Gen X learns a new media platform.

@RadioFreeWinter

Uhhhh. No. This isn't new at all. It's exactly like the internet we knew BEFORE Facebook and Twitter.

Most of the people I know who can't figure this out are younger than me. :)

@JenWojcik @RadioFreeWinter This this this this this.

Reminds me of usenet or IRC, just with a modern(ish) interface and moderation tools.

I am, as Gretchen McCulloch's brilliant book "Because Internet" put it, an Old Internet Person and I can feel the deep learning of us OIPs in the design of this place.

@po8crg @RadioFreeWinter

That's because that's EXACTLY what it is. Used IRC like crazy back in the day. Same thing. :)

@JenWojcik This is the wonderful passage from McCulloch's book that describes who we OIPs are

@po8crg

Yes sir. Was right there in the middle of all of that. LOVED usenet.

That's why all of this is so friggin funny to us Olds.

Everything old is new again. Circle of life. It has all happened before and will all happen again. :)

@JenWojcik Absolutely. And I *like* this place because it feels like what went before the giant social media companies tried to eat the internet. Feels like where we might have ended up in 2010 if Twitter had never happened.

@po8crg

EXACTLY. I mean, I'm staying on Twitter until it dies. I was there in the beginning, and will be there when it's buried. Was a huge part of my life.

But you're right and it's almost a cosmic shift for it to return to the original federation of the internet. I love it.

@JenWojcik Welcome home.

I think that's all there is to say at this point.

@po8crg

Same to you, sir. :)

@JenWojcik @po8crg Totally!
I get constant flashbacks to the mid- to late 90s. Frontier-y feelings all along! Getting the urge to revisit some MUDs and pay the equivalent of 5 €/20min in a local net cafe.
It's like ... there - And back again.
