RSS fans!

You can follow any Mastodon account via RSS by just adding ".rss" to the end of the account's public profile URL.

To find a user's public profile URL, click on their profile image within Mastodon.

For example, if you click on FediTips' profile image you get this page in a new tab:

https://mstdn.social/@feditips

So, to follow FediTips through RSS, use this address:

https://mstdn.social/@feditips.rss

This will only show that account's public posts. Other posts will not be visible on the RSS feed.

Mastodon 🐘
@feditips It’s a shame that the RSS feed doesn’t contain all posts. I consider boosted posts to be part of the content I publish on Mastodon.
@rauschma @feditips It would be great to have two feeds: one for just your toots and the other including boosts
@feditips @a1ba btw, does pleroma have this thing? i wasn't able to find a link to rss feed anywhere on a page.
@feditips Does it work for tags

@abid

Yes!

If you add .rss onto the end of a Mastodon tag URL, you will get a feed of public posts with that tag visible from that instance.

For example:

https://mstdn.social/tags/florespondence.rss

...will give you an RSS feed of public posts with the tag #florespondence visible from mstdn.social.

@feditips Great i never tried that, now i see it works on #Pleroma too
@feditips Is it also possible - in reverse - to follow an RSS feed from Mastodon? That would be a great feature, wouldn't it?

@irene

No, not from Mastodon, BUT...

...you could try Friendica instead?

Friendica is compatible with Mastodon and the rest of the Fediverse. It also lets you follow RSS feeds as if they are people to follow, and new items from the feed appear in the timeline alongside posts from the Fediverse. I was planning to post about it tomorrow.

Frienica's site is at https://friendi.ca, some good general servers include https://libranet.de and https://squeet.me

@feditips Thank you for the detailed answer! - But I don't want to change the instance just because of that.... Maybe Mastodon can do it sometime in the future, who knows.
@feditips
Sweet! Now to figure out if I use this at home e or at work. :p
@feditips Is it possible to get an RSS feed of all the posts by a particular user tagged WITH a particular hashtag?
@kerim @feditips Did you ever figure out an answer to this?

@bryan @kerim

Yes, the answer is yes!

Go to a user's profile URL, then add /tagged/ on the end and then a hashtag without the #. This will show you their posts with that tag, for example:

https://social.growyourown.services/@fedifollows/tagged/art

Now just add .rss to the end of that, so for example:

https://social.growyourown.services/@fedifollows/tagged/art.rss

@feditips @kerim thank you, that’s incredible!
@feditips RSS...I feel young again.
@feditips RSS is a sadly underutilized technology that would make Twitter redundant if everyone knew about it.
@feditips Unfortunately my Feedbro RSS reader shows "No title", which is technically correct as toots have no title, but wished I could have an excerpt as title for the feed in order to have meaningful "headlines".

@feditips
Is there an RSS feed for an instance's local timeline?

Simply appending `.rss` to a working `instance/public/local` URL gets a "not available in the requested format" error. 🙁

@feditips I experimented with sending my own posts to #Feedly and it worked on the first try!

@feditips
It would be nice to be able to embed my Mastodon feed into a WordPress widget. But using the .rss URL, every entry has "Untitled" at the top as the link. Hm.

@feditips This is great!! I added the FeedBro extension to Firefox and I'm using it so I don't miss posts from some accounts that I want to see updates on quickly. And one of them is Fedi.Tips, BTW

Thank you for posting this!

@feditips Does it have support for images too? I've recently tested it and it's text only, I'd love to use RSS to follow artists. But still, very nice that mastodon supports this feature!
@feditips Yep this is where I learnt that we can rss Mastodon!
@feditips Is it possible to have the opposite ? I'd like to follow rss feeds through mastodon. I've found this https://mastofeed.org/ but since I don't know who they are I'm not using it for now
MastoFeed - Send your RSS Feeds to Mastodon

Automated and super easy tool to send the content from your RSS Feeds to any Mastodon instance. We do it all for you

MastoFeed.org

@nicolas

No, but you can do this in Friendica which is also part of the Fediverse.

You can follow RSS feeds in Friendica by just pasting the feed address into the search box and then clicking "Follow". Posts from the feed will start showing up in your Home timeline as if they were from a Fedi account, you can even share them.

By the way, Friendica accounts can follow Mastodon accounts, and Mastodon accounts can follow Friendica accounts.

is there any way to get the RSS feed to include boost as well?? because it seemed like the RSS feed at the moment only includes original toot of said account

like, some niche game usually just boost the toots of people playing and modding their game, as they only toot when there's something need to be announced, like new release etc

so my RSS reader is very empty most of the time as those boost were not in the feed, and I would like to get those boost inside the RSS feed as well

@yaya

No official way as far as I know? The RSS feed is just public posts from that account.

hmm .. that's a bummer

I hope Mastodon consider adding that feature, like maybe as an additional feed, or as an option to existing feed

I guess, for now, maybe someone out there would find workaround by fetching the boost using some sort of Mastodon API and render them as RSS externally

@feditips

this is fantastic. Now if the RSS has an XSL/XSLT so that it would appear as HTML. #humanpresentable
