Honestly, given the extent of violence that Twitter now embodies, I can't help but feel like the same bright line applies to criticisms of the fediverse that implicitly set up Twitter as the alternative.

Twitter is gone in every way that matters. Criticize the fediverse all you want — it needs to be criticized and made stronger for it — but don't act like Twitter still exists as a viable alternative.

When Is a Bird a ‘Birb’? An Extremely Important Guide

The internet meme has been around for seven years now, so it's high time we establish some ground rules.

Incidentally, if you're a plane nerd and have a spare Pi kicking around and don't mind spending fifty quid or so on bits and pieces, it's well worth building your own ADBS receiver. Little weekend project, and you can feed your data to a number of services. If you feed to FlightRadar24, they'll give you a free business account, which is otherwise 500 bucks a year. https://www.flightradar24.com/build-your-own

It’s important, if you can, to give the new folks a little bit of grace

They’re coming from the most toxic place on earth, a carefully perfected hate engine

They’re expecting everyone to be horrible to them, for many, that’s all they’ve ever known of online interaction. They’re expecting to be manipulated, dogpiled, and abused.

Some folks will slip into their new place and fit right in, others might be a little feral at first

I’m not saying to ignore abuse or bad behavior, I’m just saying, WE can do a lot to show folks how this place works and what we expect from each other

And remember, they’re coming up from the bottom of a cold crushing sea

There’s a lot of nitrogen still dissolved in their blood, and they might need some time to decompress

Whenever I'm tempted to think that a new thing seems too complicated, I read newspaper articles about pizza from the early 1950s.
Without any binding commitments to rapidly and immediately reduce greenhouse gases, the world stands no chance to deliver on the 1,5°C limit, and by doing so minimising risks of uprooting the life supporting systems we all depend on and endangering countless human lives.
