It’s really sad for people who lost their trusted online home in #Twitter with the Musk takeover. He really shows who he is now by firing half the staff blindly, he simply doesn’t care about the human aspect.

Try to see it positive since now you have discovered a place that’s as much as fun and probably even more! We may not have the numbers but we make up for that by kindness and interaction with each other🥰♥️

A social network is not defined by its numbers but by its community

@stux It's going to be a class action employment lawsuit to remember, at least.
@shield_asset @stux it looks like they’ve already caved and filed a WARN notice making the layoffs effective Jan 3rd, so at least they get what they are owed (but will of course be keeping an ear to the ground in case he reneges on it).
@sarmitage @stux Seems like that just created tons of work for the company legal team and HR.
@stux True! One thing to add with this: A 'smaller' Twitter account or a new account will have a higher chance of having meaningful conversations here than #Twitter. So it won't be bad at all. 🙂
@stux agreed. And Mastodon has been a much nicer and more welcoming experience for me. 😊
@stux even the numbers can be questioned. After all, didn’t Musk say he didn’t want to buy Twitter because most of the numbers were bots? Come here for real.
@KarenMonroy @stux and then he goes out of his way to encourage bots
@stux he’s also showing that he’s not as good at business as he’s led people to believe. He clearly had no real business plan coming in, and is making panic moves, now.
@Lsquare28 @stux Seems there's a lot of "not as good at business as he claims he is" going around lately... 🙄
@stux so true I am also step by step converting colleagues and friends.
And have to say after a week here struggle go to back (for work accounts etc) because despite heavy filter, block, and muting one cannot escape the toxicity... It's much calmer here.
@stux joined a couple of days ago, it’s a lot to learn and get used to but the lack of trolls is a pleasant change, just need to figure out who to follow etc now as it’s a little confusing for a newbie.
@stux I have to agree with you. I’m still on Twitter waiting to see what will ultimately happens. In the meantime I found this platform and I’m happy I did. I’m still very new here and learning the site but so far so good!
@jdomestic @stux
Same thing here.
I’m for the most part just meh about the Twitter takeover, though I will admit I’m curious about what will happen to it. But Elon aside, I already was planning on stepping away from the bird app, mainly to not spend as much time on it as I used to. And after a very personally stressful event occurring on that platform, I’m finally removing myself from the platform for a while to calm down.

@stux I'm only here because I read r/Twitter on #Reddit and it seems that every account can get banned at any time without reason or a way to get it back. Even accounts over a decade old.

This is due to some algorithms there and a very small staff handling the appeals.

As #ElonMusk is a very big fan of AI and automation this will probably get much worse.

I don't care if I have to ignore Volkswagen or vitamin pill ads.

@stux Let’s get more #Cartoonists on here (coz 0 people are talking about this)!!
@MinisterOfSnark @stux
Animator here, and I’ve already made an account a while back, when I was looking for alternate tech to use besides the main big ones. I’m still on Twitter, but I won’t be active as much. (And this isn’t even related to the new leadership, it’s just Twitter is still a toxic place. I am however, interested in what that platform will become. Really, though, regardless of recent events, I just wanna have other means of sharing my art, videos, etc.
@stux kindness in the community is all I'm looking for really so I'm glad I've discovered this 😊

@stux Agreed, and I am pleasantly excited and surprised at the communication and community in general. Looks like some fun and meaningful conversations can be had here.

Also; hello everyone  !

@stux Couldn’t agree more!
@stux wait until #musk brings over #tesla team to rank it even more. He is the most overrated useless member of society #twitter will fail #shortTSLA

@stux Twitter became toxic years before Musk 🤷🏻‍♀️

It's about behaviour of users - hate speech, doxxing, cyberbully that has been reported again and again and ignored by Twitter moderators.

These days Twitter looks like poorer brother of Facebook.

@stux oh, apparently the firings are to shove their paychecks into paying for the debts he racked up buying twitter.
and apparently he's going to keep paying those paychecks for 3 months???
which in turn is to prevent them from being able to sue him???
but like, all in all, I'm not sure what he thinks he's gonna achieve here.

@stux
I had signed on to Mastodon way back when Musk first announced he was buying Twitter.

When it looked like he was going to waffle, I stuck around Twitter because so many of the creators I enjoy were still on it.

Now, I have been permanently suspended over a joke.

I was arguing in favor of gun control, saying all semi-automatic firearms should be banned. Of course, the gun nuts dog-piled me.

@stux my interactions on twitter were at least 25% likely to involve some form of trolling or hatred. I haven't had ANY interactions of that nature on Mastodon! Of course I'm sure I'll eventually run into a problematic individual but the huge reduction in hateful content has done wonders for me so far.
@notthatdelta @stux Same here. Cheers, fellow Denverite. 🍻
@stux but tell me why my account is restricted?
@stux this is a great message and in the end, that's what Twitter has become: a place of micro communities for those of us who had been there long enough to see it transform into what it is now. I really hope Mastodon can become a great platform to interact and meet people from all over the world.
@stux leaving Twitter was like escaping an abusive relationship. Mastodon is helping so many of us finally heal, thank you.
@stux so far, it’s been a very nice experience, but it seems hard to convince others who haven’t moved…
@Htaggert @stux I think it’s getting easier to convince people with each day as more of us report back that “you really need to try this out.”
@legallaurak @stux true. Some fold made an account but then haven’t used it. So of course- it’s foreign to them. I mean- I work for about 30 hospitals each one has “customized” their medical records- so I guess I’m just used to peering around the inter webs wondering what happens when I push a button!
@Htaggert @stux it’s certainly not an instant fall in love experience. I think a lot of us have gotten so used to the Twitter model as it is today (well as it was a week ago…🙄) that we forget there might be other options. I hesitated for almost a week even though people were saying they were on mastodon now, because people were also saying it was too confusing.
@legallaurak @stux I think my usual day to day dive into weird systems is helping me- so far I just feel I’m missing the weekly group chats we had on Twitter- #RunChat etc
@stux Ur so spot on. I actually deleted the app from my phone this morning cause I feel so much more at ease here. So thanks! Still searching for the donation button tho...
@stux these discussions remind me of the early days of the Well. What’s missing from twitter is true account verification. I don’t mean the check marks. You can’t have free speech with anonymous posts. Now that #medtwitter has a presence in Mastadon, we just need are a few physicists, poets & #deadheads and it will feel like the 90s. #vote #vote #vote
@stux I especially like that last line.
@stux I just started my journey into Mastodon today. I thought it was cool that when it came to account verification, I could check the email I was sent by clicking the “Open Email App” button and being sent straight to my email app from Mastodon then back!
@stux Grateful for a safe space.
@stux exactly. A few days on here, and you won't even miss it.
@stux sounds about right.
@stux migrated here from twitter 👋
@stux I will be very happy when I’m well acquainted as to how to best use this platform and interact with other people here, but very happy to have made the move.
@stux thank you for the warm welcome and generous use of your server.
@stux I left Twitter mainly to escape all of the negativity that seems to permeate the entire platform. But the last straw was when he flat out lied to his employees about the layoffs. Working with less people doesn’t usually mean a better service. It usually leaves employees trying to do multiple jobs in an ever increasing toxic environment. #TwitterMigration
@stux The one that surprised me was the idea he may have ditched people based on how much code they wrote, and ditched the ones the wrote the least. Hence, writing a small amount of code is "hard", and almost always is in areas that are hard to do. He has no clue does he. One job I did was code 10x most people on the team, and deleted old code twice what I created, so net very negative. I'd never survive Musk.
@revk @stux
I remember a time when concise elegant coding was admired. Had to know your stuff to work with limited memory space.
@stux Casey Newton’s piece in The Platformer made clear that if there is one constant to Musk through this entire takeover, it would be cruelty. I see that as the governing direction of Twitter going forward. Really hate that I’ll be dependent on Musk for internet soon.
@stux I'm still 'finding my feet' but this feels like a place I will enjoy once I've figured it out a bit more.
@stux well its more complicated than that, but I can understand why people feel the need to leave. Any business needs to be strict with their budget.
@stux supposedly 250 people in Ireland lost their jobs, locked out of their work accounts. Similarly nearly 3 years ago hundreds of people (mostly women) lost their jobs with Debenhams, locked out of their workplace. #DebenhamsworkersIreland They are only getting to the Work Place Commission (WRC) now, paving the way for the #Twitterlayoffs #solidaritywiththeworkers
@stux liked this one: community. No man should control a network of people.

@stux Hell yeah!

And I dunno if people saw this as well, but Elon Musk fired the entire human rights team at twitter
