip of narcissistic autocrat."

@mollyjongfast Nice piece! The current influx of journalists has added something to my Mastodon feed that I've missed since I left Twitter a few months ago. I hope you and the others will stay and make this the kind of public square those of us who aren't billionaires need and deserve.

@mollyjongfast
“like an online Ikea kit with the special wrenches missing” 😹

Brilliant

@mollyjongfast "Writers without readers cease to exist."
I wouldn't have heard about and read this article if it weren't posted here. I suppose you need to post as many places as possible to get the word out.
The part about Musk laughing about Greenwald harassing you is one more reason why I don't read Twitter.
@mollyjongfast SO glad to have found you (and your terrific writing) here after the #migration
@mollyjongfast Twitter is no longer a good source of information. The owner shamelessly asked his minions to vote Republican. You are basically using Fox News the social network now.
@mollyjongfast excellent piece as always.
@mollyjongfast I like the number of phrases in there, starting with autocrat Mobius strip. Thanks!
@mollyjongfast I see you have 19k followers already here. Did you get followers that quickly on twitter? I think as soon as many accounts with LARGE followings fully commit this platform. . . It will explode. . .
@mollyjongfast I suspect that when journalists and other high follower accounts don't get the follows and critical mass that they require they will abandon Mastodon as quickly as they flocked to it, unfortunately. I really hope I'm wrong because there's no chance I will be going back to Musk-Saudi owned Twitter.

@mollyjongfast
Should I have asked you first?

What a great piece in Vanity Fair. I howled at this quote from Vanity Fair Magazine article by by MollyJongfast
“Watching Musk melt down feels like watching Kanye West melt down feels like watching Trump melt down. We are trapped in a Möbius strip of narcissistic autocrat.”
The entire article is perfect & dead on.

My favorite! @mollyjongfast

@mollyjongfast About your article: I like one of your reasons of not leaving yet Twitter… to expose Horrible, Despicable people politicians mainly and some celebrities. I guess nobody was planning to leave twitter a few months ago so now we’ll need to be in both places for a while until we find out who is really leaving twitter or until Elon gets another fit and ban us all...

@mollyjongfast I'm... not optimistic. Still there, though.

TIL on 1/7 (yes, the day after the insurrection) he did 2 things:

1. he tweeted "Use Signal". This tweet is still up.

2.He donated $495 to GOP via winred (his other donations are maxed out, and 495 is the capital beltway). On the form, he put "SPECIAL AGENT" for his job title. This was written up in Business Insider.

@mollyjongfast did everyone else already know this?

I feel like that can't be possible.

And yet, there's no way "jack" didn't know. RIGHT?

@mollyjongfast
Loved the touchpoints of the Elle article.🙏
@mollyjongfast l wish that journalists would embrace the use of CW tags. It serves as a fetchy headline, and we can opt in or out. And it also means larger reach within the fediverse.
@mollyjongfast because, as a Dane, l often am not interested in American drama. Only occasionally 😊
@jacmoe @mollyjongfast I suspect we will have to mute or block.
@fogelnet @mollyjongfast yes, sadly. Or perhaps, some day, we will be able to apply a CW filter to profiles or instances?
@mollyjongfast fantastic article, I never really got on with twitter it seemed too hard and I got on it too late. There's only so much Stephen Fry / Elon Musk and bad adverts you can take. Mastodon seems like a calmer place, more spa day than Ikea hell.
@mollyjongfast
Great article. I have no public persona as do you, but I like the ability to make my points on Twitter. Like you I'm distressed at what's happening to Twitter, and looking for a new platform. Maybe Mastodon is it. Maybe it will be Bluesky.
@mollyjongfast Fine article.
It feels to a lot of us that Musk wants us to pay him $8/ month to be trained monkeys in his private circus. If he’d just shaddup, like Bezos, this would all be a lot easier to take, but Musk just cannot keep quiet. I hope he learns. Or, if not, that this site can take all the folks Twitter hemmorhages.

@mollyjongfast

Excellent piece Molly. I'll be peppering my speech with Möbius strips all day tomorrow.

@mollyjongfast I ditched it & him. Life's too short for that foolishness.
@mollyjongfast why this dichotomy? Use both, in fact use twitter to make mastodon community stronger!
@mollyjongfast you absolutely nailed it!, about him, about the best yoga pants cozy feel of Twitter even for all its faults. I’m staying too but not paying to keep my check
@mollyjongfast great article! I’m still a little confused about Mastodon. I’ve also been using Counter.Social since April.That one also took me a minute to sort out, but I like it. As far as I can tell it has more features than Mastodon.
@mollyjongfast A good article—honest and relatable. I hope we all get the hang of Mastodon & come to love it. I’ve enjoyed the feeling of community in my few days here, but I didn’t use Twitter all that much and can’t compare the two. Still the only time I’ve felt this sense of community with people around the world was when playing an MMORPG called Torn. There, we worked together and celebrated one another’s successes in ways I hadn’t experienced before. Right now Mastodon feels the same.

@mollyjongfast @taylorlorenz

“The need to connect with my readers will keep me on the platform until something better comes along. I have no choice.”

At what point would this be not true?

The CEO is amplifying conspiracy theories and retweeting Nazis.

@mollyjongfast exactly this. I’m turning my twitter into a glorified newsfeed and saving all my interactions for here.
@mollyjongfast great write up! You’ve got a new follower.
@mollyjongfast what a fantastic article as it reflects my own feelings with regards to Twitter. If I had wrote something similar, your article would be considered a thousand times better. Appreciate your work.
@mollyjongfast good to have you here Molly. I hope more journalists and others find Mastadon's federatedness a strong rationale for rebuilding here to try to break out of the singular control of other social media. I also remember Twitter being hard to grok and difficult to use for many users for the longest time.
@mollyjongfast I’m glad to see that the article you linked to was not paywalled. Thank you #vanityfair
@mollyjongfast love use of ‘Muskian fashion’. Both United Kingdom and and Musk placed brown person in charge alluding to non racist credentials. Expect the underbelly mother of all abuses by bigots racist rascals. But (Mr Musk) we have Brown leaders!!
@mollyjongfast I imagine a bunch of us will be hanging out here until and if the dust settles over at Twitter. Been then again, now’s there’s talk about a possible paywall, blue checkmark or not. Possibly with limited time allowed and paid subscription to continue browsing. That’s gonna go over like a lead balloon.
@mollyjongfast astute piece Molly - spot on for me. (And uh, the Ikea analogy is perfection.)
@mollyjongfast tbc Musk has been far right for some time. He’s clearly lisiasing with them now trying to prove what a great cunning funny guy he is. Talk of ‘independence’ is done with a nod and a wink to them, an amusing far right ruse, the likes of which Tim Pool has done for years…
@mollyjongfast I would have a real problem giving Musk any of my money to retain a blue tick tbh… and don’t get me started on Liberals buying Tesla’s….
@mollyjongfast an excellent reflection on the value of Twitter.
@mollyjongfast This is a great piece, Molly. There are people I cannot give up on - still on Twitter. Migrating here to check out my ability to build IKEA furniture.
@mollyjongfast We spoke about 'the Chief Twit' in episode 4 of The High Hopes Podcast 🎙️Looking forward to reading your thoughts.
@mollyjongfast “I am not enjoying watching Musk break his new plaything, but I will stay on Twitter until there’s a real alternative. I’m testing out Mastodon, which is confusing, sort of like an online Ikea kit with the special wrenches missing.” - Perfect! Same impression so far.
@mollyjongfast  "We are trapped in a Möbius strip of narcissistic autocrat."
@mollyjongfast My wife mocked me when I subscribed to Vanity Fair a couple of years ago, but I did so because the political writing was really good. was glad to have the subscription when I learned you had moved to VF from The Atlantic. On Mastodon, I think I’m here to stay. Once one figures it out, it’s good and increasingly I can follow folks whom I followed on Twitter, and more. I loved Twitter for developing news and witty contributors, but this place is better on my nerves!
@mollyjongfast I laughed so hard at “I’m testing out Mastodon, which is confusing, sort of like an online Ikea kit with the special wrenches missing.” This is how I felt last evening as I was putting my profile together. I think my Mastodon chair has at least three solid legs bit there could still be an unexplained wobble . 😂
@mollyjongfast Ikea is a good comparison. I was going to post a gif of the scene from Zoolander with the computer to illustrate my experience thus far with Mastodon, but I’m not sure it does gifs and a frozen frame would just be sad.
