Mastodon v4.0 has a really nifty edit feature!

Here's how to use it.

1. When you click the ellipsis icon (...), you'll see an option for edit
2. After clicking "Edit", you'll be able to adjust the original message in the Compose box. NOTE: this does not delete the original message
3. In your feed, you can see which messages have been edited by a star on the upper right corner next to the time it was sent
4. You can also view logs of edits by clicking the โ–ผ icon underneath the message.

As you all can probably tell from comments, I just used the "edit" feature on the original post to clarify that this feature isn't available to all instances.

So there you go, the edit feature sure is useful ๐Ÿ˜…

@atomicpoet Interesting, the instance I'm on has a version that predates even 3.5, so I only see the original post. I have to open your thread in its own instance to see it.
@oblomov That sucks. Hopefully other instances get this update soon.
@atomicpoet I only see "Delete & Re-draft in my instance, using the web view. Is this not a universal feature across Mastodon?
@killyourfm It's available for v4.0. It looks like you're on v3.5.3.
@atomicpoet Well that's a logical explanation!

@killyourfm @atomicpoet

Another new v4.0 feature I'm looking forward to (when I get it) is the ability to follow hashtags.

@killyourfm @atomicpoet

The v4.0 feature list also shows the Admin can view toot edits as well. So if someone abuses someone else then edits out the offending text, they're not going to get away with it :)

@mackaj @atomicpoet Yes! That will significantly reduce the width of my web interface

@atomicpoet I think you're getting a mastodon.social preview of something the rest of us (still) on 3.5.3 or lower don't have yet.

You probably know that. I just want to spare your followers any confusion.

@atomicpoet That feature was enabled (made visible) in Mastodon 4.0.0rc1: https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/pull/19103

@atomicpoet Dang! just what I needed!
@atomicpoet so does each server need to install an update for this to happen? I don't see an edit feature on my posts, but I'm not on mastodon.social.
@jp Yeah, needs an update to v4.0.
@atomicpoet so where is the checkout page for this 8 bucks feature? ๐Ÿ˜‚ /s
@atomicpoet I don't have those 3 dots. Do I need to download something to get 4.0?
@sloopyy You're on the iOS app. To access that feature, you need to visit the web app.
@atomicpoet I have the three dots, but my only options are "Delete" and "Delete & re-draft." Are features different on different instances?
@aktange @atomicpoet yes, it depends if your instance has the latest version of the software on it. If not, it will come soon๐Ÿ˜€
@lps @atomicpoet aaahh! Good to know. Thank you. Will keep my eyes peeled.

@atomicpoet Thank you for the information on editing!

The instance I'm on is at 4.0. I tried to edit a post to change the visibility from Public to Unlisted, but didn't succeed. Did I miss something, or is that impossible?

@jimrhiz No, don't think that's possible through an edit. If that's a problem, I suggest "Delete & re-draft".
@atomicpoet how much do we have to pay Elon Musk to edit posts? ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿคฃ
@atomicpoet This is an edit function designed by someone who has used version control systems

@atomicpoet

One day, clicking the ๐Ÿ”ฝ button in an edited post will produce output in unified diff format. ๐Ÿ™ƒ

#programming #unix #diff #mastodon

@atomicpoet Finally, the edit button weโ€™ve all been waiting for!
@atomicpoet ๐Ÿคฏ I think Iโ€™m in love
@atomicpoet Iโ€™m trying to sign in on my phone but itโ€™s asking me to sign up again and it seems it will be another server. I do not want two accounts?
@MimiJ9 Sorry, can't help you. I don't do tech support.
@atomicpoet o suppose Iโ€™ll get it eventually
@atomicpoet @yeyodebote Why does editing no longer look like something from the future in microblogging?
