new peeps're here!!!

that's coolsies

just remember

this isn't twitter

i haven't really felt up to doing one of my in-depth posts welcoming peeps to the fediverse and providing tips like i have during previous migrations

but if i had to give one tidbit of advice, it'd be that yeah

that this isn't twitter and you shouldn't treat it that way!

welcome to what will probably be your new online home 😁

normally i'd just dig up and boost one of my old posts from a previous migration

but they're on my old account on cybre.space so yeah lmao

okay so like

on twitter you're supposed to be all sassy and quippy and shit to please the algorithm gods and make numbers go up right

on here you can just be honest and genuine and yourself and it's awesome

tl;dr

you must abandon the twitter mindset

the most important thing i think you can do is just open yourself up to learning

take some time to sit back and see how things are done here

because a lot is done very differently and much of that is intentional

take some time to really digest all the new user tips and such

this place isn't trying to replace twitter

it's trying to not be a dumpster fire like twitter and it succeeds greatly at least in comparison to corporate social media

i didn't think i'd have to mention this but i suppose some peeps might not know so i guess it's worth it just in case

there's NO ALGORITHM here

timelines are chronological

and there's NO ADS here

mastodon instances are generally the one place i can visit with ublock origin on and not have anything blocked

so yeah lol

instances are generally run by volunteers and supported through donations

but don't donate to the official mastodon project lol

gargron isn't by any means hanging by a thread financially like lotsa peeps on here, and that's to say nothing about the bullshit he does

smaller instance admins are the real ones hurting here

as well as peeps in the #MutualAid hashtag

if you find yourself inclined towards giving back to the fediverse at some point, start there instead

i will not be going into detail about "the bullshit gargron does"

i don't have the energy lmao

it's a draining as fuck topic

just stick around for a bit and you'll see what i mean eventually

okay more new user tips

content warnings are extremely important here

they're ingrained in our culture

they're not censorship, but rather consent

they allow someone to decide if they wanna engage with your post, and if so on what terms

they're a courtesy, and you have legiterally no reason to not use them as much as possible

they're one of the best features mastodon has

think of it like a subject line or a title for your post

you're MORE LIKELY to get "engagement" if you use them right

i'm borrowing this from my instance's "about" page, but check what yours says too!

⚫ sex and nudity

⚫ drugs, drug use

⚫ personal health, medical issues, hospitals

⚫ depression, anxiety, mental health issues, suicidal thoughts

⚫ food, weight loss, weight gain

⚫ death, funerals

⚫ violence of any kind

someone asked me to do a video about cw's on here so i did lol

What Are Content Warnings On Mastodon? Why Should You Use Them?

YouTube

hey new peeps from twitter who're makin a big fuss about content warnings

y'know how the saying goes

"when in rome, disregard local customs and force the romans to do as you do"

...right?

@vantablack Some of us survived several rounds of warning drama from fandom; that's how the Archive of Our Own ended up with three very specific warnings plus "choose not to warn", and nobody was really thrilled with that compromise.

Being told "you must warn us before talking about things we don't like, but no, there's no list" feels like being called too dangerous to talk to.

@vantablack Nice video 👍
@matt @vantablack Would be even better to put such a video on federated platform too: #peertube.
@vantablack bookmarking this list for later reference, thank you so much
@vantablack Ty! I made a note and will start doing this.
@vantablack I no-kidding thought this was a poll at first and was all “oof”
@vantablack Thank you so much for this :)
@vantablack thank you for this! Some are obvious, but I hadn’t thought of CWing my own medical issues (though I’ve only mentioned them once). I will do better!
@vantablack as an autistic person it never even occurred to me that eye contact stuff can be something to put behind a content warning!

@vantablack This list is very similar to the restricted and high risk classified merchant processing categories that Visa, MasterCard, American Express and Discover have had for decades.

They have a few more categories like travel (flights, cruises and such are all high risk), lodging, events and such too.

@vantablack May I ask why selfies, eye contact? And I'd also would like to know if there's a place for activism when politics is cw'd. For example: an artwork with a queer politics slogan? Discussion of theoretical politics? Sorry but this is all new to me, and I'm trying to get a feel for it.

@vantablack I mean, why not just reduce that to "everything" and rename it from CW to just "Subject Line"

Actually given the software package I'm running I'm tempted to do that.

@vantablack
child abuse, domestic violence, human trafficking (including sex trafficking, labour trafficking, and others)
@vantablack I'm genuinely curious about "selfies, eye contact" because it's the only thing I was for sure not taking into account until now. What's the rationale behind this need?
@vantablack pregnancy is one content note, that is kind of already on your list, but deserves explicit mentioning.
@vantablack I'm surprised swearing isn't on the list. It's not something I personally care about, but there are presumably plenty who do. Also if eye contact is one, should people put content warnings on their avatars?
@joolschadwick @vantablack it's physically impossible to do unfortunately, because cws don't affect profile pics
@vantablack thank you, that’s helpful. Who would have thought of selfies (I never post any, but anyway…) ?
@LaMarieJeanne selfies can be stressful for certain autistic peeps who have trouble with eye contact
inside of a content warning!
  @vantablack
@vantablack @esdin I appreciate the example. So, basically, it’s good form to cover *any* toot?
@vantablack
For new users (like me), Content Warnings are applied here on things that might be contentious, like politics, and can be applied to your toot by pressing the "CW" button under where you write your post.
@WendyMsGator @vantablack on iPhone it’s a shield icon with an exclamation mark or so I assume
@vantablack keep the tips coming 😀
@vantablack Is it possible to put a content warning on someone else's post before I share it?
@Treasa_Anseo you can do that by linking to the post then adding the cw manually, saying something like "boost with cw" 😁

@vantablack @Treasa_Anseo

Thank you - This is the tip I’ve been looking for.

mastodon.ie
@vantablack lots and lots and lots and lots and lots of rules are the best! More, please!
@vantablack CW on images are a feature that birdsite stole from fedi IIRC, they didn't have the guts to allow CWs on everything but they should have
@vantablack Help me. Example of the correct use of content warning?

@JeffLieber

Just type in a brief description of the topic as the warning, and then write your post normally. Eg if you're posting a photo of your dinner, warn for "food", if you're ranting about politics, warn for "politics", if you're posting your Wordle score, warn for "Wordle", if you're talking about the latest episode of... idk, Star Trek, warn for "ST Discovery season 5 spoilers".

@vantablack

@zeborah @vantablack Very much appreciate this.Thank you.
@zeborah One other newbie question: when I respond to you...can ANYONE see this response or do people have to come looking for responses? Shorter: how does one do a Q and A here?
@JeffLieber When you post a reply (or any post) it will default to the same visibility as the original post. But you can change it if you want. In the web app, that's in the list of icons at the bottom of the post - see screenshot of the full list of options.
@vantablack re: Content Warnings. I have noticed and I agree and like your framing as it being like a headline - and so I kinda wish we might evolve away from using a negative name for it, Warning, and replace with something neutral or appealing even. I appreciate your tips that reach a good level of specificity. 😊
@RMiddleton @vantablack probably it should be called "Content Summary" or "tl;dr". although that depends on your admins if they want to fork and change it
@uncomfyhalomacro @vantablack Subject Matter Label was one that came to me, nice and vague and yet clear. They’ll probably stick with CW since it’s understood, but I’ve been here one week, I know nothing!
@uncomfyhalomacro @RMiddleton @vantablack
'Content Note' is the alternative I've seen most often.

@RMiddleton @vantablack

Agreed. "Content notice" :)

@vantablack There's filters for that. You add the person's entire name, mark the content cw yourself (manual). If all did a content warning, that's a lot of clicking to see, or nothing's seen at all just the cw sign. I'd rather people be free to toot, leave it to me to use filters to decide what is not acceptable. I know ppl here who filtered out tfg and Eloneus, so they don't have to read a thing. I don't mind reading, so far, a variety of topics. I've also blocked ppl I disagree with from 🐦.
@bellesapepper_37 @vantablack filters only work if the phrase or word is included in the post
So someone posting about politics probably won't put the word "politics" in their post, unless they're being considerate and use a CW
@raphaelmorgan @vantablack Not true. It's like Google mail features and old yahoo groups. You should be able to filter out the name of a newspaper. I have several at Gmail & yahoo too.
@bellesapepper_37 I don't think you actually read my post lol
Either that or you don't see what people are posting
@vantablack Thanks. Examples? Do we need to clearly label parody, for example?

@taoish @vantablack

It can be helpful, for autistic users; there are many on here who often do (myself included).
