BREAKING NEWS: In what I believe is the most widespread election monitoring effort it has ever undertaken, the DOJ Civil Rights Division just announced that it will have officials in the field monitoring the polls in 24 STATES on Election Day. This is huge. This is the DOJ being true to its mission. You can find the list of jurisdictions that will be monitored here:

Justice Department to Monitor Polls in 24 States for Compliance with Federal Voting Rights Laws

The Justice Department announced today its plans to monitor compliance with federal voting rights laws in 64 jurisdictions in 24 states for the Nov. 8, 2022 general election.

@ifilljustice Absolutely needed especially given the efforts by extremists to stand up nationwide (and often armed) poll "watchers."

@ifilljustice
I just skimmed through the list and am kind of surprised at places that AREN'T on there. Nothing in Mississippi. Nothing in Alabama. Nothing in Louisiana. Three counties in all of Texas.

EIGHT locations in Massachusetts.

I'm entirely confused by what the goal is here.

@ifilljustice
Glad to see my county-- Yavapai, AZ-- is on the list. A big welcome to the DOJ from me! Stop by for a coffee anytime. 😉
@ifilljustice Awesome! I hate that it's necessary but thankful for DOJ support.
@ifilljustice I cringe to imagine how the MAGAs will spin this...
@ifilljustice i’m so happy to see Milwaukee and Racine Wisconsin are on the list. This election is so important for our state.
@ifilljustice that is wonderful to hear. I'm expecting we will see some pretty baldfaced attempts to stop the vote tomorrow. We need impartial eyes on every polling place possible.
@ifilljustice Good news. The world is watching.
@ifilljustice - I don't think it will make much of a difference - I just listened to a report on Australian radio that retold that it took 5 hours in one instance and 9 hours in another just to vote - that's not democracy.
@ifilljustice All three southeast Florida counties are on the list. That's very good because they're the ones most likely to experience some shenanigans.
@ifilljustice Good news, but considering that some of these states started voting like two weeks ago and there has already been enough problems and enough time for courts to intervene and issue orders to try to keep armed intimidators away from the polls it seems a bit late...
@ifilljustice: Hopefully this means they will tell the masked / armed / morons playing dress up to vote or go home. Voters don't need that type of intimidation at the polls.

@ifilljustice

Wow. Things are getting real over there.

@ifilljustice I like that they announced it at the last minute. The fascists won’t have time to organize against it.
@ifilljustice Huge. I do wonder why states like Mississippi aren't included, though, aside from not being swing states.

@ashton @ifilljustice

maybe they’re landing at Normandy instead ;)

@ifilljustice @ashton Is it likely DOJ, with its poll monitoring, is looking for those areas that are more likely to become flashpoints simply b/c they are swing states with significant potential to alter the balance of power? High stakes locations seems to be the focus.
@ifilljustice I appreciate hearing this!! Also, I am learning that people are very liberal here with content warnings, and that not everyone wants to see politics/civics/government stuff unfiltered in their timeline. Might want to do a CW on this sort of post next time (and I believe you can enable content earnings by default on your account if this is mostly what you post). Glad you’re here. 🖤
@ifilljustice Fantastic! I hope the college-age voters turn out.

@ifilljustice Hopefully they'll be keeping an eye on things in Montgomery, Alabama. Hoping tommorow is peaceful here in town, but there are a lot of MAGAs sadly.
@ifilljustice Thanks for posting this. Glad you’re on here.
@ifilljustice good news indeed. Lets all Vote, and then lets count all the votes. Lets have an election.💙

@ifilljustice .

Thank you!! I was hoping for this!! Woohoo!!

@ifilljustice thank you for sharing this!
@ifilljustice sure wish they would come enjoy the random ppl that park out at the big polling place leering and waving “God know how you vote” signs in faces. It’s not intimidation, but… it’s so…

@ifilljustice
Sounds like DOJ is hurling a sharp rebuke of the #SCOTUS Shelby County v. Holder decision of 2013. (Looking at you Justices Roberts, Thomas & Alito.)

But we must stop the conservative bench from rolling back any more civil rights & personal freedoms by empowering authoritarians. Moore v. Harper looms.

@ifilljustice Thankfully that includes Philly and its suburbs, where deniers are already active
@ifilljustice
I live in the city of Fitchburg. Also very familiar with Leominster and Clinton. I have nothing to contribute to any reasons for inclusions, but I’m curious about the the rationale. Surprised to see Massachusetts.
@ifilljustice Here in Clark County, Nevada, as a child, election day just meant that we couldn't eat in the lunchroom for the day. As an adult who works with children outside the school setting, it seems really ominous that they now give kids the day off (in the middle of the week, mind you) and probably due to the fact that there could be potential violence. Thank goodness, we're on the list.
@ifilljustice 21st century America. 🤦‍♂️
@ifilljustice Only three counties are listed in Texas, out of 254? That's pretty threadbare coverage, it seems. But better than nothing ... 🙂
