What is better than a list? A list of lists!

For academic Mastodon, we now have a central place to gather all lists that folks have created:

With thanks to @konrad for the idea, I have created a Google Form to help build up a list of #religion #scholars #religionscholars #Religidons on Mastodon. Consider adding yourself ot the list to help new folks find other religion scholars on the network. Google form: https://forms.gle/AqY7JYTi22VvFN7k7 #Religidons spreadsheet: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1uBwBthFWMCTKxMEn6liNosDX8bOEmoNnFZnWD_xu_7E/edit?usp=sharing I reserve the right to curate the list gently, remove spam, etc. contact me if you see something problematic on the list.

@hendrikerz This is really great! Can you advise on how I can connect to the mastodon groups (like "@ecologies")? Seemed easy at first glance but the link on the github page doesn't work for me and I get stuck in a mastodon auth loop...
@kidwellj Enter the group name into the search field on mastodon (including its domain!), then you should get to the profile where you basically just have to follow the group to see the updates!
I've just noticed that one can simply follow a group now. Suspect this was a part of recent masto updates. This is a game changer IMHO so that you can join an instance emphasise community there and also follow peeps across servers along special interest lines. But also suspect there will be increasing needs to mod and monitor memberships lest groups get inadvertently infiltrated...
@kidwellj @hendrikerz @ecologies I just had the same issue.
Try clicking the link in your toot, then it worked in the app for me
Hi @hendrikerz a heads up that @mergerson has created a list for journalism scholars also!
Hey @pmphillips this might be interesting for you 🙂 Dave
@hendrikerz Fantastic! Even better would be to have them on a free software and soon-federatable forge like https://codeberg.org/ :)

@hendrikerz @perspektivbrocken @jwyg @brenton_peterson @JauneBaguette @thhaase hi Hendrik in your list of lists could you please add a link to the #histodons list linked to below for your list of lists? We aren’t using GitHub or the web app but have a nice and still growing list of over 250 historians with nice extra details: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1zmuH0ffMpCNOEjsReMk5iiqGwiUvhO2TtrM8QKu98SE/htmlview#gid=844879137

@hendrikerz @perspektivbrocken @jwyg @brenton_peterson @JauneBaguette @thhaase I've got to say I prefer my experience a bit more free-range / random but I imagine some will find the lists very useful.
@hendrikerz @perspektivbrocken @jwyg @brenton_peterson @JauneBaguette @thhaase may I ask if you have a list of lists which don’t include themselves? I’ve been looking for one. #russell
@hendrikerz Would a curated server list be helpful for the same people? https://fediscience.org/server-list.html

@hendrikerz I hope these lists are opt-in. Otherwise some people are going to be cross. This kind of thing is not really done on this server. If it is all opt-in, all good.

Just a FYI.

@marcjones I understand that. I am not responsible for the lists themselves, but before confirming any PR, I always vet the curators and the lists themselves.

Hi there! We’ve compiled a directory of Literary Studies scholars on Mastodon. Please add us to your list of lists.

@hendrikerz @perspektivbrocken @jwyg @brenton_peterson @JauneBaguette @thhaase A question for all of you. I’d like to set up an account for an academic organization/entity. What do you think the best instances would be for that account? It is focused on the nexus of technology and society. Very STS like, + law, policy.

@hendrikerz @perspektivbrocken @jwyg @brenton_peterson @JauneBaguette @thhaase

By maintaining a list of German political entities present in the Fediverse (and thus on Mastodon) I have learnt:

List do not scale well.

Thus I propose we build a #KnowledgeGraph together, like #Wikidata but specifically for the #Fediverse.

More details on that idea:

https://social.tchncs.de/@cark/109292451520489521

CarK (@[email protected])

So, why not enable the #Fediverse community to built and curate their own #KnowledgeGraph? It could start with manually gathered information like https://codeberg.org/open/fedipolitik/ #fedipolitk but maybe later public information could be added automatically. This would facilitate the creation of topical account lists and thus improve the user experience both of old and new #fediverse inhabitants. It also would help to spread the knowledge about such great technologies like #wikidata and #sparql. 3/3

Mastodon
@cark @perspektivbrocken @jwyg @brenton_peterson @JauneBaguette @thhaase why would you wanna use SparQL for a database of relatively simple text content? That sounds like way too much tech for a simple task. Also, I would be wary of the term knowledge graph, I have tons of experience and that never worked out well for anyone involved.

@hendrikerz

> Why SPARQL (and thus RDF)

→ Because it offers the flexibility that might be needed. The alternative would be SQL but this would require to predefine a table schema a priori. With RDF the knowledge could grow organically (like #wikidata)

> I have tons of experience and that never worked out well for anyone involved.

→ I do not understand this. On what topic is your experience and what did never work out well?

@hendrikerz @cark @perspektivbrocken @jwyg @brenton_peterson @JauneBaguette @thhaase

The task can organically get more complex, as the lists grow, and people suddenly defy simple categorizations, etc.

I also have tons of experience with the term knowledge graph, and it had really worked out well for many of the projects I worked on ;)

@hendrikerz @perspektivbrocken @jwyg @brenton_peterson @JauneBaguette @thhaase This is so helpful! What happens if we re-add the same list again a bit later, once it has grown more? Does it only add the new entries?

Imagine being the curator of a "List of buildings and structures in Puerto Rico".

I recognize it's actually a list of notable buildings, but it made me laugh to think of someone documenting every new home and corner market built.
