Gen X learns a new media platform.
@RadioFreeWinter Bugger Gen X, I'm a baby boomer #geek and #gamer who's loving Mastodon ๐Ÿ˜‚
@RadioFreeWinter ouch, that hurt a little, when did we get that old?
@RadioFreeWinter Super cool to not get dog-piled by Uruk-hai while you learn, at least.
@RadioFreeWinter tbf we've been doing it our whole adult lives so in a way it feels normal ....
Thatโ€™s definitely me
@RadioFreeWinter literally me. I even have that hair do

@RadioFreeWinter

Hey! I resemble that remark!

@RadioFreeWinter This was how I, an elder millennial, felt when TikTok came out
@markhenick @RadioFreeWinter same! (Xennial / "oregon trail" gen here). now i enjoy watching tiktoks, but not posting them (yet)

@RadioFreeWinter

Uhhhh. No. This isn't new at all. It's exactly like the internet we knew BEFORE Facebook and Twitter.

Most of the people I know who can't figure this out are younger than me. :)

@JenWojcik @RadioFreeWinter This this this this this.

Reminds me of usenet or IRC, just with a modern(ish) interface and moderation tools.

I am, as Gretchen McCulloch's brilliant book "Because Internet" put it, an Old Internet Person and I can feel the deep learning of us OIPs in the design of this place.

@po8crg @RadioFreeWinter

That's because that's EXACTLY what it is. Used IRC like crazy back in the day. Same thing. :)

@JenWojcik This is the wonderful passage from McCulloch's book that describes who we OIPs are

@po8crg

Yes sir. Was right there in the middle of all of that. LOVED usenet.

That's why all of this is so friggin funny to us Olds.

Everything old is new again. Circle of life. It has all happened before and will all happen again. :)

@JenWojcik Absolutely. And I *like* this place because it feels like what went before the giant social media companies tried to eat the internet. Feels like where we might have ended up in 2010 if Twitter had never happened.

@po8crg

EXACTLY. I mean, I'm staying on Twitter until it dies. I was there in the beginning, and will be there when it's buried. Was a huge part of my life.

But you're right and it's almost a cosmic shift for it to return to the original federation of the internet. I love it.

@JenWojcik Welcome home.

I think that's all there is to say at this point.

@po8crg

Same to you, sir. :)

@JenWojcik @po8crg Totally!
I get constant flashbacks to the mid- to late 90s. Frontier-y feelings all along! Getting the urge to revisit some MUDs and pay the equivalent of 5 โ‚ฌ/20min in a local net cafe.
It's like ... there - And back again.
@RadioFreeWinter as an elder millennial I relate to this more than I'd like to admit
@RadioFreeWinter why new? Gen X feels right at home. Mastodon totally feels like 1999 again. Forum-hopping at it's best. Getting permanent flashbacks to simpler, more frontier-y times.
@RadioFreeWinter my beard is not that bloody longโ€ฆI do have a MacBook tho but damnit that is not the point..
@RadioFreeWinter God, ainโ€™t it just the truth though!
@RadioFreeWinter well in fairness it was us #genx that invented most of these platforms and the networks they live on!
@RadioFreeWinter This is 100% how it feels but I'm totally up for it. Oh and I have a 20 year old son who I can call for back up. ;-)
@RadioFreeWinter Ouch. Take the like, but ouch.
@RadioFreeWinter Great. Now Iโ€™m on Candid Camera.
@RadioFreeWinter um. Didnโ€™t we invent it? Or have we got such dementia that we just think we did?
@RadioFreeWinter Gen Xers invented social media. ;) I was connecting with like minded peers across the world through IRC and MUDS before the internet had graphics beyond ASCII art
@RadioFreeWinter this is me playing with containers
@RadioFreeWinter I definitely feel this vibe right now
@RadioFreeWinter LoL. Mean, funny as hell but mean๐Ÿ˜œ
@RadioFreeWinter Gen X also grew up with BBSes, Compuserve forums and Usenet. I think we'll be fine.

@RadioFreeWinter

Hmmm. You realise Gen X pretty much INVENTED such platforms??

I mean, yes, I do look like an elderly wizard, right down to the facial hair, but I'm the one who installs new software and hardware, fixes bricked phones and BSDs, knows all the apps.

We're not weird old fogeys who can't with-it. This shit is my generation's pyramid - it's the later generations that can't figure out how/why it works/exists. WE built this, the latchkey kids, figuring shit out on the fly.
