Worth observing just how close the National Trust AGM vote was - some of the Restore Trust candidates had some 40,000 votes to the National Trust nomineesā€™ c.70,000

Next year, we can expect worse.

@gem_abbott we're going to join the #nationaltrust. We haven't previously because of concerns about hunting, but I think its time to raise issues like these from the inside. Better us than the Tufton St groups

@gem_abbott Itā€™s better than last year when two Restore candidates were actually elected. I hope this means that the NTs silent and reasonable majority has been awoken whilst there is a limit to Tufton Street support. However it depends on that majority voting in every election - I know I will going forward!

@gem_abbott That is a bit depressing. And I forgot to vote.

I do dislike the NT's voting system tho, as FPTP it is a disaster waiting to happen, not to mention rather undemocratic ā€“ tho only sane option is to vote for the Board recommendations

The propagation of these culture war themes in the right wing media is so pernicious.
My wife (doesnā€™t do Social media) came off the phone to her parents a couple of weeks ago totally bemused at them bringing up a whole diatribe against the NT that was all the Restore Trust agenda Theyā€™re not members AFAIK & never visit NT properties but take Spectator & Telegraph.
