A global study reveals that Dutch residents are the most physically active on earth, getting 12.8 hours of exercise each week. The key—designing activity into daily life. The average #Dutch person cycles about 1,098 kilometers per year. https://www.ipsos.com/en/global-views-to-sports-2021 #cityplanning #bikes #mobility #transportation #healthycities #urbanplanning #cities
@BrentToderian it’s funny that exercise is an industry when it could just be part of the built infrastructure.
@BrentToderian healthier people and better-looking cities. What’s not to like?
@BrentToderian I'm too lazy to do exercise as an extra activity so having walking and biking as part of my day to day life keeps me healthy. It also means others can enjoy clean air and quieter environments.
@BrentToderian Both inspiring and intimidating to this couch potato.
@BrentToderian we are creating a new campus in #Cheltenham called the #Goldenvalleydevelopment which will provide the best of urban and rural placemaking in the UK. We have a lot to learn from the Netherlands clearly:-)
@BrentToderian if I could migrate, I would do so tomorrow
@BrentToderian The question is, of course, whether people cycle because they prefer or because there is no other way to get where they need to be. #buurtbus
@BrentToderian they must be wrong. Yes, cycling is the most popular means of transportation in NL, but more than half of the new bikes sold in this country are e-bikes.

@Tomasso @BrentToderian

I suspect most of those are pedal assist. I think it’s been shown pedelecs encourage more cycle use, so even though pedalling is assisted at lower speeds, distances and hours used are greater. It encourages use instead of the car over that critical 5 mile/8km local journey. So people are getting some physical exercise at lower level instead of just sitting in a car.

@BrentToderian @shippers I’m not sure about the net effect. If young people replace their traditional bike for a pedal assist, they get less exercise..
@Tomasso @BrentToderian e-bikers get more exercise than you may think. Still have to pedal them, normally.
@mjr @BrentToderian I have ridden on e-biikes and they require a lot less effort.

@BrentToderian

One of the unexpected benefits of being #CarFree is that exercise is built into my day, instead of having to plan to do it.

I enjoy getting around, so the exercise is enjoyable, not a necessary evil.

@BrentToderian

The key is having a flat country.

@Claireq @BrentToderian A widespread fallacy. The key is infrastructure.
@Claireq @BrentToderian not much less cycling in Dutch #Limburg and that is seriously not flat in places
@BrentToderian
Is it possible that the Dutch being the tallest people is related to exertion? I meàn perhaps optimal exercise during growth years could stimulate the expression of tallness genes. (Not meaning to imply that taller is better, naturally)
