A heads up to #India folks, this is not bird app, this is open source so each of the different instances you are in, there is someone else working for you to get this experience. I see lot of you asking for features and moderators, it’s pretty entitled I feel, they are funded by donation so pls try to donate to different instances you are in: for the number of folks we have brought in even if each of us pay 100 rupees, it will make huge difference . I will get information where we can donate

Most users got home at either mastodon.social or mstdn.social

So monetise contribution to these instances first.

Despite, mastodon.social is well funded but recent surge of new users must cost them resource.

It is advised new users to contribute to their respective home instance.

For donating to #Mastodon software development can be done later pace as instances requires financial support than development

@Deepsealioness

@noorul @Deepsealioness @milcom how do you contribute to mastodon.social instance infrastructure ?

I don't.

I am running an other instance which is quey.org.

Though, I am seeing a few making donation now.

Have you donated yet ?

@ravichso

@noorul done . Sponsor at $10 per month
@ravichso @noorul how did you pay?(mode of payment) @ravichso ? Is $10 the standard rate?
@CharismaticSal_ @noorul paid using credit card on patreon

Credit cards are fine.
Debit cards are pain.

Top private sector, ICICI, Axis bak, HDFC debit card, & SBI debit cards work fine for me.

Indian overseas, Indian bank, similar cards failing.

@ravichso @CharismaticSal_

@noorul @ravichso that means SBI debit card works. What about net banking?

Actually, I've not checked out myself.

As far I seen now, once you login into patreon.com, you are given credit/debit card & paypal.com option.

in order use SBI card, it need to be Visa/Mastercard international and need to enable international transaction.

Enable transaction with SBI debit card is possible with sending sms or via Internet banking.

---

With choosing Paypal option, you MAY show Internet banking to pay. (This is I am not checked yet)

@CharismaticSal_ @ravichso

@noorul @CharismaticSal_ debit cards should work . Not internet banking .

Like I mention before, not all debit card work for internationally.

#RBI restrict.

stupidly, there is even 2 system. When enabling International transaction for debit card, 1st they enable international ATM transactions, than need to request for international P.O.S (point of sale) again with some banks.

@ravichso @CharismaticSal_

@noorul @ravichso I think someone who has the access to international transaction can collect the fund and he or she pays the collected amount to the concerned website. But then, if the amount is high then tax thing comes.🤔

This concern to me earlier but not sure whom to turn to.

that someone need not be single person. May be a group of volunteers.

I don't know much of taxation. actually.

@CharismaticSal_ @ravichso

I've proposed something which can aid in long run.

I urge all to consider your own instance setup and get home there permanently. With your own policy, rules and moderation. We want many small communities for sustainability and many values. #India #Help @[email protected]

quey.org
@noorul @ravichso seems to be a bit complicated process. They need to come up with some easier process of payment in India.

Salma,

I been there,

so check my earlier post regarding donation:

noorul (@[email protected])

In my opinion, raise fund among you all, via NEFT, IMPS, UPI, mobile wallet. Then it is better to send to abroad. Reasons, a few challenges ahead. International donation website asks for international visa/master card. Not all our cards are enabled international payment 2), our banks setup a way for OTP for second verification when using credit/card. International uses differenent method for 2nd authenication. 3) patreon.com is donating is regular basic. Once setup, donation required at interval. For now, have some trust, collect donation domestically and send internationally. @[email protected]

@noorul this wud be great. Someone collect money from all the mastodon users in India and donate the raised fund to patreon.com. This seems feasible!

Indian government doesn't like outbound fund from India.

It "protects" internal resources ;)

@CharismaticSal_

@noorul @CharismaticSal_ @ravichso didn't see this, good you pointed it out ;)

By the way, I use primarily #SBI debit card linked with Paypal for a few International merchants.

Though need to enable international transaction which I enable via Internet banking.

here is screenshot of SBI page to enable International transaction

@CharismaticSal_

@noorul @ravichso @CharismaticSal_ From what I know, it's actually visa and mastercard . I have seen some places where one works, at some places, the other. At the end of the day, the bank is just the branding, the real service provider are these guys.

Bro, I've first hand information,

I have made numerous calling when I have send fund to servers.

Whatever, I have shared is my own experience which I had 1-2 years.

maybe things update.

---
you know something, when you may payment with cards online, you have enter OTP sent your mobile/Email,

this didn't work with Google developer payment.

It took me 1 week to make several calls to bank branch, HO, research online, made calls to Google, US.

Google US front desk can't solve the issue, I up raise to tech team to get explanation.

Google requires 2 authentication. 1 is CCV , 2nd is "3D verification".

with Indian banks, not all banks have 3D verifitcation but with OTP.

@shirishag75

@noorul I never had to do anything with google developer, have stayed away from them.

Oh, I use it for distributing #Android apps on Google play.

Other than that, I don't use Google product.

@shirishag75

@noorul I do use gmail, it's just I'm too lazy and don't really wanna set up my own mail server and stuff, too much work and too much work on the security front then as well. One of the reasons I didn't comment when you were talking about ipv4/6 stack.

haha,

Okay, setting up and running Mail suite is painful.

It is not meant for just 1 admin.

Greatly, I use #Yunohost to host mail Web apps, Email server with just click of button.

---
come on, bro.
Gmail ???

At least use Protonmail, or Riseup.net
___

@shirishag75

@noorul I know but have 2 decades of data, migration is a pain and for all that sucks, gmail makes it easy for me to find stuff.
@noorul on top of that so many government and other places have my gmail address. Even if I migrate away, I wouldn't know how to tell the same to people. It's work, and work for which I'll not be paid :(

I am not argumentative here but informative.

I've helped a few clients to migrate from Gmail.

steps,
______

*connect Gmail with Mail client like Gnome Evolution, Thunderbird,

* export downloaded mails for backup.

* move all the mails to folders on local storage which your Gmail become empty.

* set up redirection to new E-mails.

*set up new signature, reply-to to new emails.

* baby steps.

new mails arrive at your new inbox.

occassionally, tide your Gmail inbox.

@shirishag75

@noorul I have done that, or tried to do that. I guess it takes personal discipline more than anything else. Ironically, I have helped clients, friends set up mail servers etc. charged for it, even do some extra services for them but when it comes to self, dunno what happens.

haha,

it is same for me.
For others & client, every done perfectly.

For me, it is always mess. hehe

@shirishag75

@noorul I think part of it is we are always fiddling things for ourselves. Kinda breaking, figuring out stuff, for others it's much more simpler as we know what breaks and doesn't.

What do you do, may I ask ?

@shirishag75

@noorul nothing much. I work as 'consultant' . Have written some basics for e-zines such as https://itsfoss.com/author/shirish/ . Have conducted workshops and stuff alone, with friends etc.
Shirish - It's FOSS

Debian 10 Buster is nearing its release. Excited about the new major release? Here's a list of the new features in Debian 10.

lol,

let me tell, I don't even keep mails/contact on remote server.

I simple move newly received to local storage and copies on mobile client.

On Email server, with few newly arrived ones, using Riseup.net/

---

I am conservative of digital footprint and get ride of digital data frequently.

@shirishag75

@noorul well, you are better at it then me for sure. It will probably take me months to do that and even after that curation is going to take a while. It's only when sometimes I start deleting mails, I find friends who I haven't touched bases in years and then try to reconnect with them. Somehow, we seem to lose touch with people whom we knew :(

I don't want you to think I am do fancy with self hosting.

I have set up a few Android device with ssh, web server connect with DDNS.

just simple as this, Ipv4/6 is not working well.
