Introducing MNT Pocket Reform

Pocket Reform is a 7 inch mini laptop from MNT Research. We condensed the best features of MNT Reform into a smaller, lighter, and more affordable device while adding some new exciting details.

@mntmn WAIT WHAT DO YOU MEAN FPGA OPTION
@xerz @mntmn I am curious what the kintex support status is in the open FPGA flow… (just in case, for reference: https://mastodon.social/@mntmn/106925262107356462 )
@mntmn This looks like it does everything right that the Gemini PDA + PinePhone (keyboard) did wrong. So glad to see this.
@brad what did they do wrong?
@txt_file The keyboard is laid out poorly, and is also not wired properly. Caps lock can get activated by pressing alt-tab. Normally activated by fn-tab. So adjacent keys activate each other's signals. Also they promised GNU/Linux support but the support was very poor and relied on leaving Android installed and using libhybris to reuse the blobs for Android. Just an overall horrible experience that made me go back to a regular phone and put the Gemini PDA in my closet, unused entirely because it's so frustrating and sad. Also you need some sketchy tool for messing with the OSes, and once you get the dual boot Android/Debian setup going you can longer get Android OTA updates, you need to use that sketchy tool to do anything.
@brad can’t decipher if your statement is more about Gemini or pinephone
@txt_file 100% Gemini PDA, however they are very similar keyboards design-wise, both copying the old Psion devices. I'm not aware of stuff like the caps lock issue happening on the Pine version, but I still think it's pretty flawed.
@mntmn Yay! I'm looking forward to getting to know this little friend.
@mntmn Let me know when you start selling prototypes. Maybe this time I'll manage to be the first to run Gentoo on one of these things :D

@vimja @mntmn

Yeah, you're doing gentoo and I'm doing void (and eventually hopefully openbsd) and we'll show up at Revision next year and ...

we really need a demo for it

(Since, you know, I'm obviously preordering one despite my not NEEDING one, and having these things that I don't have time for... or well I have to fix that and...)

@mntmn

Dammit I do NOT need another of these things that I will wish to use and not have enough time to mess with

When are preorders

Because we both know I'm preordering anyway

@mntmn i love the color, btw why is the screen part so thicc? What needs to fit there?
@mntmn or this is just on renders?
@lina @mntmn I believe that’s actually where the SoM/main board are, if it’s like the earlier prototypes
@mntmn have you evaluated touchscreen options? I don't want to miss my touchscreens. Especially if they are so close to the keyboard!
@lbehm
Touchscreen Option would be great indeed
@mntmn
@mntmn ooooh 😍 … want!
@mntmn " International layouts " Yes !!
@mntmn for me ~10 inch is the sweet spot. Smaller means keyboard is to small for 10 finger typing for me.
@mntmn This does not seems conductive to touch typing :-/
@mntmn @claudiom Maybe this will finally replace your EeePC?
@mntmn Looks like the future pine64, quartz64 format compatible, RISC-V based module will be usable with it :).
@mntmn Looks like a fun device to run Genode’s (@genode) Sculpt OS on. FPGA would be icing on the cake ;)
@mntmn I am looking for a new ultra portable to replace my sony vaio P11.
Unfortunately all vendors out there hacksaw the keyboard into a variant not suitable for typing with 10 Fingers. This is probably to match the 16:9 screen ratio we are all used to. However it should be the other way around.
