Do you have a WordPress blog?

You can turn it into a Fediverse server using a simple plug-in. This means that people on Mastodon can follow it just like they follow any account on here.

Here's more info about how to do it:

https://fedi.tips/the-fediverse-beyond-mastodon/#WordPress

(NOTE: This doesn't work on free blogs hosted by wordpress.com)

The plugin is totally free. If you appreciate the plugin, remember to send its maker @pfefferle some donations at https://notiz.blog/donate

The Fediverse beyond Mastodon | Fedi.Tips โ€“ An Unofficial Guide to Mastodon and the Fediverse

An unofficial guide to using Mastodon and the Fediverse

@feditips @pfefferle when you go to the url will it still show your blog or will it show mastodon?
@maxwell @feditips @pfefferle there will be a short toot on the profile with link directly to your WordPress blog. Se an example on @andreas where I have done it with my blog IT-blogger.dk

@maxwell @feditips @pfefferle it just adds ActivityPub protocol to the blog, it doesn't make it a Mastodon server.

ActivityPub is the protocol Mastodon uses to do the social media thing with your microblog posts, otherwise it would just be a site where you post to yourself.

So your articles will show up in followers' feeds, can be boosted and shared, replies could show as comments on the article depending on how the plugin works, etc.

That's the thing, the backend of Mastodon functionally can *replace* getting people to sign up for your blog email list or RSS feed or Disqus widget! Same for your art gallery, video channel, music cloud, etc.

@feditips @pfefferle finally got this working for this past weekend! Excellent plug-in.
@feditips @pfefferle Just installed on ClassicPress, but I don't think it's a good idea to post the whole blog article to the Fediverse, so I configured it to post only title, link, and hashtags.
@feditips @pfefferle Is there a way to do this that can be tied to say my current account here, even though the blog is on a different domain?
@zolon @feditips @pfefferle I think most Mastodon servers support migrating an account to a new address so that it redirects and your followers come along for the ride. I have yet to try it though.
@mjgardner I understand how that works. I currently run 3 instances. I just didn't want to stand up another by installing the plugin.
@zolon @mjgardner but beware, the WordPress plugin is not yet a full flavored ActivityPub server! At the moment only others can follow your blog, but you can not follow someone using your blog.
@pfefferle @zolon Do you have any suggestions for a way to follow others and respond to them so that the responses come from your blog's identity?
@mjgardner @zolon it should work soon. Alex Kirk is working on a joint venture with another plugin https://github.com/pfefferle/wordpress-activitypub/pull/172
Add a parser to the Friends Plugin by akirk ยท Pull Request #172 ยท pfefferle/wordpress-activitypub

With this patch your WordPress can not only be followed on ActivityPub platforms (like Mastodon) but you can also follow people on those platforms, with the plan eliminating the need for having ano...

@feditips @pfefferle This is genius! Perfect for our Wordpress blog. Thanks much for the tip!
@feditips oh WOW   this looks like something I need to set up. Thanks for this tip! @pfefferle

@feditips @pfefferle

Thank you! This is awesome. I'm going to do this. I'm pulling MojoWriter.com down from Tumblr, putting it back on my WordPress server, importing the Tumblr stuff into it, and then am going to connect it to the Fediverse. ๐Ÿ˜„

@feditips @pfefferle that sounds really cool. Going to give it a go

@feditips got it working yesterday morning but I needed to install his WebFinger plugin too, and if it's a multisite, you need to activate both plugins on each blog.

The docs for configuring it aren't very good unfortunately.

Being a blogger, of course I wrote a blog post about it, which you can find at my blog's Mastodon address of @[email protected] or on the boring old web at https://odd.blog/2022/11/06/how-to-add-your-blog-to-mastodon/ :)

@donncha @feditips @[email protected] This is awesome, game changer!

Thanks for sharing the specifics.I looked at doing this a while ago but got stuck.

What's the role of the Web Finger plugin?

@ScruffyDux @feditips @[email protected] I think it's to tell the network what resources are at @[email protected] - it creates a url in /.well-known/ that returns a json encoded lump of data. There's no need to manually create that directory, it's a dynamic one using wp-rewrite.

The last post in this support thread is how I figured out I needed WebFinger.

Author / blog not showing on Mastodon

Hello! Iโ€™ve tried to view my blog on Mastodon. INstalled your plugin, everything was fine. User page shows a โ€œ@[email protected].โ€ฆ

WordPress.org Forums
@donncha @feditips @[email protected] Thanks for this. I was trying to get this to work over the weekend but didn't see anything in my Google searches about WebFinger. I'll give that a try.
@feditips @pfefferle Hell yeah thx! Working on something that needs this rn.
@feditips As She Who Reviews many Plugins, I confirm that @pfefferle did in fact write the best of the fediverse ones I've seen.
@feditips @pfefferle Woah, this looks pretty cool. It'll certainly make it easier for folks to spin up a WP install versus a dedicated server.

@feditips @pfefferle

@scalzi Have you seen this? Whatever can be here too.

@feditips @[email protected] Well heck yeah. My blog is in the Fediverse now.

@feditips @pfefferle

This looks really cool, but I get an odd "422 Mastodon Length Validation Error" when I try to search for what should be the result (@dave @wist.info -- it seems to throw the error if I actually type out the handle). ๐Ÿ˜ž

@pfefferle @feditips - I use the plug-in โ€œshare on mastodonโ€. I use a WordPress site through a hosting service (BlueHost). I donโ€™t know if this would be considered a free site.
@feditips @pfefferle This is pretty cool! Iโ€™m going to have to dig Into this.

@feditips @pfefferle

Can you think of a way to do this on a blog written in Django (not Wordpress) deployed to a Linux server and on my own domain?

@feditips @pfefferle

Hey, this looks pretty cool. You all could follow KB6NU.Com here on Mastodon.

@feditips @pfefferle do you have to pay for the plugin or is the plugin hosted on a already paid server?

@whyamihere @pfefferle

The plug-in is absolutely free, that's why I included the author's donation link!

You have to pay the hosting costs and domain name of your blog. But if you run an independently hosted blog you would be paying that anyway. There's no extra cost for this plug-in.

@feditips @whyamihere @pfefferle Thanks for this thread. My understanding and possibility horizons just got a whole lot bigger!
