My proposal for news organizations (and other institutions) to stand up their own mastodon instances on their domains is still getting passed around, so here's a repost.

The proposal is in 2 parts:

1. s13e17: A Proposal for News Organization Mastodon Servers and More, at https://newsletter.danhon.com/archive/4230/

2. s13e18: Mastodon, or What Happens When Your Software Has Opinions And Now You Have Choices, at https://newsletter.danhon.com/archive/s13e18-mastodon-or-what-happens-when-your/

@danhon another thing I'd add is that there are *already* news accounts on Mastodon, mirrored from Twitter or RSS feeds—e. g. I follow @torontostar and @aljazeera.

@danhon

I just had a discussion yesterday wondering why this wasn't happening. Obviously, it was. Very exciting.

@danhon

Oh and sent it to local news editor as well

@danhon I hope they take your advice!
@danhon I think there is a bit more work to do to ensure traceability of a toot that I see back to the certificate of the server it came from but that is geeky backup to a model that will work in practice already

@danhon oh yes, I was looking for this! I've been vaguely thinking of getting Snipette (the magazine I edit) formally on the Fediverse for a while (rather than just @snipette which is unfortunately mostly crossposting).

Actually what got me stuck is I was trying to envision the publication itself as an actor on the fediverse (something like write.as) rather than, say, a Mastodon instance which is run by the publication and has it authors posting on there

@danhon here's a couple of blog posts I wrote on the topic. Unfortunately I never got back to thinking about it properly, but here it is (incidentally also in two parts):

1. Publications for the Fediverse? at https://badrihippo.writeas.com/publications-for-the-fediverse

2. Who owns the post? at https://badrihippo.writeas.com/who-owns-the-post

This would of course take a lot more investment than linking a Mastodon instance 😅

@danhon just remembered the first of those has comments on it, which you can see if you open the post within Mastodon

@danhon Yes! This!

News organizations wouldn’t rely on personal Gmail accounts or gmail.com email addresses. They manage their own email host with their own washingtonpost.com domain. The same approach should extend to social media and the #fediverse supports this!

@danhon I’ve also been pushing for this idea among political organizations. democrats.org and gop.com managing their own social media accounts.
@KevinMarks It is kind of disappointing/predictable how slowly e.g. unions have been to at least start an experiment here.
@danhon there is a fair bit of sysadmin wrangling to set up a decent sized instance still
@danhon this makes so much sense!
@danhon This is an outstanding proposal. These instances would be trusted *by design*, something we desperately need.
@danhon not the journalist’s employers, associations should be setting them up

@danhon I suggested we either set up a instance for verified journalists or convince news outlets to set up their own. I have no way of proving to Mastodon that I'm the same person who has a "verified" checkmark on Twitter.
