šŸ“£ Great news from the National Trust AGM - the results are in and Restore Trust have:

āŒ failed in their two resolutions to appoint an ā€˜ombudsman’ and prevent the Chairman’s discretionary proxy vote

āŒ failed to have their candidates appointed in the Council Elections

You can read the report here - but it looks as if all of the National Trust Nomination Committee’s recommended candidates *and* the Trustees’ recommended positions on the members’ resolutions have carried

National Trust

If you are wondering why it’s such good news that the National Trust members have defeated the Restore Trust, stokers of the culture war with links to shady Tufton Street, read this by Brian Cathcart for Byline Times šŸ‘‡

The Right-Wing Bid to Capture the National Trust Exposed

With days to go before the National Trust’s members choose its new council, the ā€˜Restore Trust’ group is campaigning in a manner that scarcely inspires trust. Brian Cathcart reports

Byline Times

Worth observing just how close the National Trust AGM vote was - some of the Restore Trust candidates had some 40,000 votes to the National Trust nominees’ c.70,000

Next year, we can expect worse.

Time to organise, National Trust members ✊

@gem_abbott we're going to join the #nationaltrust. We haven't previously because of concerns about hunting, but I think its time to raise issues like these from the inside. Better us than the Tufton St groups
@PatLewis love to see your avatar - I’m a big supporter of Article 39 specifically and children’s rights more generally ā¤ļø
@gem_abbott thank you. Saw in your bio that you were with The #GoodLawProject, greatly approve of their work
@PatLewis thank you. I’m very proud to have worked there ā¤ļø
@gem_abbott That;s brilliant news. Disappointed though about the A303 resolution failing as I'm not sure that the NT have made the right decision here. But all in all very good news.
@gem_abbott I didn't realise the results were published. Big relief anyway, for one year.
@gem_abbott I'm pretty sure they won't be around next year. Liz Truss has scuppered all this stuf.... hopefully.
@Activ8 I wouldn’t bet on that, I’m afraid
@gem_abbott I'm maybe more hopeful than dead sure!
@gem_abbott totally agree. Scary how many votes Restore Trust candidates got. We need to organise.
@gem_abbott Thank you for posting this. I had no idea about the 55 Tufton links, either. Time to re-join and get that windshield sticker again, I think! :)
@gem_abbott eek. Thanks for sharing, I hadn't caught up
@gem_abbott It’s better than last year when two Restore candidates were actually elected. I hope this means that the NTs silent and reasonable majority has been awoken whilst there is a limit to Tufton Street support. However it depends on that majority voting in every election - I know I will going forward!
@gem_abbott I must confess that I don't even read the voting papers when they come in every year!
@gem_abbott I'm very much a spectator here: the highlighted names are the "Restore Trust" ones, yes? If so am v glad to see they didn't succeed.
@AliceMerray yes that’s it! And me too
@gem_abbott @AliceMerray what a shame such a small proportion of the NT's membership voted; and it was so easy tote online.
In so many contexts it's always the bad guys who are better organised. When will we learn?
@dfarb @gem_abbott I would def have voted but am not a member. Hence my self - description of spectator.
@gem_abbott so relieved! We're new members and made a point of voting. I was waiting for news, but have no idea if the #NationalTrust is good on member comms.
@gem_abbott that’s shot up from last year. They quite clearly dominated the agenda this year too. Worrying times.
@gem_abbott Did the resolution against the quick vote (recommended candidates) system get defeated? If not next year may be different.

@gem_abbott That is a bit depressing. And I forgot to vote.

I do dislike the NT's voting system tho, as FPTP it is a disaster waiting to happen, not to mention rather undemocratic – tho only sane option is to vote for the Board recommendations

@gem_abbott I can't find any news from the AGM so this is SUCH a relief!
@MDC I suddenly realised I hadn’t seen any news and frantically searched - what a relief!
@gem_abbott those shady characters from tufton street always make me think of squirrels
@gem_abbott huge result!! What a relief
@gem_abbott
The propagation of these culture war themes in the right wing media is so pernicious.
My wife (doesn’t do Social media) came off the phone to her parents a couple of weeks ago totally bemused at them bringing up a whole diatribe against the NT that was all the Restore Trust agenda They’re not members AFAIK & never visit NT properties but take Spectator & Telegraph.
@huge_action pernicious is the perfect word - it really is
@gem_abbott Important to note the connection to climate denialism
@gem_abbott fabulous news, I hadn't heard the results , let's hope that's the end of this bunch.

@gem_abbott

Thanks for flagging this up. Given the size and wealth of the National Trust, it's not surprising the moochers at Tufton Street want to get their grubby mits on it.

@gem_abbott A beautiful double whammy for the Tufty club, with the IEA's Trussonomics being dumped too. The Laffer curve is no laughing matter.
